John's Hut by the millpond

100%
(2)
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 2
Follow the path around the millpond to find the characterful and rustic John's Hut. Sitting in a paddock nestled by the millpond it is the larger of the two huts and comfortable for longer stays. A small double bed, tucked away at the end, has a supportive mattress and dressed in a pretty cotton ticking, and an all season hypoallergenic duvet made from 100% grade A long-fibre Mulberry silk. The blue Hungarian dresser is thoughtfully stocked with tea and coffee should you wish to stay cosy in the hut with a hot drink. A basket of wood is provided for the small Salamander stove that keeps cooler evenings toasty warm ... in the mornings throw open the stable door and watch the millpond's ducks. Later, sit at the pine table overlooking the chestnut tree with a pot of tea, cake picked up from a rural farm shop and a board game taken from the wooden box. What else? The hut has electricity and an outside light. A relaxing 'egg' chair with room for two overlooks the millpond, there is a hammock, and in the summer an old French day bed dressed with rugs and cushions creates the perfect retreat. Under the trees is a table and chairs. There are other places around the millpond in which to relax, take your pick! For evening warmth sit around the hut's fire pit (or fire bowel at the field kitchen) and chase stars under exceptionally dark nocturnal skies. Why not enjoy sizzling sausages with a glass of wine? Under the hut is a 'belly box' with two folding chairs. Not far is the quirky Field Kitchen - equipped with crockery, pans, toaster, fridge and gas stove - there is a table and chairs both inside and outside this space. In less than a minute, situated in the mill yard, is a bright and clean private washroom with flushing loo and hot shower solely for private use. Bath towels are provided. Whilst the hut has a small stove, during our variable summers if it's feeling cooler when temperatures drop overnight there is a small heater available to use. There is a quilt and blankets in the hut. A well behaved dog is permitted in John's, there is a small additional fee (please ask before booking). Breakfast, this is an optional extra and can be added prior to your stay. It is priced per night for two people and not per reservation (£16). Enjoy delicious organic freshly baked bread, organic preservatives and butter, Dorset Cereals muesli with Greek yoghurt to accompany, ground coffee, milk and fruit juice.

Miller's Hut by the millpond

Booked 1 time
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 2
Miller's Hut overlooks the millpond of a working stoneground organic flour mill near the hilltop town of Shaftesbury, famed for Gold Hill and the 70s Hovis ad. Guests will enjoy the site to themselves (we have another hut, John's, but never book both at the same time unless you require the two). An original shepherd's hut, in cosy Miller's you will find a small double 'floating platform bed' with supportive mattress dressed in William Morris's pretty Strawberry Thief design. A cupboard with pretty ticking panelling, and tea making, and chair with a sheepskin throw add charm and complete the space. What else? The hut has electricity (a small heater is available for those colder evenings) and an outdoor light. There are outdoor chairs, a hammock, rugs, cushions and lanterns, and you'll find many corners to retreat. In a tin shed, a few strides from the hut, is a quirky Field Kitchen. Enjoy dinner by candlelight, or al fresco, before settling by the fire pit to watch the starry sky. The kitchen has a small fridge and gas stove, as well as an assortment of crockery and pans etc. Spring water is supplied in a glass Kilner dispenser. Guests have access to a private bright, clean washroom in the mill yard with hot shower and flushing loo. Towels are provided. Shaftesbury has many small independents and pubs. Stroll up to the town (20-30 minutes) across fields and up lanes, or hunker down for an afternoon by the millpond, breathing deep sighs and letting stresses fall away. Being on the edge of Fontmell Down, there is good walking and far-reaching views across the Blackmore Vale. The open, ancient chalk grassland of the lower slopes is covered in wildflowers in the spring and summer months and is famous for its wild orchids. Bath, Longleat, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Brownsea Island, the Isle of Purbeck, Thomas Hardy country and the Jurassic Coast are all within easy reach, as are the beaches at Bournemouth, Sandbanks and Studland. There are many local National Trust properties too. Traditional country pubs are plentiful, the Chalke Valley has many with beer gardens and good bar menus. Of course there are gastro pubs too; the King John at Tollard Royal, The Museum Inn at Farnham, and Swallowcliffe's popular Royal Oak are recommended. Maps are available to borrow, and a folder of local knowledge, compiled for your use, can be found in the huts.
