A tent that’s ready pitched and a bed that’s made for you. Now ain't that just swell? Perhaps that’s why this bell tent camping site was christened Swell Camping at The Orchard. Or perhaps it got its name thanks to its views and proximity to one of the best surf beaches in the UK. Either way, surfers, swimmers and sunseekers looking for simple accommodation close to the waves will love it here.
There are seven five-metre bell tents lined up on a grassy, orchard-backed meadow in a lofty position about a mile from Saunton Sands, a stretch of beach backed by the dunes of Braunton Burrows. Although it’s technically close enough to walk to, those in the know suggest driving down to the beach as there are busy roads to negotiate on the way. And, anyway, with surfboards, body boards, wet suits, and buckets and spades in tow, you’re probably going to need a car. It’s a five-minute drive to the car park for Saunton Sands or a ten-minute drive to even bigger surf at Croyde. The area is (ahem) awash with surf schools so even the inexperienced can take to the water on a board and there’s great coastal walking too.
After days bumming around on the beach, stop off at Braunton for dinner and then head back to your bell tent to kick back or crash out. The tents are stylish bedrooms in the great outdoors with views – and a very nice facilities block nearby. They don’t have cooking equipment or campfires but hey, you’re on holiday, why not take a break from cooking and check out the wealth of cafés and eateries serving up surf-friendly breakfasts, lunches and dinners nearby?
Furnished bell tent with sea views, accommodates 2 adults and up to 2 children.
