Creatively-converted horse lorries in the Norfolk countryside

Sometimes you simply need to get away in nature and hide away from everything else. That’s what stays at Get Away Hide Away are all about. Here, you’ll find two well-converted horse lorries permanently parked up in a wildflower meadow. Each is a self-contained, off-grid hideaway that’s ready and waiting for you to arrive and take it easy under Norfolk’s starry night skies. Any buzzing here comes from the bees and any tweeting comes from the birds, both of which are in abundance in this half-acre plot along with badgers, hare and deer.

While Dixie and Douglas, the two horse-lorry hideaways are both off grid, they do have solar power for lights and charging devices via USB ports – just don’t tell the kids. That way you can have the kind of old-school holiday this place is designed for; one where you chat around the campfire, explore the countryside, and play a board game or two.

Dixie is the most family-friendly accommodation as she has room for up to four. She’s also hardly recognisable from her roots with a new roof and lots of decking. Douglas, meanwhile, is a vintage Bedford dating from the 1960s, sleeping up to three. Both have their own toilet and shower facilities a few steps away and, inside, are well set up with kitchenettes and log burners with bedding and towels provided.

Whichever you choose, there’s a lot to admire as they’ve been lovingly converted by hosts, Tori and Ciaran. You won’t necessarily see them during your stay but you’ll see their care and creativity everywhere you look – and they are never far away if you need them. This land is part of a family farm that’s passed through five generations. It’s no surprise, then, that they know the area rather well. Their local tips are given in a guestbook. You can follow their suggested routes for a walk and take their advice on which nearby pub to visit. You can get their tips on what to see in Norwich or which beach to visit on the North Norfolk Coast, both of which are just 20 miles from this hideaway.

Dixie - Luxury Converted horsebox

Tiny home · Sleeps 4
Dixie is a repurposed horse lorry with lots of character and surprises hidden on her many levels. Set within its own half acre wildflower meadow with perfect views of the thriving and constantly evolving wildlife. Set to one side of the lorry is a large luxury walk-in shower room. The space also plays host to the well maintained composting loo. The sink is crafted from a well worked slab of yew, acting as the table top for the stone sink held up with twisted ivy lengths. Set to the other side of the lorry is the large firepit complete with generous seating arrangement, ambient lighting complete with bbq tools and a purpose made griddle for the tractor rim fire pit. Leading up to the lorry is a wide climb of steps to enter on to the first floor deck. This large decking area is ideal for spilling out from. Be it sharing a meal with others or simply lying back into a canvas deck chair and taking in all the space has to offer you senses. Another climb of steps takes you up to the top floor decking area. Towering four meters, above the surrounding landscape this deck is the perfect viewing platform to observe the site wildlife. Boasting a tin roof carefully designed to be placed to add maximum privacy. With subtle evening lighting the warmth from the inside bleeds through the stained glass on the secret hobbit door. The inside space whilst off-grid, offers many home comforts that you might not expect. A large Belfast sink, housed in locally sourced milled and worked wood, provides warm suds for washing up. Whilst in the kitchen the fridge / freezer and four hob grill / oven makes for a well-stocked space for cooking. The inside dining option, provided by another hand crafted and worked yew slabt. Set to the rear of the lorry is a large sofa bed providing a comfortable and sociable space. As the nights draw in and the weather turns cooler the wood burner adds instant comfort to the living space. Whilst the weather might keep you from sitting around the firepit it won’t keep you indoors. Our top deck is also covered from the weathers worst elements via a pig arc shelter roof. To keep yourself dry you can also access this top deck from the internal steps and through the hobbit door. Retirement to the king size top bed is accessed via the oak library ladder. With many lighting options controlled by the switch panel right of the internal climb to the hobbit door with coveniently placed USB sockets throughout. Integral high-quality blue-tooth sound system for those lazy lorry days.

Douglas - Vintage Horse Lorry

Quirky · Sleeps 3
A truly unique hand crafted living space can be found within this restored & converted 1967 Bedford horse lorry Douglas. Buried within the Norfolk wildlife, you'll find the hidden off grid eco-friendly space. With 1/2 an acre of wildflower set outside the unit, the space is designed to be shared with nature - the perfect get away. Just a few steps from the trucks rear door there is a private modern shower unit and a separate, comfortable, well maintained compost toilet. Both facilities boasting sky views (we wont spoil the surprise). Just in-front of the outdoor decking area is a sizeable fire pit, complete with a seating area and removable griddle - a perfect space for al fresco dinning. Within the lorry kitchen area there is a 4-hob cooker grill, kitchen sink and work top. In this rustic setting cooking is a different experience and some of our guests have even proved baking is possible. The repurposed loading ramp decking area then provides the perfect setting for eating under the moonlit sky or taking shade under the boat sail from the sun. The French doors can be pushed wide open to extend the floor space to the loading ramp decking area, with steps leading to the fire pit. When the sun goes in, power from the sun’s rays throughout the day is stored in the battery bank and recycled back around the site for the many subtle lighting options, USB charging and pumping water. As the weather turns cooler, the wood burner can transform the lorry from a summer retreat into a cosy romantic seasonal get away. The woodburner gets the truck toasty in no time and, with the views changing with the seasons it's the perfect viewing spot for wildlife. Tucked away above the cab is a cosy super king size bed, once you’re up there it’s hard to want to get down. Underneath there is a small bed tucked away, suitable for a child or small adult. The sofa bench seat can make another cosy sleeping area (you'll need to provide your own bedding if using the sofa bench). You can even take to the wheel and explore the restored drivers cab. A perfect place to note wildlife. Butterflies, roe deer, hare, badgers, hedge-hog, buzzard, red kite will all often be seen - Sometimes all just in one afternoon.

‘Get Away Hide Away’ is a small family-built and run glamping site tucked away in the beautiful Norfolk countryside in the small hamlet of Elsing. We have lovingly rescued and converted two wooden horse lorries into cosy hideaways for couples and families to enjoy in their natural surroundings. Each lorry comes completed with own unique and quirky private composting toilet and shower, plenty of private outside space with a large firepit/BBQ decking and seating area. We are the 5th generation on the farm and we'd love to share our local knowledge. Our welcome guide has helpful maps listing attractions and facilities close to site. We are constantly reminded of how lucky we are to live in such a rural spot with the diversity of the wildlife. In any one day you could see deer tracking, all sorts of bee's and butterfly's. Often many birds of prey such as red kites, buzzards and owls can be seen hunting. The nature within the village of Elsing fortunatly attracts the sort of resident that can live alongside natural and respect how our living here could impact upon it. Whist walks and bike rides in the area can be littered with little gems of locally run amenities. If you do decide to venture out in the car you are only 30 minuets away from the coast. Due to where we are geographically placed in Norfolk you are spoilt for choice of beaches of all varieties. Whether you are after a 99 on Cromer pier, a day trip out to Southwold, seal watching at winterton (please always respect the seals they are wild animals) or some of the more secluded spots around the coast all within a short drive. The broads are also within reach for day trips. Norwich is a thriving city with an amazing arts and music culture, we highly recommend spending a day here. We look forward to sharing our local knowledge with you in our welcome book and in conversation if you request it.
Nearby attractions

Get Away Hide Away is on the outskirts of the village of Elsing, about five miles from the town of Dereham. The village and the glamping site are a good place to set out from for peaceful walks and bike rides in the surrounding countryside and there are some suggestions in a welcome pack provided by your hosts. Kids are well catered for in the nearby area with ROARR! The dinosaur-themed adventure park six miles from site and The Bug Parc even closer, just four miles away. There’s also BeWILDerwood, the treetop adventure park, just over 20 miles away. It’s the same distance to the coast and being Norfolk there’s plenty of that. Wells-next-the-Sea is probably the closest place to hit the beach, but Blakeney and Cromer are not much further and all offer something different within the protected landscape of the North Norfolk Coast. Winterton with its seals and Southwold with its quirky pier are other options too. The lovely city of Norwich is just under 20 miles away and well worth exploring.

Food and drink

Tea, coffee and handy essentials like salt and oil are provided in the hut and if you want to cook, there’s a small farm shop two miles down the road, Dann’s. The speciality there is ice cream made with their own milk from cows in the surrounding fields but you can also buy super fresh milk from their vending machine and other local produce too. There are village shops for other basics in Lyng (two miles) and Swanton Morley (three miles) but Dereham is not much further and has plenty more shops including supermarkets. For a meal out, you could walk in an hour or so, or drive in a few minutes, to one of three local pubs. The Lodge in North Tuddenham is probably the closest, just under two miles away, and specialises in grilled and griddled food. The Fox at Lyng is just a little further and Darbys in Swanton Morley is three miles away.
