Bell tents and pitches in quiet countryside between Cornwall’s north and south coasts

Pitch a tent between the coasts of southwest Cornwall and you can wait to see which way the wind blows before deciding which beach to head for each day. Yule Tree Wild Camping is situated in peaceful countryside that’s 11 miles north of Praa Sands and 11 miles south of St Ives Bay – with plenty of fun in between. Family-friendly attractions, including Flambards Theme Park, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and Via Ferrata Cornwall, are within 10 miles, as is the fishing village of Porthleven. Falmouth is just a little further. In summary, this is a great place for a holiday under canvas in Cornwall and if you don’t have your own tent, there are pre-pitched bell tents here for you to hire.

Although any pre-pitched tent is technically a glamping opportunity, don’t go expecting The Ritz. As the name suggests, Yule Tree Wild Camping is about getting back to basics. This is a site offering the simple pleasure of time outdoors in a lovely location on a farm. As such it offers basic and rustic facilities: compost loos, a basic shower, drinking water taps, and an open-air, cold-water washing up sink. Bell tents, if you choose one, are unfurnished save for rugs on the floor— but they are a great and roomy option if you don’t have a tent of your own. Other than that, it’s off-grid pitches all the way—so don’t forget your torch and keep your fingers crossed for cloudless skies so you can enjoy the Cornish countryside’s starry nights.

The countryside, of course, yields other delights: quiet country lanes (like the narrow one that leads you here), cute villages and lovely places to walk. Yule Tree Wild Camping is close to the village of Porkellis and you’ll spot reminders of the area’s mining heritage everywhere. It’s an interesting place to explore, but let’s be honest: you’re probably here for the beach and there are plenty within 25 minutes’ drive: Praa Sands, Gwithian, Helford, and Falmouth all included.

We are a quiet, family run and child friendly farm. We have bell tents and pitches in 2 of our fields, and there are wonderful views all around including fantastic sunrises and sunsets. We are located along a pretty bridle track and are off the beaten track for a peaceful wild camping break in a very beautiful part of Cornwall
Nearby attractions

Yule Tree Wild Camping is just over a mile outside the village of Porkellis. You can follow the bridleway which leads to the farm to head out on country walks in either direction. Another pleasant way to see the countryside is via a ride on the Helston Railway. Steam and diesel engines run along a short section of restored track from Prospidnick, four miles down the road. If that’s a little too sedate for you, head for Via Ferrata Cornwall, five miles in the opposite direction where climbing, zip wires and paddleboarding are all on offer. For beaches, Praa Sands is the obvious choice on the south coast, for swimming and surfing. On the north coast, head towards the beaches around St Ives – Gwythian is the largest and closest. Porthleven is eight miles south and at the top of the Lizard Peninsula where there are plenty of beaches, like Kynance Cove, and fishing villages like Coverack to explore all before the very southernmost pointof Cornwall, Lizard Point which is 16 miles away.

Food and drink

The closest place to Yule Tree Wild Camping for a meal out is The Star Inn in the village of Porkellis (just over a mile away). It is not open every day – and booking ahead is advised. For shops and a supermarket to pick up supplies for cooking on the campsite, head to Helston (five miles) where there are also more options for a meal out. Porthleven (eight miles) is a foodie hotspot with plenty of upmarket options to try focusing on seafood including The Square, Kota and Mussel Shoal but the simple pleasures of Porthleven Fish & Chips are a good option too. Nauti is also popular for pizza and The Ship is a popular harbourside pub.
