Basic pitches (without toilet facilities) in Forestry Commission-owned woods beside a renowned mountain biking trail

Cannock Chase is well known for its woods and wild terrain, as well as being home to some of the Midland’s finest mountain bike trails. This is all very much captured at Tackeroo Campsite. The site is all set on Forestry Commission Land and pitches are spread amongst the trees (tall pine, spruce and evergreens). As for feeling wild? Well the place has no showers, no toilets and pretty much no facilities at all, save for some rubbish bins and a waste disposal point where you can empty your chemical toilets (which you’re required to bring along if you want to pitch here). There are some taps, too, where you can fill up your water tank and perhaps fill up your bicycle water bottle too. You have come here with a mountain bike, haven’t you?

Tackeroo Campsite is set directly alongside the ‘Follow The Dog’ trail, the Midlands’ first (and probably still best) dedicated mountain biking trail. Outside of peak camping season the campsite hosts popular mountain biking events and the area is a general hub of all things biking – head south for the Monkey Trail or north to explore Cannock Chase Country Park. It’s around a mile from the campsite to Birches Valley Forest Visitor Centre, a good place to grab some brochures, get your bearings and make a plan for exploring the area. There’s a GoApe! Activity centre, a Gruffalo nature trail for families and a decent little café there too. Oh, and more mountain biking trails of course.

Camping here is basic to say the least. There are no toilets or showers, so you will need to bring your own chemical toilet facilities with you – this means a portable chemical toilet for tenters as well as caravanners. Water taps, rubbish bins and chemical waster water disposal points are on the campsite. Campfires are not permitted.
