A shepherd’s hut in it’s own riverside field in Cumbria

Rustic, rural, and quiet, the Hut in the Sheepwash stands alone in a field a few miles south of the Lake District National Park. Sleeping two, it’s the perfect place for a romantic retreat in the countryside where you swap TV and WiFi for campfires and conversation. You could come here and spend a few days just enjoying the peace, quiet, and birdsong, or use it as a base for exploring the southern lakes and nearby Ulverston.

You arrive to the Hut in the Sheepwash down quiet country lanes and there’s no fuss on arrival. You simply let yourself in and can’t help but feel at home; the means to make a cup of tea and a homemade treat are all the welcome you need. The hut is perfectly sized for two and its field, edged by a river, is generously sized for many more—but is all yours for your stay. Inside, you have everything you need to self cater in cosy proportions. There’s a double bed, a dinky little log burner, a table and chairs, a kitchenette, and an en suite with an eco loo and shower. It’s off grid but has running water with lights and USB charging thanks to solar power.

Open the windows or step outside for a countryside soundtrack: birdsong, babbling water, and baas from sheep in the nearby fields. It doesn’t get much more idyllic. There’s an off-ground fire pit and places to sit and enjoy the scene. If you can drag yourself away, you can walk on quiet country lanes or drive, in 10 minutes, to nearby Ulverston for a mooch around or simply to pick up supplies. The big draw, perhaps, is the Lake District National Park whose very southern tip is only three miles away. Coniston Water is the closest lake, Lake Windermere is not much further.

Made by Hollow Ash Huts to a very high standard this traditional looking hut has a cosy and comfortable interior and provides comfy holiday accommodation for 2 people. Well insulated with sheep's wool and with solar panels providing lights and sockets for charging phones/laptops. The accommodation is completely self-contained - the kitchen area has 2 gas hobs and grill, sink and cool box and the compact bathroom has a modern eco loo, sink and gas powered shower. There is mains water but no mains electricity. A log burner makes it really cosy on chillier days (logs provided). The hut sleeps 2 in a full sized double bed with bedding and towels provided. * Fully equipped kitchen with pans, utensils and crockery etc for 4 people. * Outside table and seating, BBQ and firepit. * Basic provisions such as tea, coffee, sugar provided and there will be cereals and our free range eggs so you can make breakfast. * On your arrival there will be homemade cake to welcome you. Well behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement.

This beautiful shepherd's hut is set in a tranquil and idyllic riverside field on the edge of the Lake District National Park. Called 'The Sheep Wash', the field is where sheep were gathered and washed in the river in times gone by. Boarded by woods and farmland this is the perfect location for a romantic break or get away from the hectic pace of modern life. No WiFi or TV – just the wildlife to watch and the sound of the river to listen to. Just 3 miles from the small market town of Ulverston and a short drive from Coniston Water this is the perfect base to explore the spectacular Southern and Western Lake District, yet tucked away from the madding crowds of tourists. There are plenty of places to visit, walk or cycle nearby or just sit and relax in your own private field.
Nearby attractions

Hut in the Sheepwash is just over two miles north of the market town of Ulverston on Cumbria’s Furness peninsula. Head into Ulverston to wander its cobbled streets or to visit the Laurel and Hardy Museum (the town was the birthplace of Stan Laurel). There’s a nice walk up to the lighthouse-like Barrow Monument on Hoad Hill, from where there are great views, starting at Ford Park. Ulverston is also the start of the Cumbria Way, a long distance footpath that leads all the way to Carlisle some 73 miles away. While you may not want to tackle it all during a short stay, it makes for a well-signposted route through the surrounding countryside. There are plenty more great walks in the Lake District National Park, of course, including routes up The Old Man of Coniston fell (14 miles away). Coniston Water offers boat hire and boat trips on a Victorian steam yacht. There’s more water-based fun on Windermere, England’s largest lake. Bowness-on-Windermere (16 miles) is where most of the boats launch from. It’s a similar distance to Hawkshead and Windermere village. Ambleside is a couple of miles further.

Food and drink

Head into Ulverston (two miles) to pick up supplies to cook on the campsite or for the closest place to pick up a takeaway or have a meal out. The town has a choice of supermarkets and independent shops including a couple of good butchers. Try the Rose & Crown for good pub grub in a historic surroundings or The Farmers for a more modern atmosphere.
