Safari tent glamping in the grounds of a charming old stone farm house, with dark skies, quiet roads and a beautiful swimming pool.

Backed into a blanket of native woodland at the top of a long, gently sloping meadow, the trio of safari tents at Lot Sous Toile have quite the view. Sweeping fields with green-blonde grass give way to the forested valley beyond. It’s at nighttime, however, that the view really comes into its own. Here, in the truly rural, single-lane-road reaches of France, the stars dazzle. With no street lighting for miles and no glowing metropolis on the horizon, this part of the Lot department has some of the purest dark skies in western Europe. The neighbouring village of Escalmels even has its own observatory.

It’s these wild views and the slow, rural pace of life, that attracted British owner Amy and her 2 children to move here permanently in 2016 - having had the property in the family for 15 years previously. The three, well spread out, safari tents can each accommodate up to six people, with a four-poster master bedroom, bunk beds and a quirky ‘cabin bed.’ The land around the glampsite is also a home for Cosmo, the friendly border collie, Darcy a very lazy cat, and many chickens. It all makes up a pleasant picture of rural, easy-going France.

Facilities-wise, the safari tents are kitted out with everything you need. Bedding and linen is all provided (beds are dressed and ready for your arrival), while the kitchen and living space has a gas hob, a fridge, a sink and dining furniture for up to six people. Each tent has its own ensuite bathroom with a glorious rainfall shower and it’s just a short walk across the meadow to the farm’s heated swimming pool. The mix of pearly new tiles and local natural stone slabs around the water are juxtaposed against the ancient stone walls of the farm courtyard, where moss blotches the roof tiles. It’s a beautiful place to relax, with a ping-pong table, swing ball, table football, badminton net and rackets and a pétanque space you can use.

While swings in the trees and hammocks in the woods facilitate relaxing in the grounds of the old stone farm house for hours, there is plenty to do nearby. The best way to enjoy the countryside (and practically car-free roads) is to bring or rent bikes and cycle around the old local villages or to the tiny town of Gourdon, about 30 minutes away, Gigouzac is only 4km away and is a very small pretty stone village. It’s an hours cycle or 15 minute drive to Catus, too, where a lake – Le Lac Vert – is great for a refreshing swim. Not that every attraction need be rural though: Cahors, entrapped within a huge meander in the River Lot, is a fabulous medieval town to explore, with narrow streets of half-timbered buildings and a famously large number of municipal gardens. The old, turreted bridge there – the Pont Valentré – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and there are stretches of the river with swimming access. It takes almost two hours to cycle there but it’s 25 minutes by car.

Backed into a blanket of native woodland at the top of a long, gently sloping meadow, the trio of safari tents at Lot Sous Toile have a really beautiful view across the rolling, forested hills and valleys beyond. We have about 18 acres of land, about half of which is forest. We are located in one of Europes 'black triangles', so at nighttime, the stars can be incredible! It is a lovely, calm and restful place for people to come and relax, to walk or cycle, swim in the heated pool, or the local lake or the little river in the valley, and visit the local sites, including the beautiful ancient towns of Cahors and Gourdon. We have a trampoline, ping-pong table, table football, badminton, pétanque, swing, and a superb tennis court is available in our nearby village. We have chickens kept near the house, and children are welcome to join us to feed them and collect eggs. Cosmo, our friendly Border Collie loves to play with anyone willing!
Nearby attractions

The rural location makes Lot Sous Toile a boon for cycling and walking (less good for public transport). Hire bikes locally or bring your own to make the most of the area, with miles of tracks and exceptionally quiet country roads. There is a small hamlet nearby with a handful of homes and the pretty stone villages of Larroque, (1¼km across a lovely valley), Montamel (2¼km) and Gigouzac (4½km). Catus (13km) is a market town with a lake on its western edge. There is a lakeside café-restaurant (0033 6 7780 4406) and you can hire pedalos by the beach there. Swimming is also permitted and there are play tennis tables too. For bigger towns, medieval Gourdon is well worth a visit, while Cahors sits in a tight, horseshoe bend of the river Lot creating a dramatic backdrop. As well as the local red wine, Cahors is known for having some 25 secret gardens, linked via narrow alleyways of half-timbered houses. Look at the river from the Pont Valentré, a medieval bridge with 3 towers (the symbol of Cahors and a UNESCO world heritage site) and visit Cathédrale St-Étienne – the town's Gothic and Romanesque cathedral. Cahors also creates a fantastic 'pop-up' beach on the banks of the river for a month in summer, with a safe swimming area, bouncy castles and pedalos. Kayaking and canoeing on the Lot (as well as the River Dordogne) is also easily arranged and makes for a fantastic, day-long family activity. There are plenty of famous châteaux within day-tripping distance; Château Beynac (0033 5 5329 5040), Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and Château des Milandes (0033 5 5359 3121) are all less than an hour away.

Food and drink

There is a small on-site shop selling essentials, homemade or locally produced food and veg and gifts. Bread and pastries can be delivered to your tent. In Gigouzac (4½km away) there is a café/restaurant/depot du pain/la poste. There is a great, traditional French cuisine restaurant in the beautiful nearby village of Peyrilles (Restaurant Mourgues; 0033 5 6531 0105) and in the neighbouring village of Ussel (Le Canard Sous L’Olivier; 0033 5 6523 6489). All the basic, essential facilities such as a spar shop, boulangerie, butchers, cash point, post office and doctors in Saint Germain du Belair (8¾km away).
