Church spires, campfires and local food suppliers – proper camping

There’s many a way to toast a marshmallow. Some give it a brief hazing over the flames, warming it to a pleasant softness but never daring risk its skin. Others plunge it headlong into the furnace, blackening the outer shell like an overcooked roast potato but bubbling the inners to a sweet and sticky goo.

We all have different tastes and, provided you adhere to the general ethos of loving the great outdoors, The Hideaway at Baxby Manor (to give the campsite it’s full name) is the kind of site that caters for every appetite. True the no music policy means party animals aren’t welcome and the narrow entrance lane keeps the big-boy motorhomes away but for everyone else this is a real camping playground. Families lazing by the campfire, cyclists retracing Le Grand Depart, walkers enjoying the space of the countryside and history buffs nipping out to the old centre of York – it’s got the full range of flavours.

Set in the grounds of 14th-century Baxby Manor on the edge of quaint Husthwaite village, this is a hideaway worthy of its name. Approached down a single lane track with trees on either side, the six-acre meadow is home to just 40 grassy pitches, each with a firepit and all spread evenly around. In the centre of the site, opposite a young but flourishing orchard, is the main facilities and reception building and there's a purpose-built on-site Pizza shack (The Pizza Shack@Baxby Manor) which is open every day during school holidays too.

On the south east edge of the campsite Ings Beck quietly flows, though the flank of trees on the river bank mean it acts more as a natural fence than a focal feature of camping here. If you do fancy pitching on it’s edge its best to book early, since that side of the campsite is where The Hideaway’s glamping accommodation is found.

Those travelling light will love the luxury Hoggit Houses – something akin to a hobbit’s Yorkshire holiday home – with proper beds and log burners inside. There’s also a handful of hexagonal eco-pods and a magnificent treehouse in a copse of ash, oak and sycamore, with a wood-fired hot tub on its terrace and views north to the White Horse of Kilburn, etched into the moors five miles away.

Just like the camping facilities, all of the glamping accommodation meets the highest environmental standards. Since the year it opened The Hideaway at Baxby Manor has consistently received awards for its eco credentials and it’s easy to see why. By the time you leave, though, the greenest thing is your own unquenchable envy, jealous of all the other campers who aren’t yet heading home.

Hoglet House
What a fantastically well kept and beautiful campsite. We had an awesome weekend despite almost non-stop rain - the kids are already asking if we can come back next year.

We stayed for three nights in a pod and with two other families in tents. Five adults and four children. The pod was amazing - quaint, cosy and great fun. The facilities are the best we have experienced. Loved the ethos of the site. The perfect spot to get away for a few days and unwind. Great experience for children and adults alike. We have booked Hobbit Houses for our next stay and can’t wait to return.

We love The Hideaway and have been visiting for years. The pitches are spacious and flat and each comes with it's own fire pit (you can purchase wood from the onsite shop - very reasonable too). The site is perfect for those wanting to relax and spend time together. There's plenty for the kids to do - ride there bikes, explore the little stream, climb the trees, hunt for bugs or play games. The facilities are always clean and are of a high standard. Barney and his team have worked hard to create and maintain a beautiful, tranquil site. We are already booked in for our next visit!

Double EcoPod (Dog-friendly)
Stayed in a eco pod. Fantastic. The pod was amazing and bigger than expected. Fantastic to sleep in and great seating area with fire pit outside. Stream running behind was a added bonus for filling feet in on a hot day. Toilets showers very clean and modern. Great shop must try the village cider. Lovely surrounding areas.

We arrived in Oct 2018 and had a long weekend. Showers clean and warm despite a frosty morning. Little shop well stocked. The fire pits were great for toasting marshmallows. Gorgeous walks from the site and lovely and quiet. They were really helpful when we had VW trouble - highly recommended!

We love this campsite, real campfires, big pitches, peaceful surroundings and great facilities. The pub in the village and the coffee van on site further enhance the experience. It is our favourite place to camp at the moment and I am sure it will continue to be. But shhhh don't tell anyone!

Nearby attractions

It's a 5 minute walk from the campsite into the village of Husthwaite, one of many old settlements around here that appeared in the Domesday Book and still reflect their history in Norman churches and exposed Tudor beamed buildings. Families staying in range of the campsite will find a tennis court here, along with a pleasant pub (Tomahawk Steakhouse). If you're looking to avoid the car there are plenty of great walks and cycle routes that link up the various villages. Elsewhere, though, its 3 miles to Shandy Hall (01347 868465), home of picaresque novelist Laurence Sterne, and a little further to Byland Abbey (01347 868614), formerly one of the greatest early Gothic buildings in northern England, now left in magnificent ruins since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Other top attractions in the vicinity include Duncombe Park (01439 770213) and must-see Rievaulx Abbey (01439 798228) – both within the North York Moors National Park (01439 772700) and approx 5 miles away.

Food and drink

They have have a purpose-built on-site Pizza shack (The Pizza Shack@Baxby Manor) which is open ever day during school holidays  for breakfasts and homemade stone-baked pizzas.. There's also a local favourite butcher who makes appearances on request – you can hire a tripod and grill onsite for cooking on your own campfire (£5 for the duration of your stay). Pub-wise the Tomahawk Steakhouse at Husthwaite is just down the road, a 5 minute walk away.
