Waltonholt offers a quiet place to pitch tents or park up in a campervan near all the fun of the fair at Skegness. The town is the seaside holiday destination for the East Midlands; easy to get to, blessed with sandy beaches, and caravantastic in the extreme. In fact, Skegness was the home of the UK’s first ever holiday park. Five miles inland at Waltonholt, however, is an altogether more peaceful scene with just a handful of campers, campervans, and caravans sharing a green and pleasant two-acre field. It’s dog-friendly, within walking distance of a pub, and close to the Lincolnshire Wolds – but not too far from the coast for days at the seaside either.
This small-scale campsite is the work of resident owners John and Val Walton. Their personal touch is part of what makes the place and it’s present in everything from the name of the site to the facilities, which John built himself. And then, of course, there’s the welcome; a warm one that gives the impression that nothing would be too much trouble. Although there’s a huge difference between this and the larger sites on the coast, it does have a traditional feel. It’s not trying to be wacky, snazzy or different; it simply provides a good place to camp for all sorts of folk. That means electric hook up, free WiFi, flushing loos, hot showers, and undercover washing-up sinks. There’s a little shop with camping basics and campfires are allowed too.
It’s a walk of less than half a mile to The Red Lion in Orby, a dog-friendly pub that does good food. And if you’re enjoying life in the Lincolnshire countryside, how about a day out at the Gunby Estate? This homely country house and its grounds are one of the closest attractions to site with grand rooms, walled gardens, and a gallery to explore – as well as a handy tea room. It sits on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and there’s plenty more pleasant scenery to explore there but it’s likely, when you’re this close to the coast, that you’ll want to dip your toes in the sea. Head for Skeggy itself if you want amusements and ice creams or to Anderby Creek for a quieter day on the beach.
