Tipis in a riverside meadow – all set up for group adventures

If you’ve been left to do the leg work for an activity-filled group weekend away, look no further than Tipi Adventure in the Wye Valley. You’ll sleep in a tipi that’s pitched in a riverside meadow and can launch canoes and kayaks into the water for the half-day paddle to Symonds Yat. There, a waterside pub awaits and, after a rewarding pint, lunch or dinner, you’ll be whisked back to site where you can start your campfire. This is a pretty and relaxed glamping site in a bend of the River Wye near Goodrich. It’s perfect for stag and hen weekends with an outdoorsy edge or for big birthday get-togethers for groups of adventurous friends.

There are 11 traditional-looking but locally-made tipis in the 25-acre meadow at Tipi Adventure, which is situated on a family farm and studded with mature oak trees. Each tipi sleeps up to six and glampers are welcome to book any number to accommodate their group – right up to full campsite bookings. They are kitted out with all the gear you’ll need to cook on the campfire and sleep in comfort; just make sure you bring your own towels. Toilets and showers are centrally located with one of each allocated to each tipi and the single shepherd’s hut that’s also in the meadow.

Adventures from here are provided by outdoor activity specialists, Wye Adventures, and you must book well in advance. Typically, they will drop off kayaks and canoes for your group and set you off down the river. Then they’ll pick you and your vessels up later and drop you back to camp. You could stray from the camp-paddle-camp routine by booking a different Wye Valley adventure but, frankly, why would you? This well-oiled partnership has been delighting groups since 2008 and it’s hard to think of a better or easier way to go on a group adventure in the great outdoors.

From the host
For 2024, we are taking a hiatus from glamping, and offering tent pitches on our beautiful site beside the river. Facilities include toilets, (hot!) showers, running water, phone charging lockers, picnic benches, firepits & fire supplies.
Nearby attractions

You don’t need to go anywhere to start your trip on the river as Wye Adventure will come to you (book well in advance). You can hire kayaks, canoes or paddleboards for self-guided adventures or book an instructed session on the water. They also offer rock climbing and abseiling, gorge scrambling and bushcraft sessions. The site is four miles from both the market town of Ross-on-Wye and the village of Symonds Yat which is scenically situated on the river and a good spot for wildlife watching and climbing. There’s great walking in the area on the Wye Valley Walk which passes both Ross-on-Wye and Symonds Yat. The closest place to join it is at Goodrich, less than two miles from site. The English Heritage-managed Norman castle there is worth a visit if you are interested in history, and visible from the tipis. The Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Company offers tours and tastings three miles from site. There’s cycling (with bikes for hire from Pedalabikeaway), Go Ape and Segway adventures in the Forest of Dean, eight miles from site and clay pigeon shooting 12 miles away at Chessgrove Farm.

Food and drink

Ye Olde Ferrie Inn in Symonds Yat is popular with Tipi Adventure glampers as it is a riverside pub at the end point of a paddle down the river. But if you want to head somewhere on foot, the closest places are in Goodrich (about two miles away). The walk is through woodland and only recommended for day-time walks. There’s a cafe, Hen and Dot, and two pubs, The Hostelrie and The Cross Keys. Ross-on-Wye is the nearest big town, just four miles away, with more places to eat out and shops and supermarkets too. It’s possible to organise supermarket deliveries and takeaways to site. Alternatively, if you want to eat on site but don’t fancy catering for yourself, you might like to book in catering from Devine Food Co.
