A riverside campsite on Offa’s Dyke Path near Knighton

Panpwnton Campsite occupies a couple of fields on the border of England and Wales, with a national trail, a river, and a scenic rural railway passing through. No wonder it's been keeping campers happy since 1963! Set on a sheep farm that’s been passed down through generations, this charming campsite is both a handy place to stop off if you’re hiking Offa’s Dyke Path and a great base from which to explore both sides of the border. The town of Knighton is a ten-minute walk away and the site itself provides good old-fashioned camping on the farm.

You call in at the farmhouse on arrival and are directed, most likely by host, Roxanne, to pitch your tent pretty much wherever you please. About eight acres of this 80-acre farm are given over to tents, campervans, and motorhomes and, though the space is vast, a sensible cap on numbers means it’s never crowded. Should you really want to get away from it all though, ask Roxanne where the wilder, tucked away pitches can be found. Wherever you choose to pitch you’ll be off grid; there’s no electric hook up here but there is a shared camper’s kitchen. It offers a kettle, microwave, fridge-freezer and a dishwashing sink. On top of that, there are flushing loos and hot showers, all kept super fresh and clean. Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits and logs are for sale.

If you don’t fancy campfire cooking, there’s a little cafe, Offa’s Treats, offering hot food from a horsebox with riverside seating. Think bacon butties with good coffee at breakfast and burgers for your tea. It’s the perfect way to set yourself up for a day on the trail or to reward yourself when you finish. Offa’s Dyke Trail leads you, in one direction, to Knighton and in the other to Knucklas Viaduct: both worthy destinations for a short walk and handy places to stop on longer hikes. There are certainly plenty of those around here.

We are a very relaxed campsite where you pitch wherever you like. Toilets and hot showers on site. We are a short walk into town where you can get most things.

Great campsite, lots of space, nice comfortable level pitch. Perfect location next to a river and 15mins walk from Knighton. Nice walks directly from site. Clean facilities.

This campsite is set in a beautiful location with lots of surrounding walks. The pitches themselves are very flat with perfect ground for pegging the tent. The site has excellent facilities, the shared kitchen and hot showers and clean toilets are perfect for any family trip.

We loved our time and Roxanne was brilliant! Came around to check everything is ok but not too intrusive. It’s lovely and quiet with the occasional train and Knighton a very short walk away!

Living camping

This camp side is very big , you can pick your own spot , there is stream of water between two camps low enough to dip your feet in but not deep enough for swim or any water activity. There are toilets and showers and also little coffee open all day with choice of breakfast baps, sausage rolls , cakes which are fantastic, selection of coffees and tea , you can pay by card . There are lovely walks round try the one uphill worth it for the views . You aloud fire pit aswell lovely in evenings time. We went in August which was more busy but we still had enough space for ourselves. Torch is needed for your night time walk to the loo . I would definitely come back , very nice area and very friendly owners

Located on the edge of Knighton (right on the England-Wales border) Panpwnton Campsite has been open to visitors since 1963. Providing travellers with a peaceful place to stop on some of England and Wales’ most famous walking and cycling routes. Now managed by Will, Roxy and family, we would love to welcome you to Panpwnton Campsite and show you why we are proud to call this beautiful place our home. The campsite is on our working farm, where we keep a flock of 300 texel cross breeding ewes. We are very passionate about farming. Our aim is to produce lamb in a green and environmentally friendly way, striving to reduce our carbon footprint whilst working alongside nature. A family run farm campsite situated on the Offa’s Dyke footpath. Located in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we are ideally located for those who like to walk, cycle or just take in the peaceful countryside. With magical nights under the stars listening to the owls hooting in the oak woods. It’s the perfect place for your rural camping holiday! A ten minute walk into the market town of Knighton, with its iconic clock tower, friendly pubs and cafes, and the Offa’s Dyke Centre. The River Teme runs through the farm where you can dip your feet after a long day exploring, or freshen up in our modern facilities. The heart of wales train line also runs through the farm with the Station only half a mile walk away.

Nearby attractions

Panpwnton Campsite is on Offa’s Dyke Path so it’s ideal as a stopover for walkers who are tackling the whole 177-mile route or as a base for anyone who might like to use the well-signposted footpaths for day walks. Follow it south for just a mile and you reach the town of Knighton. Alternatively you can drive there in a few minutes. This market town is home to the Offa’s Dyke Association Visitor Centre, a small museum and a station on the Heart of Wales train line. It’s a rural route which connects Knighton with other stations between Shrewsbury to the north east and Swansea to the south east; travelling through scenic countryside. Buy a one or two-day ranger ticket for unlimited travel which allows you to hop on and hop off and enjoy connected countryside walks. Knighton is also the starting point for another national trail, Glyndŵr’s Way and for the long-distance cycle route, the Trans Cambrian Way. And on its outskirts you can visit the Spaceguard Centre and Observatory (Weds-Sunday only). There are plenty of castles in this English-Welsh borderland including the National Trust’s Croft Castle (11 miles), Stokesay Castle (16 miles), Ludlow Castle (18 miles) and Powis Castle (29 miles). Hay-on-Wye is 25 miles away.

Food and drink

Offa's Treats is the on-site cafe at Panpwnton Campsite operating on weekends (and occasionally on weekends too - check ahead). It serves hot drinks, breakfast rolls and burgers. If you're cooking for yourselves and need supplies head a mile into Knighton where there’s a good butchers, a great Co-op and a handful of other shops. The town also offers some good places to eat. For coffee, cake, breakfast, brunch or lunch, try locals’ favourite The Black Sheep Cafe. There’s Knighton Plaice for takeaway fish and chips and a choice of pubs. The George and Dragon has a good menu that’s all gluten free while The Horse and Jockey is a cosy and traditional pub that’s dog friendly. For modern British restaurant food, try The Banc. If you walk in the other direction to see Knucklas Viaduct (three miles), you could eat at The Castle Inn which has a menu featuring good pies and Thai food.
