5 Glamping
Grown-up bell tent glamping within walking distance of Cheddar Gorge.
It doesn’t take long to work out how Owley Woods got its name. As soon as the sun starts to set, over nearby Cheddar, the owls begin their nightly twit-twoo. It’s a soothing serenade that accompanies the crackle of campfires at this adults-only glamping site on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Owley Woods Glamping is a bijou little site, with five Lotus Belle Tents set up in a paddock that’s about an acre in size. Despite being high on the hills above Cheddar, the surrounding trees mean it’s a sheltered spot, which is probably why the owls and other birds like it too. But for Paula and Matt, who’ve decided to share this space with us glampers, it was the view that clinched the deal. From parts of the site, you can see Cheddar, the reservoir beyond, and right across the Somerset Levels. The West Mendip Way passes close by the camping field and provides a route to it all; to the shops and pubs of the village, to the top of the gorge, or through it. Those who like to walk will be most happy to rest their heads here, and grateful for the proper beds and cosy bedding that’s inside the five-metre bell tents. They are spacious for two and dogs are welcome to stay with their owners. Although they are off-grid, there’s solar power for lighting and, handily, for charging phones. Each tent is kitted out with cooking equipment and there’s an off-ground fire pit with a barbecue grill outside as well as an outdoor log burner that doubles as a hot plate for cooking and kettles. If you don't fancy cooking though, it’s close enough to wander down to Cheddar (a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive). There you can gorge yourself on cheese (pardon the pun), pick up some Somerset cider, or visit one of the cafes or pubs. The busy tourist trade means there are plenty of places to choose from. Walking, cycling, caving, and climbing are all possible right here but if you fancy exploring Somerset further, Wells, Glastonbury, and towns on the coast are all easy days out too.
