A simple campsite in a field on the banks of the River Thames

Otters Camping at Beale Park offers the chance to pitch your tent or park your campervan in a riverside meadow in Berkshire. And if the mighty Thames flowing by isn’t enough water for you, there’s a lake right next door too. It all makes for a rather relaxing setting – though it’s worth mentioning that you might hear the train from London whizzing by. For plenty of people that will be an added bonus; this place is accessible as it is rural with Pangbourne Railway Station a riverside walk of just over a mile away. To get there from London Paddington takes a mere 45 minutes on the train.

Whether you arrive by campervan, car or the train, there’s so much to do in the very near vicinity that you’re unlikely to get bored. Beyond the ample space of the 10-acre camping field, there’s that lake with its watersports (paddleboard hire, open water swimming sessions, water ski-ing, and more), the neighbouring Beale Wildlife Park and the National Trust’s Palladian mansion and gardens at Basildon Park. And then there’s Pangbourne itself; the closest place with a pub, a shop, and a bridge across the river so you can hop across and join the Thames Path National Trail.

The campsite is just downstream of a beautiful stretch of the River Thames called the Goring Gap, between the villages of Streatley and Pangbourne. It’s a picturesque place to camp and if you’re wondering why we’ve not said more about the campsite itself, it’s because there’s not a lot more to say. Thomas, your host, has kept things simple offering basic facilities for those who are happy to look after and tidy up after themselves. You’ll find portaloos and drinking water – but no showers, washing-up sinks or undercover space. Campfires are allowed here as are well-behaved dogs and groups. The pitch-where-you-please policy helps make it a particularly good place for those as you can cluster tents as suits your group. Arrive early and you might just be lucky enough to get a pitch with a view of the river or lake.

Choose where to pitch your tent or campervan either near the lake or with easy access to the river. There are firepits provided to gather round or camp near or if you prefer a more private setting there are quieter pitches in the further places of the site. Both loos and drinking water are in easy walking distance wherever you pitch.

Fantastic site with great access to the Thames & the lake though sadly we were asked to leave the lake. Nice & quiet site sadly let down by the portaloo, will we visit again - yes we will but you need to be on top of those loos.

I had an amazing camping experience at Thomas' campsite near Pangbourne! The convenient 30-minute walk from Pangbourne center made it easily accessible. Being just a 10-minute walk from Basildon Park was a bonus, as it provided a perfect spot for picnics. The toilet facilities, equipped with portaloo's and bins, were decent. I highly recommend visiting The Swan for a scenic riverside pint and trying out The Elephant for a delicious Sunday roast. Overall, a fantastic camping getaway with great local attractions and amenities.

Lovely spacious field with access to the river through a path in one corner. Had a very chilled stop over having canoed from Wallingford.

From the host
We are a family friendly campsite in the heart of the Berkshire countryside. We are next to the River beautiful Thames as lazily makes it way between Streatley and Pangbourne. We also front onto a lake fed by the Thames where people can Paddleboard and swim. We are surrounded by stunning views of countryside, river, and lake creating a bucolic scene. We have a toilet block on site and access to running drinking water.
Nearby attractions

Otters Camping is part of Beale Park, a 350-acre estate which is also home to Beale Wildlife Park. There, you'll find exotic animals as part of a zoo and farmyard animals too – as well as a children’s play area and gardens. It’s just a two-minute walk from site. The neighbouring lake has watersports on offer including open-water swimming, paddleboarding and water ski-ing from Hi5 (all at extra cost) and another company, FACE, offers clay pigeon shooting and laser tag to groups (book in advance). You could also walk over to Basildon Park (about a mile away), where the Palladian Mansion, gardens and parkland is open to visitors thanks to the National Trust. A tow path along the River Thames offers a good place to stretch the legs or walk the dog in either direction. Head east and you reach Pangbourne after about a mile. There, you can cross the river and join the well-signposted Thames Path National Trail for longer walks or bike rides. It’s also part of the King Alfred’s Way cycle route. If you’re not confident to explore on your own, get in touch with Goring Gap Wildlife Walks who offer campers 15 percent off guided tours in the area to help visitors see the wildlife in and around the river.

Food and drink

Otters Camping occasionally has food vans visit the site offering snacks and drinks, but other than that the closest place to head for (apart from the cafes at nearby attractions) are in Pangbourne. Walk along the towpath, and you soon reach The Swan, a gastropub right on the riverbank. Pangbourne centre is just beyond and is home to a mixture of independent cafes, pubs and restaurants. It also has a Londis and a Co-op too if you prefer to cook yourself.
