Site 3 - Gun Smoke Ranch
We had a great time tent camping here! The campground is pristine and well kept. Porta potty is clean. John is attentitive and communicative and even brought us a BUNCH of wood after we burned through a ton of wood our first night. The campsites are all kind of close to each other but private enough to enjoy. The axe throwing stump was so much fun for our teenage boys. Overall would definitely come back!

We booked last minute. John was extremely accommodating and helpful. Very quiet and private. We were the 1st class A to camp out there. It was a tight fit, but we made it. Our friends have never HipCamped, they were amazed. This is a great place.
*we camped at site 3 with a 37 ft. class A and a 32 ft class C with so much room for activities, it was crazy! 😁

2nd annual trip as great as 1st!!!
This was our groups second time camping at John’s. He’s a great host - always accommodating, polite and available. The range in back is great, grounds are nice, porta-potty on site and great mix of shade and sun. Sites are nice and big. We’ll be back again and again.

Hidden gem
I don't really want to write this review, but John is such a great host and has a unique campground where you can shoot some guns at his outdoor range. This my second time here at John's property with a group of friends, and once again we had a great time. It is a well cared for property (and a porta potty doesn't hurt either). Even if you have no interest in shooting it is just a nice place to camp and see the stars without having to drive too far from Chicago.

This was our second time at Gun smoke ranch! John was awesome as usual! Justin was an amazing host! Had some friends come with this time. I am pretty sure they had a good time. Loved the shooting range! Hopefully we will be able to come back next year! Thank you so much John and Justin!!!

Superb location; great set up.
Range was great and much bigger than expected.
Great set up by John with tables and fire pit area.
Very very quiet at night and relaxing.
Had some car trouble and they helped out as well, really great camp spot and host.

Tent camping on Christmas 🎄
Very quiet and secluded area. The host, John, was great and gave clear directions on the camping sites and use of the range. Justin was a great help with other questions I had and help that I needed.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 days of solitude Christmas weekend and will definitely return.

Cozy with sounds of the country
Spacious and cozy campsites nestled under pine trees with plenty of pine needles providing a dry ground. Perfect campsites for getting away and spending a day at the range for some target practice. Loved waking up to the sound of roosters and ducts. JD is a very friendly and gracious host making these campsites a can't go wrong choice!

Amazing time, fun and relaxing
We had a great time. Location was easy to find. Stars, campfire, picnic table, clean porter potty, friendly host and staff all were included with our visit. 😀We enjoyed the free gun range!
This is a great outdoor family oriented camping grounds.

Right time and Right place
Loved this place!! It was so convenient but didn’t slack in anything. There are activities right on the campsite and the host is very accommodating! This is an annual trip for us and the planning was limited on time! We even got lost trying to get there and the host was very patient about it; even started our initial fire considering we wouldn’t be there until after dark after getting lost. We received free wood during this trip as well as fresh eggs(that tasted awesome!!!) will be returning again! Never thought I could camp so close to city (Chicago)

Planning the next trip
This camp site is great! It drizzled from 2200-0300 but with the tree cover the ground remained relatively dry. My son and I were on a blanket roll with two personal rain fly as shelter and we didn’t have to dry anything out except our shelter halves.
John is also very accommodating and friendly. Our group was 12 and we had plenty of room to spread out. He came and made sure we didn’t need anything or have any questions.
During cleanup the next morning, talk was about when we were coming back. We might have to reserve all three sites next time and it will not be soon enough.

Awesome weekend!
1st let me start out by saying that John is an awesome host! He had a fire going for us when we arrived and gave us fresh chicken and duck eggs. The wood was a big plus too! The campsite we were on, was very spacious and could accommodate our camper. Plenty of sun and shade. The best thing about his property is the shooting range. We really enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely be back!

What an amazing first HIPCAMP experience we had! First off mahalo John for the stay! We loved how easy to was to communicate with you, how attentive you were, and of course everything about your property! Great Private location, with lots of area to do whatever you like! We stayed at campsite 1 with a total of 14 people. Lots of shade, big area for tents/Hammocks and vehicles to park. John offered to us fresh eggs, vegetables, firewood, about anything you can think of! So generous. I would definitely recommend to anyone to camp at this great spot. If I were to rate my experience I would give it a 9. They only issue is the noise. I believe the neighbors have a motocross track and keep it going until the early morning. I could see this bring an issue for someone who wants complete disconnect/silence from the world. But for us, we didn’t mind it! And also understood this is most likely something out of Johns control. Thank you again John for the amazing stay

What a gem!!
My group and I stumbled across this spot when a camping music festival we had planned was cancelled, it ended up being the PERFECT weekend! John is the epitome of an excellent host, he was so hospitable and made sure we had everything we needed. We stayed at site 2 and it was beautiful, clean, tucked away and just what we needed - plus more firewood than we could burn. Zero complaints from us, we only wish we lived closer so we could come back all the time! We’ll be talking about this weekend for years to come!

Illinois’ Best Kept Secret
I never thought I would find the perfect campsite just over an hour away from Chicago. Very well kept, and the owner John makes sure everyone has a great time while you’re there- plenty of good firewood (dropped off right at your campsite), nearby bar/ food recommendations, and offers an on-site gun range that campers can use during their stay. Bring your own guns, ammo, and some targets (or use some of John’s pumpkins), and you have a great place to safely enjoy outdoor shooting just steps away from your campsite!
You have to see for yourself to understand what makes this place so awesome. Gun Smoke Ranch will be our new go-to for a weekend escape filled with guns and good times.

The spot was nice, fire pit, chairs, plenty of wood, nice big shaded spot. Campers in the other spot partied til 5 am the first night. Second night a group nearby were racing motorcycles or quads at midnight. Not much sleep but not the host's fault. Port a potty very clean.

Loved it!
We had an amazing stay! The ducks, hens, and roosters were beautiful. The space was large, clean, and comfortable. The gun range was right next to the camping space and John even brought us over some kiddie pools to use in the sun. This was a fun and unique place to camp and our family had a great time.
