Hillside hideaways with log burners, roll top baths, and great views in Somerset

Happy on the Hill: it’s both the name of the place and a fair description of how you’ll feel at this peaceful glamping site in Somerset. It’s home to just two cabins; each a unique bolthole that’s tucked among trees and secluded in its own space. It’s an ideal place to hide away for a few days or to base yourself if you want to explore some of Somerset’s sights. You’ll be soothed by nature, positioned within walking distance of Bruton, and wowed by the view from these eco-friendly, dog-friendly cabins for two.

Choose from Gabriel’s Wagon and Jake’s Cabin, both made largely from recycled, reclaimed and re-used materials. That’s certainly true of Gabriel’s Wagon, the basis for which is a restored railway carriage. It sits in a small orchard and is full of charm. Jake’s Cabin, while no less charming, is roomier with a glass front that makes the most of the view. It’s built from larch and cedarwood and nestled under oaks that are home to owls you’ll hear twit-twooing at night. Inside, each accommodation has a bathroom with a roll-top bath, a kitchenette, a comfy bed and a log-burning stove. Outside, each has a covered seating area so you can enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather—and there’s a fire pit as well.

The reclaimed materials and the homegrown organic goodies in the highly recommended breakfast hampers (which you can book at an extra cost) speak of your host’s commitment to protecting the environment. So too do their suggestions of what to do and how to get around. Walking is high on the agenda, with recommended routes described shared on hand-drawn maps, but there are E-bikes for hire as well and there’s EV charging if you’ve come by electric car. On foot, the lovely town of Bruton is a good destination to head for. It’s two miles from the site offering gardens, galleries, and independent shops to explore. There are more of those over in bohemian Glastonbury, which is better reached in the car. The same goes for Cheddar Gorge, Wells, and Bath. All are temptingly possible days out from here and none of them are too far.

Jake’s Cabin
A peaceful stay up on the hill
Our cabin stay at Happy on the Hill couldn't have been anymore peaceful or relaxing. Jake's cabin was really cosy and inviting and felt really homely, from a wood burning stove, to ample facilities and comfortable bed it was bliss. Not forgetting the incredible views over the countryside ahead!

Jake’s Cabin
Warm and Cosey
I barely want to share what a great Cabin Susan and Neil have. It will increase demand and mean it’s harder to book when we need another break. On the other hand it is too good to keep to myself. We found a beautiful quiet spot, despite it being January the cabin was beautifully warm and cosey. We did miles of walking to the great pubs in the area. Just the break we needed. We will be back very soon.

From the host
Tucked high up on Creech Hill, with one of the best views in Somerset, Happy on the Hill offers a delightful escape from normal life. This magical place nestles under ancient woodland that protects it from wild weather and brings you close to nature. You need go no further if beauty, peace and relaxation are what you are after and to enjoy it all, we offer two beautifully crafted and comfortable places for you to stay: Gabriel's Wagon and Jake's Cabin. Surrounded by birdsong and a bird’s eye view over the hillside, from both Gabriel's Wagon and Jake's Cabin you can watch buzzards circling in the valley below and get to know our resident owls that roost in the oak trees. Happy on the Hill is as inviting in the depths of winter, as the summer: a suntrap when the sun shines, a cosy look out when the rain and snow falls and the best place ever to watch the spectacular sunsets that fall behind Glastonbury Tor on the horizon. With beautiful walks from the door in all directions this is a happy haven for dogs as well as their humans. The cultural and gastronomic delights of Bruton with Hauser & Wirth and At the Chapel are an easy walk away along the beautiful old drovers lanes, which are also a joy to explore.
Nearby attractions

Happy on the Hill is in the Somerset countryside a couple of miles outside Bruton. It’s a good spot to walk from with some suggested options from your hosts including the hike up nearby Creech Hill to the site of a Roman Temple and some circular routes into town. Ebikes are also available to hire on site or from Bruton, and offer another nice way to explore the near countryside. Bruton is a well-to-do town with lovely independent shops and eateries as well as the Hauser + Wirth gallery and gardens. The attractive market town of Castle Cary is four miles away with The Newt, an impressive country estate and gardens, just a little further. Wells, the UK’s smallest city with its impressive cathedral and bishop’s palace, is 12 miles from site, Glastonbury with its tor and abbey, is 15 miles away, and Cheddar Gorge is 20 miles. Bath with its Georgian architecture and roman baths is another option for a day trip (24 miles away).

Food and drink

You can pre-order a breakfast hamper for your stay which will include Happy on the Hill eggs, jam and juice. For more tasty local supplies, perhaps head for The Organic Shop, a lovely co-op in Bruton (two miles). The town has some great options for eating out too including At The Chapel, Matt’s Bar and Roth Bar at Hauser + Wirth where there’s also a good farm shop. Country estate, The Newt (five miles), also has a garden cafe and a restaurant, The Botanical Rooms, serving homegrown and local produce. There’s a cyder distillery on site too where you can join a tour to find out about the cyder making process. For a pub serving food, try The Three Horseshoes in Batcombe (four miles).
