Bell tents on an apple farm just three miles from Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon

If you want to experience ye olde English countryside at its best, you couldn’t do much better than a bell tent at The Apple Farm. This off-grid site offers glamping in an apple orchard on the outskirts of the town that Shakespeare called home. Stay here and you can marvel at the views, cook on campfires, and pluck apples straight from the tree. Head out for the day and you can visit the Bard’s well-preserved birthplace, hike up to a hill with views all the way to Warwick Castle, or go for a swim at a bend in the river known locally as The Old Bathing Place.

While Warwickshire is famed for its history and The Apple Farm has a fair bit of its own, this place isn’t wholly untouched by modern life. First up, there’s the app you’ll have access to after booking, which details all aspects of your stay. Second, there’s the comfort and convenience of modern glamping: the bell tents may be off grid but, with beds made for you and a private loo and shower per tent, you’re not exactly roughing it. The third contemporary convenience is the road that brings you here. This country campsite is not far off the A46 and, while it’s a bonus for getting around, it’s fair to mention that if the wind blows in the wrong direction a little road noise can be heard on site.

It’s a small price to pay for the space and situation of a camping and glamping site where four bell tents sit among apple trees and just six camping pitches are spread across a three-acre field with views of the Welcombe Hills. Between the two, an honesty shop is the place to purchase local produce and has a fridge/freezer and plugs for guests to charge their mobile phones.

You can head out from the site on the Monarch’s Way to walk to the wild swimming spot we mentioned or a little further into Stratford town—it’s about three miles from here. There, you can visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and his wife Anne Hathaway’s house, watch a play at the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company or simply watch the canal boats on the river. Warwick Castle is another popular day out from here and just seven miles from site.

Golden Delicious Bell tent
Beautiful Apple orchards
Really enjoyed our stay! Beautiful apple orchard, good facilities! Shame about people and their dirty toilet habits! It doesn’t take much to clean up after you’ve been to the toilet!

Golden Delicious Bell tent
Lovely stay!!
Our second time at the Apple Farm. We stayed in the Cox tent this time. The tent is huge and plenty of space to store your belongings. Bed was comfortable with beautiful decor. Beautiful location, nestled under woodland and apple trees. Hot showers, flushing toilets and a water available. Hot water bottles were a lovely surprise as it was freezing on both nights we stayed. Cutlery and crockery in a lovely basket, a pot and pan and bbq utensils with a fire pit and grill. There is a portable gas stove and kettle provided too. Meal prep was easy as there is a large picnic table under the gazebo. The farm has farm animals too and we were invited to feed the calves. What a treat! Mandy was on site and was extremely helpful and friendly. Communication with Charlotte was brilliant and directions were easy to follow. Wood is for sale and a link is sent to your phone to pay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Charlotte and Mandy. Xx

Windsor Bell Tent
We hadn’t appreciated that the single beds were camp beds, so not the most relaxing nights sleep. Tent was lovely, setting in the orchard was very picturesque. We enjoyed our stay.

Windsor Bell Tent
Tent had plenty of space for our group of 6 (x4 adults and x2 children) and mattresses were super comfy. Tent is situated between apple trees which provided privacy and is a short walk away from shower and toilet facilities. Water tap is just outside the tent which was extremely handy! Original description of facilities outlined that tent comes with own bathroom and toilet, however other campers were also using Windsor tent bathroom which could be due to not so visible signage. We were also expecting outdoor area to be lit as per description but sufficient fairy lighting/lanterns for outdoor were not available. Also, battery tea lights inside the tent were not working. We had our own torches and head lights, but updating description of facilities would help to manage expectations. Overall we had a great experience and host Charlotte was helpful throughout the stay, thank you!

Traditional Bell Tent
Love our bell tent in the middle of the Apple farm. We had really lovely time resting and watching the animals there. First time glamping with no electricity ( we knew it in advance), however we neglected how cold it would be during the night. It was still freezing. (we did brought our own blanket and hot bottles) Charlotte was superb. We didn’t meet, but whenever we texted her, she replied immediately. (There is no WIFI but 3G still works just fine, and there is no issue with texting) She also sent us a very nice website with all details about the stay. However, I found some part is not clear (for example: the fire pit is with or without the firewood?) I texted Charlotte, She did reply immediately, and in this case the firewood is not provided. Overall, it was a nice experience with relaxing vibe. Highly recommends The Farm beside the Apple Farm. They have really nice butcher.

The Apple Farm is located 3 miles from historic Stratford upon Avon. With 55 acres of wide open space and some of the most picturesque views in the county we offer the ultimate countryside experience. The glamping is situated in its own 7 acre orchard with just 4 bell tents nestled within the apple trees. Each pitch has its own private area complete with fire pit, BBQ and picnic table. Each tent is fully carpeted with a sumptutous double bed, a hotel mattress, solar lanterns and side tables. We've covered all your cooking needs, just bring the food and yourselves. BBQ and breakfast hampers brimming with our very own farm produce available to buy too. Bathrooms are just a short stroll away with showers and flushing toilets.
Nearby attractions

The Apple Farm has a signposted  farm walk which guides you around some of the site’s 55 acres and there are farm tours, yoga sessions and craft sessions available too (at an extra charge when booked in advance). A handy guest app gives guests lots of information on places to visit in the near area. You’ll be given access to this after booking. You can walk to the village of Snitterfield (about a mile away), up to the Welcombe Hills or into Stratford-upon-Avon, three miles from site, on the long-distance footpath, The Monarch's Way. On the outskirts, on a bend in the River Avon, The Old Bathing Place is good for a dip if you're that way inclined. The historic town was Shakespeare's home and offers plenty of Bard-related things to do from watching a play by the RSC at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, to visiting Shakespeare's Birthplace and his wife's childhood home, Anne Hathaway's Cottage. There are lots of independent shops and eateries in its historic streets. If you still want more history though, there's Warwick Castle, (seven miles away).

Food and drink

You don’t need to go anywhere for farm-fresh produce including burgers, sausages and, of course, apples and their juice. You can pre-order breakfast and barbecue hampers after booking and there’s an honesty shop between the orchard and the camping meadow selling mostly produce from The Apple Farm with a few bits from neighbouring farms. There’s more local produce next door at The Farm, a shop and cafe, a short walk from the bell tents. There's also a traditional pub, The Snitterfield Arms about a mile away in the village of Snitterfield which is highly recommended. The Clopton Catch in Stratford is recommended for fish and chips.
