Off-grid camping and glamping in the High Weald of Kent with campfires, acres of space and a farm shop on site

In the rolling scenery of the High Weald AONB in Kent, this gently sloping camping meadow is aptly named. Cloudless nights, of course, can’t always be guaranteed but, when they arrive, the stars here are dazzling. Bedded down in the long grass of this former hay meadow, you can throw another log on the campfire and gaze endlessly into space. For those leaving the well-lit haze of London, it’s a particularly popular spot. It can be tough to believe this small rural site is just half an hour from the M25.

Given its proximity to London, Star Field is a pleasingly paired-back and basic affair. It will suit anyone who wants to really cut the cord from urban life as this camping and glamping site is entirely off-grid, with neat composting toilets and gas-heated showers. The sheer space on offer means your pitch only ever feels hemmed in by nature – by long grass, cowparsley, wildflowers and trees rather than other campers.

There’s a sliding scale of comfort and wildness from the basic camp pitches where you pitch your own tent to two fully-furnished safari tents; with bell tents between. Wildest of all are the ten camping pitches which share facilities and space in the main camping meadow. For wildish glamping, choose an unfurnished bell tent. It has its own composting loo, picnic bench and even beds inside but it’s a step less tamed than the furnished bell tents which have bedding, a shower and an outdoor kitchen too. Most luxurious of all are the pair of safari tents which have their kitchen inside, a stove, a sofa and solar power to boot.

Star Field is set in one of the most picturesque meadows on Charity Farm, now under the fourth generation of the same family. It began life as a chicken farm before diversifying into selling hay, straw and forage from a small on-site country store. Over time, the store expanded and you can now buy the latest knitwear or a Joules raincoat when you come here camping as well as half a dozen farm-fresh eggs from the clutch of free-range hens which still occupy the farmyard above the campsite. For more than that, Cranbrook Farm Shop is next door, stocked full of local produce and goodies.

Elsewhere, you can walk to Bedgebury Forest right from the site (or get there by car in under five minutes with parking free of charge). It’s a half-hour walk into Cranbrook, the smallest town in Kent and a thoroughly pleasant place, with a host of excellent independent cafés and pubs. A working windmill, built in 1814, dominates the local skyline there, while the local church also holds a little known historic artefact, the prototype for the clock on Big Ben. It’s 10 minutes to Sissinghurst Castle, 15 minutes to Bodiam Castle and 20 minutes to Scotney Castle – all owned by the National Trust – while the coast around Hastings and Camber Sands is 35 minutes or so by car. In all, though, this campsite is the sort of place where time will happily be ebbed away around the campfire or simply doing nothing at all. After all, that’s what disconnecting and being off grid is all about.

Dandelion Bell Tent
Perfect site, well setup
We had an amazing time camping here in the dandelion bell tent. The tent itself was very clean and enough room for us (2 adults, a 5 & 3 year old). The setup outside is perfect, a picnic bench for meals, a fire pit that entertained us each night and the most welcome part of all - a hot shower in a beautiful little bathroom just for us! It was all very well setup and had everything we needed for 3 nights of disconnecting from the hubbub of life. Star gazing each night, shooting stars, great walks - Oh and the farm shop has everything you need (a little pricey but worth it for the convenience of being right there). There’s also a useful power station where you can charge up devices and a freezer to cycle your ice packs. It’s a perfect little site that I’m sure we will be coming back to. Thank you David & Debby!

Brilliant first experience glamping
Wonderful experience staying in the Nettle tent! First time camping / glamping and went with our 16 month daughter and Debby & David had thought of everything! Very clean and quiet- exactly what we needed for a short break! The bed was comfortable, the toilet was clean and shower hot! Farm shop sold some delicious food and we will absolutely be back as soon as we can!

Nick's Field pitch 3
Beautiful campsite in a beautiful setting. The long grasses and trees surrounding the tents made it feel like you were in the heart of nature. Loved the showers, feeling the cold breeze and seeing the trees whilst washing was an experience. Stars were amazing on a clear night. Debby and David are both very pleasant people and happy to help where they can. Lovely farm shop too, eggs were delicious! Thank you Starfields camping.

Lovely stay. We stayed in Nick's field which is the field next to the main filed. The main field is prettier but Nick's field is a bit more private. The toilets were amazingly nice, clean and had no bad smell whatsoever. The place was very well organised, the farm shop was very well stocked. We had a lovely tim.

Dandelion Bell Tent
Pleasantly surprised with the overall experience. The tent was spacious, clean and ready for a big family of four. Beautiful and clean surroundings, very well equipped shops and great farm shop. Friendly staff and nothing went unthought, there is a power point to charge phones and keep ice packs cold. Definitely will visit again and highly recommend. Composting private toilets are a unique experience 😂 but you can used to it. Loved the peace and quiet.

Elder Grass Pitch
Having camped for forty years I guess we've experienced quite a few campsites!! This one gets our thumbs up as, apart from the weather which we can't blame Star Field team for, it ticked all our boxes!! We chose the 'Elder' site which is beautifully sited down the hill in a glade backed by bushes/blackberries, it would get good sun.... but not the best site if it's raining heavily and the water is cascading down towards you as was our experience on day 2....still, it allowed Mike to be 'manly' and dig a trench which diverted the rain though we were squelching around in mud - the joys of camping! We watched most of our fellow campers being pulled out by the owners in a tractor - fun to watch. We loved the hot showers (2), which were kept spotlessly clean. The composting toilets were short drop ones (2) which I would imagine in hot weather might be a bit 'pongy' particularly as there was no sawdust. Knowing that there were only two loos we took our own portaloo - advisable particularly if you're coming with children. The farm shop is fabulous, not many places where you can stagger up for a croissant and fresh fruit in the morning. But agree that it is much cheaper to bring staples with you. Great location for Sissinghurst, can highly recommend The Milk House where our friends were staying. Not far from Rye, Dungeness and Derek Jarman's garden....lovely area all round and a great stay!

Thistle Bell Tent
The site is lovely, tucked away from the world and nice and quiet. The compost loos are very clean and the showers are nice and hot ! Being able to have a fire to cook our meals and sit by at night was a real bonus ! The farm shop is convenient however prices are much higher for staple name brand items than would be in a standard supermarket so try not to forget the essentials like I did ! But I will add that it was nice to buy local fresh affordable produce and meat ! Walking along the tracks was very nice but I wouldn’t recommend walking along the road unless you are highly Visible, lots of blind bends and no paths

It's a really beautiful campsite - rolling fields surrounded by hedgerow and woods. Very clean toilets and excellent hot showers. Lots of space to run around, very peaceful at night, and you can really see the stars. You can have a fire near the tent. The owners are really nice and helpful. Highly recommended!

Hazel Grass Pitch 1
We came here as it was convenient stop off but ended up staying 4 nights- lovely tucked away site, off grid, plenty of composting loos and good gas showers in individual huts. No extra lighting which was great! The farm shop is really handy on site but do bring what you need- it’s not open in the evening and they’d run out of the size gas we needed. We were able to cook on a campfire so it was fine but you’d need to be prepared and up for it! Any rain and getting on and off the field is tricky, any more and it’s impossible without 4wd or a tow. Easy walk on tracks to cranford with great curry and micro pub, but horrible walking along the road as loads of fast traffic. Would definitely come back- the owners have taken great care to create a lovely space with a very relaxed atmosphere

Great setting, good distance between pitches. Really justified it’s name as the stars were really bright at night while we were there; beautiful! Lovely walks, nice farm shop next door and quick access to supermarkets etc. Only real downside was the slightly sloping pitch.... just need to pitch tent to the angle of the slope...!

The good: a lovely field in a great location. Pitches are well spread out too. We also had amazing weather! The showers and washing up facilities were good The bad: Toilets were the worst we've seen and we've had experience with long drops etc. Here there was no sawdust and the toilet just had a dustbin under it! The smell when we left was awful. I think for the Glamping there are individual loos which are maybe better but not for camping. No hand sanitiser either...

Loved the campsite - clean facilities, laid back and spacious. We were on the Hawthorne spot - which was great for catching the evening sun. It is half way down the field - and we did notice the slope (however, were aware of it when we booked). Otherwise - all good, and we appreciated the farm shop - which meant we had fresh croissants for breakfast, and locally sourced meat for cooking over the fire in the evening (we managed to get back at 5.20pm each day - with 10 minutes to buy supper before it closed.)

We had a brilliant weekend at Star Field campsite in their Nettle glamping pitch. The facilities were amazing, clean and really well presented with loads of extra touches such as tea, coffee, sugar and washing up liquid! All the things we usually forget! It’s a quiet site and you are pitched far away from others so you have the secluded feel without being totally in the middle of nowhere. The farm shop is also a huge bonus!!

Great campsite, awesome farmshop. They were very good with covid measures. So clean, they cleaned everyday. *just to let people know, we had 2 days of rain and when we packed up and left, it was difficult to get out of the site with the mud and wet grass* The only issue I had was the toilets (not because they were compost toilets, even though they didn't smell like all other, stinky, compost toilets), the issue I had was, there wasn't enough room to move, disrobe and turn to sit.

Absolutely loved the layout of the field, plenty of space in between pitches. We had a small issue with our pitch when we arrived but the owners of the site were fantastic in sorting it. The toilet facilities and showers are fantastic in appearance and cleanliness. We walked into Cranbrook for lunch using the footpath which was a lovely walk. Would highly recommend a stay at the site, we loved it!

Perfect first Glamping experience with our 2 and 4 year old. Everything was reassuringly clean and it gave us extra peace of mind to have our own bathroom and kitchen facilities so nearby. Is set on a slope though which wasn't an issue for us but just something to bear in mind :)

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay in Dandelion. The campsite is small and quiet and there is lots of space between all of the tents so it feels like your own private field. Everything was set up for our arrival and all the facilities we needed were close by. The well stocked farm shop with veg and local produce were both within a minutes' walk of the field for everything we needed (logs, milk, breakfast items) and more. There is a short 1 mile walk to the nearest town for cafes and pubs. And there is lots to see and do around the beautiful landscape of the High Weald all within a short drive. We will be back!

From the host
Star Field Glamping and Camping at Charity Farm is a family run glamping and campsite based on a working farm in Cranbrook, Kent. If you're looking for a simple off-grid country retreat to enjoy a well-earned break with a clear view of the night sky, then we've got a pitch for you. If you fancy something a little more glamorous, we've got you covered as well. If you have an event going on, or simply want to take a break with all your family and friends and want to book the whole site we can organise that too.
Nearby attractions
The South East of England is real castle country and Star Field is well placed to visit the best preserved of them. It's a 15-minute drive to moated Bodiam Castle (01580 830196), a 14th century marvel that is the classic image of a castle, while Leeds Castle (01622 765400; 30 minutes) is built on an island in a widened section of the River Len and is a truly spectacular sight. It's a 20-minute drive to National Trust-owned Scotney Castle (01892 893820), too, though this is more of a country house than a castle, with extensive gardens (which are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a celebrated example of the Picturesque style). It takes around 40 minutes to drive from the campsite to the coast – Camber Sands is the nearest well known beach – while Bedgebury Forest, great for walking and cycling on car-free trails is within walking distance, or a 2 minute drive, Bedgebury Pinetum is a 25 minute drive and Bewl Water is just beyond. The tiny market town of Cranbrook is a 20-minute walk or 5-minute drive away and worth wandering to, with ample independent shops and some historic eateries alongside newer establishments (see Food & Drink).
Food and drink
Cranbrook Farm Shop (01580 712546) is a one-minute walk from your camping pitch and sells local produce, hot teas and coffees and take away lunches as well as being a Cook outlet. For larger shops, there is also a Co-Op in Cranbrook (5-minute drive or 20-minute walk). Cranbrook has three pubs: Larkins' Alehouse (07917 252585), the first micropub in Cranbrook, is best for real ales, while The George Hotel (01580 713348) is the posh oldie of the bunch – it's been open since 1300! The White Horse (01580 720727) is the most lively option, with live music from time to time. Cranbrook also has a plethora of cafés – try Arthur’s (01580 720880) for good coffee, Cocolicious (01580 714954) for sweet treats and afternoon tea or Waterloo Tea Rooms (01580 713802) for a quirky setting among the antiques and good views of Cranbrook's windmill. Further afield, it's a 10-minute drive to The Milk House (01580 720200) in Sissinghurst – it's a good one for families, with dogs welcome and a large outside space with a play area for children.
