Old school camping in the Peak District on the edge of Lathkill Dale

Mandale Campsite is found in The Peak District, England’s oldest national park and where the right-to-roam was first established. It’s an appropriate setting for a great-value site that offers the kind of camping that sorts proper campers from fair weather ones. This is a farm campsite spread across a couple of fields, with another set aside for intrepid Duke of Edinburgh groups. That alone might tell you all you need to know; this place is great for walking and outdoor adventure. Arm yourself with an OS Map and set out from here to find your way into nearby Lathkill Dale. Follow the river, head towards the neolithic Arbor Low Stone Circle or make your way to Bakewell, which is just three miles away.

The main camping field is large, flat and family friendly with the option of electric hook up. The second one is smaller, quieter and sloping with a little more shade round its edges. Whichever you choose, don’t expect much more than a place to pitch your tent – oh, and beautiful countryside views beyond the site’s dry stone walls. You’ll also have access to immaculately clean, traditional facilities. That means flushing loos and coin-operated hot water for showers and washing up. Save your 20ps and pound coins for this – or ask for some at reception. It may seem a little old fashioned but the folk behind Mandale Farm know a thing or two about camping as they’ve been keeping campers happy for more than 20 years. Their old-school pay-for-what-you-use approach ensures a level (ahem) camping field and keeps pitch fees as affordable for a solo walker as they are for a family group with a campervan.

Both types of camper are welcome here. In fact, most types of camper are welcome here. Campers with tents, campervans or motorhomes are all allowed as well as campers with dogs. Only large groups are discouraged from this place. Music and campfires are a no-no as well but barbecues are a-okay. And if you don’t fancy cooking, you can head out to one of the two pubs within two miles or into nearby Bakewell where there are plenty of options.

We have two fields for the general public. Our main field is ideal for families and small groups. We also have three Hook Ups on this part of the campsite. We have two toilet blocks, one shower block consisting of four showers in each and a washroom with a fridge and freezer . Breakfast van available on Saturday Sunday and bank holiday morning 8 am to 10.30 am Showers are one pound for 5 minutes. Hot Water is charged at 20 pence a minute and is coin operated. Our 2nd field has a bit of a slope but is still a very picturesque and peaceful place to camp. Please note: We do not allow large groups or loud music. Camp fires are not permitted but we do allow disposable barbecues. Dogs are allowed but must be on a lead at all times when on site. For Bank holiday weekends there is a two night minimum stay. For Hook up bookings on Bank Holiday Weekends it is a three night minimum stay.

Beautiful quiet site. Toilet/washing and shower faculties all great. We made use of the on-site fridge/freezer which was so handy. Delicious ice cream too!

Comfortable camping with views 😍
We recently had the pleasure of staying at Mandale campsite while supporting my brother during his 52km Ultra Challenge in Bakewell, and I must say, it was an amazing experience. The campsite itself exceeded all my expectations. First and foremost, the location was absolutely stunning. Nestled amidst nature, the campsite offered breathtaking views that truly showcased the beauty of the surrounding area. The facilities at Mandale campsite were top-notch. The campsite was well-maintained, with spacious pitches that provided ample privacy. The restroom and shower facilities were clean and conveniently located, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic stay. Additionally, the staff members were friendly and attentive, always ready to assist with any inquiries or requests. One thing that stood out during my stay was the sense of tranquility and serenity that enveloped the campsite. It felt like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing me to connect with nature and unwind in a peaceful environment. Overall, Mandale campsite is a hidden gem that we all must experience. We can't wait to return soon 💚

Nearby attractions

Mandale Campsite is in the southern part of the Peak District National Park on the edge of Lathkill Dale, which is a picturesque place to explore on foot. There’s plenty of walking and other outdoor adventures across the park including climbing, caving and cycling. The site is three miles from Bakewell, six miles from the grand medieval house, Haddon Hall, and eight miles from the even grander, Chatsworth House. The Monsal Trail provides traffic-free, family-friendly cycling nearby on a disused railway track which runs from Bakewell to Blackwell Mill, some nine miles from site. Arbor Low Stone Circle is an enigmatic neolithic site five miles from the campsite for history lovers while for action-hungry kids, Gulliver’s Kingdom Theme Park provides family-friendly fun 14 miles away.

Food and drink

For campsite supplies, you’ll need to head to Bakewell which has plenty of independent shops and small grocery stores too – not to mention The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. You can pick up the sweet treats for which this area is famous for – or eat in at the cafe. There are plenty of other eateries in town but for a pub that’s closer to the campsite, head to Over Haddon and The Larkhill Hotel (family run, with a pub-grub menu). Perched at the top of the slope into Lathkill Dale, it has truly excellent views and is a pleasant one-mile walk from the campsite. Alternatively, head to Monyash (two miles), where the dog-friendly pub garden backs on to the village play area.
