Camping and glamping in a spacious meadow on a South Norfolk smallholding

Tucked away in the heart of the East Anglian countryside, the appropriately-named Driftways provides campers with a place to drift away from their nine-to-five and into laid-back country life. Owners Vanessa and Andrew have created an eco-friendly site in a meadow on their smallholding that was once reserved for making hay for the farm’s horses. But now, when the sun shines there’s no work to do and visitors can kick back in camping chairs and enjoy the scenic surroundings.

Driftways features off-grid camping pitches for visitors with their own equipment, and spacious bell tents for those who lack it. Whichever you choose, the amenities are generous; there's a compost loo for each pitch, and with two hot-water showers there’s rarely a queue to wash off the previous day's adventures. The site’s seven pitches are mown into the grass and big enough for family tents. The five bell tents are spacious too, each boasting a king-size bed and two pull-out singles with additional beds available on request. There’s a log burner to keep you warm on colder nights, and a sweet little blanket box with extra blankets and hot water bottles.

Although the site's rural views make it feel as though it's in the middle of nowhere, you're never far from somewhere. And during your stay, your somewhere could be the city of Norwich with the beautiful River Wensum running through its heart or the more local trails of Tyrells Wood which is only 300 metres away. The Boudicca Way also runs close by providing a place for ramblers to stretch their legs and The Broads are a half-hour drive from here for those who like to paddle. Or perhaps your somewhere could be the authentic village pubs serving up hearty food and drink a short drive away from site. Wherever it is, Driftways will provide you a comfortable spot to drift away in and an excellent base from which to explore.

Driftways Glamping and Meadow Camping site is based at Moat Farm, in the heart of the East Anglian countryside and is surrounded by farmland. Even though it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere, the site provides easy access to a huge range of attractions and amenities across the local area. There are 13 spacious pitches, 5 individual bell tents for glamping and 8 oversize camping areas mowed into the meadow grass. All pitches have their own clean compost toilet, campfire area, picnic bench and cooking area. Each glamping structure also has a fully equipped kitchenette and own device charging facilities. Shared hot gas and solar-powered showers are available nearby for all guests to use. Nearby there are a wide range of walking and cycling routes including the Woodland Trust’s Tyrell’s Wood just 1/3 mile away. Site owners Vanessa and Andrew aim to provide guests with comfort in nature with an off-grid glamping and camping experience and therefore the site aims to be as eco as possible. Recycling bins are provided but guests are politely asked to keep glass usage to a minimum. The site is across the lane from our smallholding and ‘The Dairy’ provides access to plug sockets and a fridge and freezer. Shop items / extras can be purchased by contacting the site owners. Driftways is dog friendly and allows dogs for a small fee.
Nearby attractions

There are great walks and cycling nearby and the Woodland Trust's Tyrells Wood, which has a popular circular route is just 300 metres from Driftways. The site is also on the Boudicca Way which is a long-distance 36-mile walking trail between Diss and Norwich. There is a private swimming pool, two miles up the road, that can be booked for up to eight people (ask on site if you would like the details). There are also public pools at Bungay's Waveney Valley Leisure Centre, 11 miles away, and at Beccles where the pool is an outdoor lido (01502 713 297). There are two small play parks (at Pulham Market and Pulham St Marys) about three miles away and a bigger one at Harleston five miles down the road and, if the weather is bad, Long Stratton Leisure Centre (01508 531444) has a soft play. Norwich is a half-hour drive from site and the Suffolk coast is about 40 minutes' away (30 miles) where you can visit quirky Southwold Pier or Yarmouth Pleasure Beach. The Norfolk coast at Horsey Gap takes a little longer to reach (it's 35 miles away) but is the best place for spotting seals. Cromer with its famous crabs is just over an hour's drive and within the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Closer to site are the peaceful inland waterways of the The Broads National Park. Norfolk and Suffolk are home to plenty of family-friendly attractions, those within 15 miles include Banham Zoo (13 miles), Oasis Camel Park (12 miles) and Bressingham Steam Museum (14 miles).

Food and drink

Goodies Food Hall and restaurant (01379 676880) is within a mile of site and is great for local produce with its own butchery and dairy counters and for cream teas in its restaurant. For more than that, there's a Co-op at Long Stratton (three miles away). Harleston, has a market bi-weekly and an Adnams Shop among its high street shops. There are two pubs in Pulham Market, The Crown Inn (01379 831239) and The Falcon (01379 676815). Both serve food and more options including takeaways in Long Stratton that deliver to site. Cherry Lane Garden Centre, which has a café and camping supplies is also within a couple of miles of site.
