This old homestead belonged to my belated uncle Steve, and after he passed unexpectedly, I had returned to Minnesota from California and wanted to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for those interested in sharing a peaceful and modest property. The old barn is a work in progress to eventually become the base to accommodating more travelers and outdoor enthusiasts as finances permit. After working in the service industry bartending for 14 years and hosting 100+ global travelers via CouchSurfing out of San Diego, I am well versed in creating an inviting space and intend to take the necessary precautions now with the added stresses of Covid-19. We look forward to meeting you and sharing/swapping stories around the campfire! Learn more about this land: Our property and profile are in constant change as we are in a stage of development, but we look to share our land with those seeking to enjoy a warm, welcome environment for those fellow wanderers, outdoor enthusiasts, vagabonds, and globetrotters. I am a well-traveled backpacker myself and share 5 1/2 acres with my father here in a bustling little touristy town. We enjoy the company of those who endorse small footprint, sustainable practices and I eventually intend to create an eco-hostel from the conversion of our 100 year old barn. All we ask is that you respect the property, our neighbors, and make an effort to add one more new friend before you depart.

Late Fall Camping

We really enjoyed our stay at Tumbleweed, Logan and his dad are excellent hosts. The property is stunning and in excellent proximity to trails and lakes for any/all adventures - we were just passing through so we’re unable to explore. They were very welcoming to our dog who also appreciated some space to wander after a long shift in the car. Will absolutely return and would recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area.

The site is awesome! The barn makes for a really fun time, especially if raining. Logan and his family are awesome hosts. We spent most of our time around the huge fire pit while the kids played in the field. All in all, this was a great place to camp!

Best camping in DL!

This is the perfect spot for a relaxing visit to the DL area. This was our second year staying at the site and it was better this time having known what is available: firewood, yard games, And the kids had a blast in the barn!

Could not be a better place to camp in Detroit Lakes for an outdoorsy person with the recreation area next door! The farm is beautiful and well kept, the common area is extremely unique with loads of hard work put in. Logan and his father are very friendly and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. 100% recommend and will be back!

We have a camper van and the setting didn’t accommodate this. The designated camping spots are for tents only. The spot we pulled into was very close to the driveway and the road, not ideal. Not sure about availability of water as nobody came to greet or check in with us so we couldn’t ask questions even though they mentioned they would like to orient us.

The place to camp near DL

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy camping property. Locating Tumbleweed was easy. The camping area is an enormous backyard densely framed with a variety of trees. The camping area rolls far back away from the driveway leaving ample choices to set up camp. There's an oversize fire ring midway back which we and other campers relaxed around in the evenings. The firewood is included in the stay which is a huge plus. We used the outside water spigot to fill up our jugs and found it A-OK. The port-a-potties were clean. The skeeters were not bad at all for Minnesota while we were there but bug spray is still a good idea. Take the time to check out the rehab'd old barn on the property. The hosts were like visiting family - the good side of the family! Detroit Mountain is a short distance away for mountain biking, food, and beverages. There's also excellent biking around Detroit, Melissa, and Sally lakes - plan a stop for a meal on an outdoor patio on your route!

Peace, beauty, and wonderful hosts

Tumbleweed Base Camp is truly a sanctuary. Beyond the natural beauty and remarkable upkeep of the place, which has been outfitted and designed with care by people who are world travelers themselves, it's so quiet and peaceful you'd never you're within a quick drive to town. A family of deer, honeycrisp saplings, rolling hills and a marvelous fire circle would be more than enough to recommend it, but the warm welcome and wonderful conversations with the hosts make it a place to which you'll want to return.

Minnesota barn love!

We loved staying on Logan’s land. We were in a camper van and we’re directed to a level spot in the trees. Logan is a caring and generous host. All the spaces were nicely organized, very clean porta-potties with sweet lighting. Absolutely gorgeous barn for a community space fridge, and coffee maker. Wish we could have stayed longer for a movie night in the barn.

Small travel trailer experience

Our first Hipcamp experience. Logan met us outside and helped us set up. He was an extremely genial and interesting host. We stayed only one night on the well kept, beautifully landscaped grounds, but played catch, bird watched, did horseshoes, and cooked dinner at the site fire ring. Lucy, the host cat, was with us the entire time for our amusement at no extra charge. Port a potties very clean but a bit distant from our site. The barn/yoga studio/ping pong venue was amazing, as the craftsmanship was very evident. Overall, this was a calming/restful visit. We would definitely stay here again.

Great, easy spot!

I very highly recommend this spot. It’s beautiful, close enough to town, yet far enough that it felt private. The host is hospitable and kind. After arriving at about 9:30pm, my dog and I joined him and his father at the fire to chat for a bit before going to bed. Great people.

Relaxation at its finest

David and Logan were more than accommodating. David went out of his way to help us find the perfect campsite, showing us the wonderful barn they have remodeled, and making sure we felt completely welcomed. Logan provided us with all of the necessary information needed prior to our stay to ensure our experience was hassle free. What a wonderful, peaceful, and enjoyable getaway! Not to mention the incredible remodeled barn, which is a treasure in and of itself. 10/10 hands down a gem of a place to check out! ☺️
