Woodland camping with campfires in the South Downs National Park

A good woodland campsite in the UK is a rare thing. But to find a woodland campsite that’s in a national park, allows campfires and is a 10-minute drive from the beach. That’s the stuff of dreams, right? Well, no. It turns out we’ve found it. And, not only is Fox Wood a joy, but it’s also huge, with acres of space to explore and individual glades and clearings that are good for groups and individual campers alike. It’s only open for the school summer holidays and weekends through spring and autumn. And, when it’s open, it’s the place to be. A forest hideaway that couldn’t be further from the humdrum of everyday life.

In the bottom of a gently sloping valley, just to the south of a long shelf that runs through the South Downs, Fox Wood is a 34-acre oak forest with around half set aside for tent-only camping. A track through the middle of the wood gives decent access, then you use wheelbarrows to take gear into the car-free camping space. For maximum privacy, it’s worth making the extra effort to lug your things right to the far end of the wood (around a three-minute walk), though, frankly, every pitch is wonderfully secluded and each comes with a metal fire pit to socialise around.

Visitors looking for a South Downs campsite with electrical hook-ups and plastic jungle gyms are in the wrong place. The forest is the playground here and, when it comes to facilities, Fox Wood still has the essentials families need. Excellent gas-powered showers are housed in oak-clad buildings (including some larger family cubicles) and there are proper flushing loos. Washing up areas have hot water – one alfresco row of sinks outside and second located in a repurposed mobile army building – and you can charge your phone at reception for a small fee. After that, what else do you need?

As with all the best campsites, it’s the location that really does the hard work. The woods constantly chirp with the sound of wildlife and the canopy gently swooshes in the breeze. Below, footpaths link to footpaths and start a network of opportunities, as anyone with an OS map (or those into Geocaching) will tell you. You can easily drive to Goring Beach or Arundel Castle but countless walking routes take you straight into the South Downs from the campsite. Not that you need go far. Many campers wind their way in one of two directions: The World’s End or The Fox pub – each an easy and worthy stroll away. Proper woodland camping and a pub in easy reach. Now we’re talking!

A real forest campsite...
Superb! Ian is super welcoming taking pride in his campsite. Bathrooms, showers, etc are great if not the best we've seen. Everything is well thought out; it's clear that he has planned and built amenities adding character to the experience. The campsites are large spaces separated by beautiful forest and you feel you have a private and secure area. The pitches have steel purpose-built firepits which are great, safe and clean. Firewood on-site to purchase. One of the best camp sites we have visited, we'll be back.

Sat around the fire.
Foxwood had been recommended to us and it didn't let us down! The hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. The site is great and there are many different areas for you to camp in. Although the fire pit dictates a pitch there is plenty of variation for you, and others with you, to set up near it. We loved the fire pit and it was wonderful to have some family time sitting around it. The hosts let us know about the campsite and its relation to conservation, the future is bright whilst they are there as custodians.

10/10👌🏼
Had a great time at Fox Wood Campsite! Took the kids Friday lunchtime. Was welcomed by a nice friendly face. Pitched our tent at a great location up in the corner, with our own fire pit for roasting marshmallows. Location is absolutely spot on, with plenty of fun activities and a super store all within 10 mins of the campground. But don’t be fooled, Fox Wood is a beautiful wooded area with one of the best rope swings in the South East! The kids had such a great time, I think we’ll make this a regular visit during summer break!

Great Campground… BUT…
Great campground, helpful staff…. But completely full of screaming young children running wild. If you are looking to go camping to relax this is NOT the place for you… It’s sort of like a Zoo for small children, who co stately scream and run around, like the place is infested with mini screaming Zombies!!!

Excellent Spacious Camp Site
Excellent camping, plenty of space and privacy between camping pitches. The camp owners and managers are extremely friendly and helpful. Camping facilities are super clean, well maintained and built. Only down side is the background noise of the rear carriedgeway a few miles from the campside. But I suppose that is not a super issue when you think about having no disturbances at all from camping neighbours. Camping rules are clear about music and electronic sound after 10pm. Beaches are a 10minute drive.

Forest camping
Ian and Sarah are the best hosts ever and the site is wonderful. The shade of the Oak trees was welcome in the heat. The site is spread out wonderfully. Head left for more shade and if you are willing to trek a little further with your baggage you can really lose yourself in the woods.

This is an excellent campsite, a large space under the trees where kids can roam in the dappled sunlight. The facilities were of a great standard, I didn't queue for a toilet or shower once and they were kept clean. I would 100% recommend this site

A simple perfect get away, family orientated but equally well suited to couples. Has enough facilities to make it comfortable but with out the bling of other campsites.

We camped here over the august bank holiday weekend & even though it was booked to capacity there was still plenty of space for everyone. My complaint one morning about noisy neighbours after curfew(1am!!!) was taken seriously and with understanding. Facilities were clean & showers hot. Never seen such posh compost loos. Only thing stopping 5 stars was the constant noise from the A27 but not a lot anyone can do about that.

We stay every year and will keep going back. This camp site has a lovely atmosphere, great clean facilities, large pitches in and out of the woods. Lovely fire area in each pitch, dog friendly and most of all very helpful owners.

As non-regular camper Londoners, we absolutely loved it here! We stayed for 2 nights as a couple with our dog and had a wonderful time. Facilities are great at the site, hot showers are most appreciated. We are definitely converts now and will look to camp more to get away from the city life and have already recommended Fox Wood to our friends (who are seasoned campers!). We will definitely come back again in the future!

Our whole family loved this place! So much room to play and large open spaces to set up camp, perfect for my son who has Aspergers (he likes open spaces) and nice to know that there’s no risk of loud neighbours as everything settles down around 10pm. The toilets and showers were kept immaculate by the lovely owners who made us feel so very welcome. There are woodland walks nearby but to be honest the site is so beautiful you really don’t want to leave. Pubs nearby but we only ventured to the Fox pub which we found perfect for the kids with its play area and kids menu, little bit pricey but it was a nice treat. All in all this was an absolutely perfect camping experience and we can’t wait to return, we’ll done Fox wood! Jess.

I’m slightly hesitant from a selfish perspective to write a review for the only reason that my review will encourage more people to visit what is the best forest campsite I have been to so far and I’d prefer to keep it a secret so it is available for me! The facilities, location and site are awesome and we had a fantastic time there. Our son met some new friends at the rope swing and we were happy to let him play without our supervision due to the safe and secure environment we felt around us at the site. A camp fire every night toasting marshmallows was the perfect way to relax whilst also looking up at the stars between the trees. There was plenty of space between each camp so you didn’t feel overlooked or hear other campers. Showers, toilets and washing area were well looked after and could not wish for anything else. Totally amazing place and we will be back!

The owners of Fox Wood really understand what camping is about. There were plenty of secluded sites to choose from all dotted around under a splendid canopy of trees and within easy walking distance of parking, loos and washing areas. While the site is not what some would consider to be wild camping (thanks to the very well maintained facilities) it was lovely not being surrounded by RVs / camper vans and noisy neighbours. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to return soon.

We go camping 2 or 3 times a year and this is one of the best campsites we've stayed at. We had so much space around us and felt really excluded in our camping spot with so much nature around us. Recommend going when it's bluebell season, the walks with a carpet of purple around us was fantastic. The facilities were great (washing, compost loos and showers). Campsite owner was super friendly and helpful. Brilliant pubs within a short walk away.

We're just back from a weekend at Fox Wood and we really loved it. The kids had an amazing time playing on the rope swing and running around with new friends and we enjoyed the woodland setting and easy proximity to Goring/Ferring and Arundel. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Really enjoyable weekend camping with the family. The owners were lovely and friendly and the campsite is spacious and set in a beautiful forest. Toilet and shower facilities were good although only at the entrance so a bit of a walk for some campers.

A lovey campsite. The plots are between the trees so nice and private. It was not overcrowded, even on a bank holiday weekend. The children loved the rope swing. The showers were excellent. Lovely feel to the place- just the necessary services, nottoomuch - just right.

We loved Fox Wood Camping. It is in a quiet and lovely wood where camping included open fires and wonderful walks. We walked to the local pub one night for dinner and visited the gorgeous town of Arundel where you can see the castle or walk around the gardens. It’s a great getaway from London. We will be back!

A little bit of me wants to keep quiet about this site as it’s so fabulous! Everything is perfect. I love waking up under the tall oak trees to the sound of the buzzards. The pitches are well spread out and the fire pits and little seating areas a fantastic touch. There is so much space between the tents, we make a little home from home using windbreaks and fairy lights. (For true space affectionado’s the back of the site is often empty). As soon as we arrive, our boy goes feral, running off with other kids to make dens, swing on ropes and goodness knows what else! It is kids paradise and a long way from busy roads. Because only families are welcomed, it also means that booze campers are pretty much absent and it is possible to actually get a bit of sleep! We have been three times now and just love it. It even has the bonus of being quite close to a decent sandy beach. Its a short hop to lots of footpaths and two good pubs The showers and sinks are good and a bit of composting toilet is a small price to pay for being off grid (they are kept VERY clean - much better than the disgusting fly ridden ones I have encountered at other sites). I have been to some great campsites in Devon and Dorset, but for me, this is the tops.

The best part is how little we had during the experience, relying on the limited toilet and washing facilities but it was still great. A great family weekend camping, well worth a visit

Just spent the weekend at this lovely campsite. The owners are wonderfully friendly and clearly work very hard to keep the campsite in such a clean and well kept condition. Lovely woodland environment with plenty of space and privacy between the pitches. The woods are lovely for the children to safely explore. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend.

We have stayed here twice this year in May and July. Ian, Sarah and their boys are wonderful hosts and very welcoming. the pitches are great, facilities clean and new and the atmosphere friendly. the car are left in the car park away from the tents but you can pass them on t he way to the toilet block so nothing is far to walk. the children love the freedom there and really enjoyed playing with the owners children. our second trip included a birthday party where we invited guests for the afternoon.it was a brilliant party venue, Ian and Sarah were very kind and made the occasion special for us. Thank you, we will be back!

We stayed at this lovely campsite over the early May bank holiday weekend. From the moment we arrived, Sarah and Ian were extremely welcoming and gave us all of the information we needed to get set-up. The pitches themselves are fantastic. Situated in clearings in the woodland, each has its own log seating around a campfire area, already set-up with kindling. It took us a few wheelbarrow trips to get all of our kit to our pitch but it was worth it for the tranquil, car-free environment we enjoyed for the rest of our stay. This campsite is most definitely off-grid (do take a torch!) but whilst the facilities are basic, the showers, loos and washing-up area were extremely clean and a pleasure to use. We had an extremely relaxing stay, enjoying the peace and quiet of the woodland setting. My wife and I and our two daughters all agreed that this was our favourite campsite to date and one we will definitely return to and recommend to friends.

Just returned from a great weekend at Fox Wood Camping. The site is spacious, with plenty of semi-private glades amid towering oak woodland. Each pitch had its own campfire area, surrounded by log stools and benches, and a (very slightly sloping) grassy area for pitching your tent. You're free to choose your pitch on arrival and the owners are extremely helpful. There's no cars allowed on site (parking is at the entrance), which is great for free-running children, but they do offer a gear delivery service in their vehicle, and log delivery too. There are immaculate compost toilets, a clean washing area (drinking water on tap), and hot showers (morning and evening only), which are large enough to take grubby kids in with you. Nearby pub is an easy 10min walk with a good kids playground and homemade food. There are plenty of forest trails on site and in the immediate surroundings. Our kids loved finding owl eggs, spotting foxes and deer in the forest, and having the freedom to run, play and ride in wheelbarrows around the site. Sarah and Ian are very friendly and seemingly on duty all day (thank you!). Brilliant place for a family escape.
From the host
A beautiful, family-friendly campsite nestled at the bottom of a wooded valley within the South Downs National Park. The site is located within a 35 acre private woodland, and each of the pitches has their very own fire pit area. No adult only groups allowed. Fox Wood is directly adjacent to the Angmering Park Estate, which has footpaths and bridleways within an expansive 1300 acres of woodland to explore. Toilets, hot showers and hot water for washing up. A stunning meadow for picnics and ball games. Listen to the birds sing and the light breeze rustle through the leaves. At Fox Wood it's an opportunity to unwind and shrug off the daily thoughts. Fox Wood Campsite is great for friendship gatherings and totally family focused. Sit around a campfire in the evening. Toast marshmallows, chink a glass and tell each other stories. This is where memories are made. There really is no better woodland campsite in the forest to spend your next camping trip.
Nearby attractions
A footpath on the doorstep leads you roughly north into the whopping 1300 acres of Angmering Park (01903 882220), where there are tonnes of routes to explore, including by bicycle. Continue in this direction to explore the vast South Downs National Park (01730 814810) further or head south to the coast, just 5 minutes away by car. Climping Beach and Sandy West Wittering beach are particularly popular. The historic town of Arundel is also nearby, stacked up on the banks of the River Avon. The Arundel Park Estate is well worth exploring (try circling Swanbourne Lake with the kids) and fully-restored Arundel Castle (01903 882173), established in 1067, is also a must.
Food and drink
There are three country pubs within a mile of the site, each serving great food and with gardens and play areas for little campers. They are (in order of poximity) The Fox (01903 871299), The World’s End (01903 871346) and The Woodman Arms (01903 871240). There's a Tesco Extra 10 minutes away in West Durrington, and an Asda superstore slightly further in Ferring.
