    Welcome to Back of Beyond. We are the only year-round residents living off of Camas Prairie in the North Warner Mountains, perched at 5,700' elevation. We have owned this beautiful piece of ground since 1996. It has ponderosa and aspen forests with a few white firs, junipers, and willows along the seasonal creek. Wild flowers are all over these mountains from Spring through September. The Squirrelville cabin was built in the early 1920s by a Lake County judge. The Whitetail cabin was built just after WW2 and is fully plumbed w/ hot water and a redwood deck, perfect for gazing at the stars. We are a member of Dark Skies Oregon, there is no light pollution, and on a clear night you can see the Milky Way. Privacy and solitude are on tap here: We are up against the Fremont National Forest, a massive 2.4 million acre forest offering multiple hiking and walking trails & winter sports. Speaking of winter sports, Warner Canyon Ski Area and Camas Sno Park are only a 5 minute drive away. The road running along our property is part of the 50+ miles of trail through the North Warner Mountain range, and into California. Love biking? It is also part of the new Timber Mountain Bike trail, as well as the Oregon Natural Desert Association alternative route to Lakeview. If you're looking to take home some of Oregon’s finest sunstones, South Central and Southeastern Oregon are the only areas in the world where the gem-graded sunstones with copper inclusions are found. Better yet, the Sunstone Public Collection Area is only an hour and 45 minutes away from camp. We are a mere 10 miles from the wide open spaces of the Great Basin, and a short drive to Hart Mt. Antelope Refuge. You get 2 ecosystems for the price of one! Hart Mountain Hot Springs and Petroglyph Lake are all an easy day trip away. Discover the largest concentration of Native petroglyphs in the entire state of Oregon, on and around Hart Mountain. Native Americans have lived in this area for over 10,000 years. Fishing enthusiasts will be happy to hear that native Red Band trout are in many water ways close by. Fly-fishing on Deep Creek and Vee Lake, or lure fishing for crappie and bass in the Warner Lakes, as well as Drew's and Cottonwood Reservoirs, Dog Lake, and Goose Lake. Seasonal wild flowers and bird watching are all very close at hand. Bird watch at the foot of Hart Mountain in the Warner Valley, where a series of lakes and wetlands form part of the Western Flyway for migrating birds. There are trails and blinds for bird watchers. Our water is pure Artesian spring water that we do not need to touch w/ chemicals.

    Squirrelville is a fully furnished, cozy, rustic cabin built by a Lake County judge in the 1920s, available to enjoy year round. Nestled in Ponderosa pines next to an aspen grove on 20 fenced acres, willows, sagebrush, a few junipers, and seasonal wildflowers add to the mix.  With one bedroom and open plan living and kitchen area, this cabin easily sleeps 2 adults, or 2 adults and one child. Bedroom: Queen size bed Living room: Queen size sleeper sofa Amenities:  Linens provided Wood stove (wood supplied) Oil heater Stereo sound system Kitchen: Fully equipped, with vintage refrigerator (very small freezer), "Home Comfort" wood cookstove with a 2 burner electric cooktop sitting on it for cooking, coffee maker, toaster oven, blender Large country kitchen sink with a 6 gallon container with spigot that is kept filled for use.5  gallon glass beverage container filled with pure artesian well water Outdoors: Picnic table Weber Charcoal BBQ Large hammock Outdoor Shower (seasonal, temperatures permitting)                                                    Carpeted outhouse with great view!     Whitetail Cabin is a soulful, rustic, 75 year old furnished cabin nestled in Ponderosa pines next to an aspen grove on 20 fenced acres. Willows, sagebrush, a few junipers, and seasonal wildflowers add to the mix. Privacy and solitude are on tap here. A seasonal creek runs through the property through Spring.  Built just after WW2 and accommodating up to 4 guests in its two bedrooms, this cozy retreat features:  *The Master bedroom holds a double bed, and the guest bedroom holds two single beds.  *Large redwood deck perfect for stargazing, yoga, and stretching with picnic table and built in benches.  *Hot water, a bathroom with toilet and shower, and an outhouse behind the cabin for winter/emergency use *Fully equipped kitchen with large refrigerator, 4-burner electric stove w/oven, microwave, toaster, blender, coffee grinder, coffee maker, French press, teas, and condiments *Wood fireplace with heat-a-lator *Oil and electric heaters Outdoors: Pure artesian well water (inside, and outdoor pump) Large hammock Weber charcoal BBQ Fire ring with log seats Outhouse  We hope you enjoy your stay in Whitetail Cabin at Back of Beyond.

    Squirrelville Cabin
    We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Squirrelville cabin. It’s a peaceful slice of Southern Oregon forest with many thoughtful creature comforts while still providing a down-to-earth (“Welcome Aliens” 🙂) in a 100+year old cabin. Cam is a wonderful host and was respectful of privacy during the trip while making sure we had great directions for arriving at the cabin. We can’t wait to find time to come back down and continue our adventures!

    Quiet and secluded outpost
    Whitetail Cabin at 'Back of Beyond'
    What a great cabin and Cam and Christine were wonderful hosts! They got us all checked in and then left us to ourselves for two days. Wonderfully dark and quiet location. The kitchen had absolutely everything you could ever need Thanks for a wonderful stay!

    Whitetail Cabin at 'Back of Beyond'
    We had a great time and the hosts were amazing. It’s such a beautiful location and a good in between for exploring that part of Oregon. The only downfall being the inordinate number of mosquitos making it impossible to enjoy the beautiful property and the close surrounding area for anything outdoors. We were literally dashing from cabin to car!! We were told that we happen to time our vacation over Memorial weekend with the flying devils hatching. I would definitely check into that before traveling. However, our hosts did everything they could to help, supplying tiki torches and mosquito zappers. I would highly recommend this beautiful location when the flying terror has passed.

    Second time to Squirrelville and it of course did not disappoint. Lots of good hotspringing was done and Cam went above and beyond to accommodate our trip dates with his packed reservation schedule! Will be back

    The Cambell’s cabin was perfect! Secluded with just the right amount of roughing it. Water for the sink was available in 6 gallon containers, excellent drinking water in a glass container with a spigot and outdoor shower. Furnished with everything you need! I will be back again.

    Squirrelville is just incredible. Everyone should experience it for themselves! You leave feeling relaxed and recharged. The hosts are wonderful people who truly think of every little thing!     Cozy Cabin Vibes

    This place was perfect. My friend and I wanted a place for a quiet getaway and this was just that. We holed up for the weekend and were so cozy. We kept the fire going and enjoyed listening to Cam’s music. His dog Suki even came to keep us company one night, she was the sweetest thing ever! Plenty of firewood to keep the place warm, everything you need to cook with, lots of music, books, games, puzzles, art supplies, etc. The electric stove pulls a lot of power so you can’t use both sides at once, it takes a little creativity to make meals that need multiple pots/pans, but definitely doable. We kept the fire roaring and we were able to use that stove to slowly heat things up/keep them warm. We wanted to make cookies but were unable to get the toaster oven to stay on, so we cooked those on the fireplace, too, it just took a while! Would definitely like to come back again sometime. Thank you, Cam!

    How I want for Christmas is .... staying at the Squirrelville cabin! Can and Christine were the unexpected highlight of our trip in the cabin. Their warm welcome and passion for the Oregon outdoors made our stay even more special. Their cabin is super homy with lots of boardgames and books to unwind. Comfy bed and couches, Christmas lights, hot chocolate, and hikes in the snow. Really, there was no need for anything else. We'd definitely come back to see the wild flowers.

    Cam was a fabulous host and I had such a great time staying at the cabin. The communication was super easy and quick and I found both the location and the cabin to be much better than the photos. The location is ideal - private and peaceful but not too remote and easily accessible with a passenger vehicle. It made for a great base camp while I spent a couple of days exploring the nearby forests/hikes. Cam was extremely helpful and gave great recommendations for nearby day trips. I felt lucky to have found such a great place to stay and the night sky was truly something else!! Would absolutely recommend to stay there!

    Quintessential Cabin in the Woods

    Cam and Christine's wonderful cabins truly provide the "quintessential" cabin experience in a very interesting part of Oregon not many people know about. The Oregon Outback is high desert territory, with few people, lots of critters and interesting vistas. Less than an hour away is Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge, which features much wildlife, and ! stunning ! sunsets. This whole area, perhaps due to the elevation, features amazing sunsets. While on my way to, or while at the Refuge, I saw an immature bald eagle, a golden eagle, a coyote stalking mice, and a small group of mule deer silhouetted against the persimmon sunset and silvered lake as I exited the Refuge. Cam and Christine are gracious hosts, and are onsite, through a screen of trees, for any questions that may arise. Be sure to check out the CDs of Cam's amazing original "Oregon" music, a wonderful, therapeutic balm for the soul. One other thing to note is that within a couple hundred miles, there are THREE hotsprings -- Surprise Valley near Cedarville, California, Hunter's Hotsprings in Lakeview, and a natural rock-walled "soakin' hole" at the Hart Mountain Refuge, so if you have a little time for your trip, you could do a hotspring "tour." DO note that Squirrelville has no internal plumbing, no bathroom or running water.... The larger cabin, Whitetail, does...

    The best!
    Squirrelville Cabin
    Campbell is extremely hospitable & lovely. Our stay here was private, quiet, & everything we were looking for & then some! The only thing we would have changed is how long we would’ve stayed because how in love we fell with the cozy cabin & the nature surrounding it. Already planning our next stay here!

    Enjoyed meeting hosts Cam and Christine. Squirrelville is HipCamp deluxe. Hot outdoor shower. No indoor plumbing, FYI. Fresh spring water provided. Enjoyed a quiet morning reading on the pasture side bench. Good freshly paved cycling road, as well as lots of gravel and dirt mountain bike roads. Note that the Oregon Timber Trail section near cabin is unmaintained. Would be good for cross country skiing. though.

    Absolutely wonderful
    Squirrelville Cabin
    This place is a slice of heaven. It’s absolutely a gem. I’m saying this at the risk of making this place a bit less exclusive, but I honestly don’t care about that and want other nature lovers to experience the beauty of the cabin and the utterly sweet hospitality of the owners. The cabin literally is equipped with everything possible to give you a remote, relaxing, tranquil and cozy feeling. The kitchen is gorgeous, with a vintage stove and fridge. The outdoor shower is amazing. The views are magnificent. We drove to Hart mountain, dipped in the hot springs and just enjoyed walking around the property. This part of Oregon is beyond beautiful. Last but not the least, Cam and Christine are the greatest hosts we have ever met. What a pleasure!

    Whitetail Cabin at 'Back of Beyond'
    This place was amazing. Is the perfect place for us to meet up with family from Nevada. The cabin was so cozy and furnished with all you could need. Just bring your own food. Very safe, quiet, and with easy to follow instructions to find. The hosts were very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable about the history of the cabins and the area. Definitely will be back!

    I love Squirrelville! The cabin is as cosy as can be, a bit kitschy with all the different eras meeting each other. It is well stocked with tea, games, books, and music. We slept soundly, so soundly that apparently we slept right through some coyote noises! The outdoor shower was fun, and the outhouse fulfilled its function (what more can you ask for?). Lastly, Cam and Christine were lovely hosts. Loved hearing about Cam's career in music composition and performance and speaking in French with Christine. I encourage others to come explore the Oregon Outback!

    Unplug, getaway and re-charge

    Our small family of 3 and 2 dogs needed to get away and unplug. We were amazed at how remote and beautiful this location was! The hosts are the BEST! Very helpful, warm and informative. This is a great getaway to unplug and leave some of your modern creature comforts behind (which aren’t missed). Gorgeous, quant, sweet and fun!

    Squirrellville cabin is a dream come true! I want so bad to live in Oregon now! Our hosts were the kindest sweetest couple and had the cabin all ready with towels and chocolates and the heater all warm. It's in the most beautiful place I've ever seen. The sunset was like none other and there's just acres and acres of land with no one else. The cabin is so cozy and comforting and it has beautiful antique stove and fridge. Also our host cam has his own music that you can play that feels and is Oregon. I loved loved loved this place. It was refreshing for the soul. Just what I needed.
