A traditional campsite close to Staffordshire’s canals, river, and stately homes.
Tents, campervans, and caravans are all welcome at The White Lodge, a traditional campsite which sits between the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate and the River Trent. It’s also just up the road from Great Haywood Junction where two canals meet—and there’s a great farm shop and cafe.
The campsite is dog friendly, child friendly, and generally friendly. It offers both hardstanding and grass pitches with or without electric hook up. It’s the kind of place that does a good job of trying to please every type of camper—and, for the most part, it manages it. Kids will be well entertained with acres of space to hoon about in as well as a little play area. Parents will be thrilled if their stay coincides with a visit from the fish and chip van, which means they don’t have to cook.
It’s a laid-back site where things are kept pretty simple. There are a handful of showers and loos which are shared between all campers (around 40 pitches) and washing up is done at an open air sink. It’s just enough for a weekend away and for folk in Birmingham, Stoke, and Derby this place is a very good option for that. It’s not more than 30 miles from each of them and there’s enough to do for a pleasant itinerary over a couple of days. You can go for canalside and riverside walks, explore the Shugborough Estate, enjoy lazy farmshop breakfasts and barbecues in the great outdoors.

Views and location was amazing, we had such a lovely time just enjoy the scenery and the peace and quiet.
Camp site has everything you need.
Just gutted we had only booked the 3 nights, which we would of booked longer. Thank you!
Great location with all the essentials covered. Clean toilets and showers, lots of electric hook up pitches and nice pubs within walking distance. What more could you need?!
Nice place , good host , canal walk is so nice. Stayed for one day . Had a great experience . There is a new cafe crave cave in the next village . I recommend that also
Great host. Met us on arrival. Walked us to our spot and made sure all good. Gave us a few pointers on weather/pubs etc. Facilities exactly as on the tin 👍
Overall the owners were welcoming, we seemed to be pitched amongst a family gathering who are relatives of the owners. It felt crowded, noisy, with quite alot of unnecessary male attention. As a single mum camping with my daughter it wasn't the relaxed vibe I hoped for.
Part of the camping area gets very soggy with proper rain. It would have been good if hosts pointed this out. Shower facilities are in need of some TLC. Otherwise friendly atmosphere, great location and ample space for tent pitches
Lovely site, easy to find and access, I was only there for one night but loved it so much, am rebooking for when I’m in Stafford for longer! Close to some really beautiful walking spots too! The shower was lovely, really warm water 🥰
Very happy with the friendly service and facilities as well as the quite laid back rules. Had a lovely nights sleep on the soft ground and the pegs were easy to put in. Our group all sat around a fire in the evening which was nice. The only thing I would say is that the wooden blue shower did heat up to a nice temperature when you first switched it on, but then heated up to an unbearable heat.
All in all I will be visiting again next if our group event is the same place!
Thank you!
Fantastic site, lovely owners. Absolutely immaculate facilities, safe with a coded barrier which is a bonus for me as a solo camper. Couldn't have been nicer
25/11/2023 - We were checked in nice and quickly and shown to our pitch. We were allowed to use electric hookup which really was handy.
Toilet/shower block is a portacabin style and has hot water mostly. Toilet block seemed pretty clean and more than usable.
We wasn't given a fob which I was told on text/email I would have to for the electric gate but it didn't bother us as we didn't leave.
Cannock chase for mtb riding is only 10 minutes away which is why we camped.
Would 100% return and hopefully in warmer climates as minus 1 in a tent is horrendous!
This campsite is perfect for us, price was right, location was perfect, facilities was good, definitely recommend to friends and family and definitely be back again, hopefully for longer 😀
What an excellent camp! We stayed for 2 nights, this was our 1st time, we stayed at one a few meters down like next door) previously and this one beats there hands down no question! Would highlyyyyy recommend. We are booking our next trip there already! We camped in a tent but was also lovely area for caravans/motor homes if thats more your thing. Excellent! Bringing others with us next time :)
The campsite is well presented with good facilities. Unfortunately there were a few noisy groups, one who played loud music until midnight so we left after 1 night having booked 3. The campsite is in a good location, more enforcement of noise rules would be beneificial.
We came to White lodge for our first ever time family camping in our own tent! On arrival the owners were very attentive and lovely, they pointed us in the right direction to pitch up and showed us the amenities. The grounds are beautiful and flat (always a bonus) all other campers were lovely! The kids loved the park! The wash pot facility was very clean and tidy and the Toilets and showers are lovely and clean! No complaints from us and we will definitely recommend and will definitely be back! Thank you Carly and David!
This is a lovely flat campsite with friendly staff. Great canal walks nearby and excellent access to the amazing Shugborough Hall. We had an excellent time and would gladly come back.
Very nice and quiet place to chill out.
We tested our campervan with an awning for the first time.
All facilities are clean and close to your tent/van.
Very recommended.
Very professional welcome. Clean facilities and kids loved the park. Unfortunately the weather got the best of our tent so we left early, but would return.
A really lovely site with plenty of room even on a busy bank holiday. Good basic facilities always clean and well stocked. Close to great canalside walks straight from the site and a short drive to other local places of interest and towns.
Lovely area, lots to do.. canal walk, river Trent, local farm shop with maize maze and strawberry picking, campsite is still being upgraded and is going to be fabulous when finished! Can’t wait to go back next year and see it!
We were really made welcome, good grounds very spacious.
The only problem was a group on site near us were very loud , children running round till late shouting and flashing torches, then the older ones of the group the next night were shouting and singing loud till gone 1 am .
I know you expect some noise but gone 1 is a bit much.
They were very disrespectful to toilets, leaving a mess , but the toilet could of also done with a good clean all flies and cobwebs in lighting and windows ,
The improvement to the toilets with a new shower will be brilliant.
But over all very nice break .
Thank you.
Great location the kids loved their first camping stay

Nearby attractions
The campsite is within the Shugborough Estate, where parkland and gardens surround a Georgian Mansion. It’s open to the public thanks to the National Trust and you can walk here, via the canal, in about 10 minutes. There’s a children’s play area, tearoom and cafe too. The canal towpaths and riverside walks provide easy ways to head out on walks straight from site and the Staffordshire Way passes close by. The Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Wolseley Centre is three miles from the site with a visitor centre, trails and a cafe. For cycling, and cycle hire (if you haven’t brought your own bike), there’s Cannock Chase Forest (six miles). You’ll also find a Go Ape treetop adventure course there too. And if it’s thrills and spills you’re after, Alton Towers theme park is only 21 miles away.
Food and drink
The Canalside Farm Shop and Cafe is a real bonus for campers at The White Lodge, just a couple of hundred metres from the campsite. It serves good coffee, breakfasts and lunch and the shop has its own butchery for fresh meat for the barbecue. During the summer months, there’s also a pick-your-own strawberry and raspberry patch. The closest pub to site is The Clifford which has a menu of pub grub.
