Bell tents and a yurt on a regenerative farm in Shropshire

Deep in the rolling Shropshire countryside, Treflach Farm offers a place to stay in a bell tent or yurt on land that’s being managed in harmony with nature. Wildlife thrives alongside Hereford cattle and Tamworth pigs. Wildflowers are encouraged alongside veg that grows in a permaculture garden. This is regenerative farming where native species are allowed the space they need to recover. And you might say the same for the campers and glampers who come here too. The farm is a lovely place to spend time in and the glamping site has such a good set-up that it makes staying here rather easy. As well as comfy accommodation, there’s a rustic little pub that’s run on an honesty basis and a proper farm shop on site.

There are just three bell tents and a handful of pitch campers (bookable elsewhere) allowed at a time in a three-acre meadow at Treflach Farm so there’s always plenty of room. The yurt stands alone in a more secluded spot. Whichever glamping accommodation you opt for, you can expect a made-up, comfortable bed inside with a fire pit and seating outside. Each sleeps two but the yurt is the most romantic hideaway: it has a hot tub and a small wild pool that’s suitable for taking a dip. It also has its own compost loo and shower while bell tent guests share facilities. The tents are off grid but The Leyland Arms, a short walk away in a converted out-building, offers undercover space that’s got electricity and a few mod cons along with a well-stocked fridge and bar. Its kitchenette has a hob, toaster and microwave – not to mention a place to charge your phone.

Your hosts Stefanie and Ian are often busy tending the land that’s been in Ian’s family for more than 100 years and they are happy for you to explore it too. With so much to enjoy right here on the farm, including the farm-fresh food and drink, there’s really no need to go anywhere at all – especially if you’ve come to relax. But the truth is, there’s actually quite a lot to do that’s not too far from here. Treflach Farm is situated just three miles from Oswestry. It’s between Shrewsbury and the Welsh border with the Shropshire Hills, the Clwydian Range and even Snowdonia within a reasonable day trip’s distance.

Treflach farm is a 100 acre regenerative farm nestled in the Shropshire hills. At Treflach farm we practice sustainable principles, growing food and managing our landscape in harmony with nature. Our fields are lush and green with patches of wildflowers and fruit trees at the edges and bountiful hedgerows beyond. We have a heritage orchard with apples, pears, currants and raspberries and two two vegetable pots with organic seasonal produce available. We have a herd of Hereford cows, Tamworth pigs and little flock of free range ducks. We have a beautiful straw bale toilet and shower block with a washing machine available for campers to use. The ‘Leyland arms’ is onsite and open year round, a comfortable and cosy honesty bar with a large dining table, sofas, a kettle, toaster, hot plate, and a lovely wood fire. We stock local beer, homemade cider and other goodies. We also have an honestly shop where campers can buy our steaks, burgers, bacon, sausage and homemade pies, as well as other seasonal homegrown, homemade produce. The shop also stocks other essential items such as soap and toothpaste. There are some spectacular walks around the farm, especially the walk down to our half acre pond in our wetland habitat. Treflach farm offers you the opportunity to relax and unwind in a wholesome environment, while enjoying some delicious produce, directly from the farm.
Nearby attractions

Beyond the farm, you can walk to a nearby Shropshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, Sweeney Fen (one mile). It’s a small fenland site with some very rare orchids and other plants and is beautiful throughout the summer. Another Shropshire Wildlife Trust site, Llanymynech Rocks four miles from site, offers more botanical treasures, good walking and climbing in a former quarry. Offa’s Dyke Path is also only a couple of miles from the site on the Welsh border. Cross it to visit Pistyll Rhaeadr (13 miles), Britain’s highest single-drop waterfall, or to explore Lake Vyrnwy (20 miles) - on foot, by bike or on the water by hiring a canoe or kayak. The lake is only a few miles from the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and the farm is 10 miles south of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 20 miles north of the Shropshire Hills. The ancient market town of Oswestry is less than four miles from site.

Food and drink

One of the highlights of a stay at Treflach Farm is the food and drink that’s available on site. The Leyland Arms is the site’s own rustic pub – with local ales and cider stocked in a fridge and a bar with spirits infused with local botanics. It’s operated on an honesty basis. The space doubles as a camper’s kitchen and place to hang out too. There’s also a farm shop selling home-reared meat, home-grown vegetables and baked goods which are made on site. As a result there’s little need to go elsewhere – but if you do need something that’s not in stock, the closest shop is in Trefonen (two miles). There’s a pub in the village too, The Barley Mow which serves food and its own ales, brewed in the neighbouring Offa’s Dyke Brewery. Another pub, which is even closer, is The Royal Oak in Treflach itself (just over a mile away). It also serves food. For more choice of shops and places to eat, head for Oswestry, just under four miles away. It has a market on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
