Rustic glamping in the Kent countryside between Folkestone and Canterbury

A rustic treehouse and a cabin in a beautiful valley a few miles south of Canterbury’s medieval streets could be the setting for a fairytale. Or, well, it could be the setting for your next staycation in Kent. These two hideaways in the garden of a 15th-century farmstead certainly seem to have a touch of magic about them. The treehouse is suspended 20 feet in the air, built in and around three living oak trees whose branches and leaves share the space with you. And although The Granary is more traditionally located, on the ground, it is no less charming; with a log burner and a ladder up to a mezzanine bedroom in the eaves.

Playful as these spaces are, they are very much designed for grown ups. Both the treehouse and its ground-level counterpart sleep two and are perfect for a romantic weekend away. One where you can enjoy reading books in your cosy bolthole, going for long walks in the countryside and toasting marshmallows on the fire. If you’re looking for something truly different, the treehouse holds more appeal – but it’s the simpler of the two. Its single living space, with views over neighbouring fields, has electricity to power lights and a little kitchen corner with a single electric hob and kettle. Its toilet (a chemical one) is outside and downstairs – and has no running water; just a bowl and jugs with a tap for refills outside. It’s enjoyably rustic but if that doesn’t sound enjoyable to you, perhaps plump for The Granary. It’s more spacious and better equipped with a log burner, galley kitchen, an en-suite shower and flushing loo.

Both are situated in a far corner of host Mark’s garden with direct access to the surrounding fields and footpaths. The village of Elham, a mile away, has everything you need for the weekend – a small shop and a choice of pubs for lunch or dinner. If you want to explore more of Kent; the seaside towns of Folkestone and Hythe, are both within 10 miles, and the cathedral city of Canterbury is just a little further than that.

The Granary
Everything you could wish for.
Everything about our stay this weekend was perfect. From Mark’s excellent and more-than-warm hospitality, to the beautiful Granary lodge which we were sad to leave. Nothing was too much for Mark, and it did not go unnoticed. I recommend this stay wholeheartedly. Thank you again, Mark.

Highly Recommend staying here. Beautiful location. The accommodation is delightful. Very comfortable, warm and cosy. Well equipped. Mark is fabulous host. Very welcoming and offered us advice on the local area. We were spoilt warm bread too 😋Gentle cycling routes and lovely, local gastro pub with excellent food.

The Elham Treehouse
What a great stay. Property was immaculate, the township was a great little spot & a great spot to base yourself to explore the areas around. The host was great, nice easy communication and very helpful. The treehouse its self is wonderful. I stayed on possibly the windest night we will have in this Uk this year and it was still warm and cosy, the second night the weather was still, a small fire before heading up and it was everything you want when thinking about booking this property and more. The fresh bread to start the day is the icing on the cake.

Fantastic country getaway
We had a FANTASTIC time staying at The Granary and Mark was a brilliant host. We would recommend this space to anyone looking for a country getaway. We didn't travel by car but this wasn't a problem. Mark very kindly offered us a lift from Elham to the property but it was only a 15-20minute walk into town on evenings when we wanted to eat at the pubs (and Mark lent us torches to help us find out way home). There were gorgeous walks right from the door, and a cosy fire to curl up in front of when we got home. Mark had also provided lots of essentials (tea, coffee, milk, jam, marmalade and fresh bread!) The shower was hot, and the bed was cosy - and as others have said, the space is larger than it looks in pictures - we found it was great for the two of us. We would stay again if we were returning to Kent - and we'd highly recommend the Kings Arms for Sunday lunch and the Abbot's Fireside (who do takeaway pizza if you want to eat at home!)

The Granary
Simply the best of its kind!
The Granary is the nicest glamping experience me and my partner ever had. It's really cosy but roomier than I had imagined it, so super comfortable. It's set up really nicely with anything one might need (blankets, towels, wood for the fire, kitchen utensils, mini fridge) and want (books and dvds for the dark winter evenings). The bed is really wide and comfortable too. A bonus for me is the impeccable taste with which it's been furnished but in a very authentic and functional way! I will be recommending The Granary to friends and family and hope to go back soon.

Located on a 15th century farmstead in the historic village of Elham, The Elham Treehouse and The Granary are cosy rustic escapes less than 2 hours from London. The treehouse features an inviting and comforting interior nestled between three sturdy oak trees. The treehouse is made of recycled timbers with uninterrupted views across the glorious north downs. The granary is an old grain store sitting on padstones converted , using entirely recycled timbers, into a snug space with separate sleeping area and bathroom. Wood burning stove tv galley kitchen and outside bbq area will ensure you have a cosy getaway. Located in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty, Elham Treehouse provides access to acres of pristine countryside, gorgeous footpaths, and quaint towns including Elham and nearby Canterbury. Just a short 30-minute drive away is the beach, including Whitstable, with various villages offering unique gifts and heirloom trinkets.
Nearby attractions

Elham Treehouse and The Granary are a mile outside the village of Elham. There’s plenty of good walking in the area including on the Elham Valley Way which leads to the coastal town of Hythe (nine miles) in one direction and to the historic city of Canterbury (13 miles) in the other. In Canterbury, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, browse the independent shops of its medieval city centre or visit one of its museums and attractions. Hythe and the bigger seaside town of Folkestone (also nine miles away) are great places for a dip in the sea. You can see exotic animals at Port Lympne Reserve and Howletts Wild Animal Reserve (both within 10 miles) or take a ride on the little trains of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway from Hythe to Dungeness. There are also three vineyards within seven miles of site: Elham Valley Vineyard, Simpsons, and Terlingham, all producing sparkling wines.

Food and drink

There is basic cooking equipment (a hob and a kettle) in the treehouse and a little more space in the galley kitchen which forms part of The Granary so you can make simple meals here. The closest place for supplies is the village shop in Elham (one mile). A little further is Ottinge Court Farm where there’s a milk vending machine and a few other goodies for sale (yoghurts, eggs occasionally other produce) with a fuller selection on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings when the shop is staffed. Elham is surprisingly well served by pubs with three to choose from in its centre: The Abbot’s Fireside, The Rose and Crown and The King’s Arms. There are plenty more in the surrounding countryside too. Both Folkestone and Canterbury have supermarkets and a good range of places to eat. Try The Goods Shed in Canterbury for deli-style shopping and seasonal local produce in interesting menus or Folkestone Harbour Arm for a range of street food eateries with sea views.
