A small off-grid site that celebrates Sussex with camping and campfire cooking in the South Downs National Park

If ever a campsite was at home in its surroundings, it’s Woodfire at Chapel Field in East Sussex. This tents-only site is almost cocooned by a fold in the chalky South Downs. It’s so tucked away that, were it not for the occasional wisp of woodsmoke, walkers passing by on the South Downs Way would have no idea it was there. Breathe deeply, however, and you’ll notice more than just woodsmoke. Perhaps the scent of Firle Estate lamb being cooked over the fire or the gentle charring of locally-grown veg. The ethos of Woodfire is to be of the landscape as well as on it and that extends to the food that’s on offer. It’s all sourced from as close to the campsite as possible and cooked, simply, over open flames.

This campsite on the Firle Estate is the second Woodfire location founded by Stella and Griff. Their love of life in the great outdoors has forged a brand that aims to celebrate it. Their first site, Woodfire at Westerlands, over in West Sussex has been a runaway success with national newspapers singing its praises and well-known chefs arriving to cook campfire feasts. Most important, of course, are the five-star reviews from other campers.

It’s a similar set up at Chapel Field, though things are scaled down and more rustic. There are a couple of compost loos, a couple of hot-water showers and open-air washing-up sinks. There’s no glamping here, the site is off grid and it's exclusively for campers with tents. With just 11 pitches in a small meadow there’s a sociable feel — especially if you opt for some of the catered meals. These are a bookable extra and an incredibly good idea. After all, following a post-work, Friday-night arrival, what could be better than someone else cooking dinner while you pitch the tent?

Where you do that is up to you. This is a laid-back, pitch-where-you-please kind of place. Campfires are allowed and, as cars are parked separately, kids can run wild. The outlook is all fields and green with the occasional mature oak tree. The Downs form the backdrop and the steep banks are a popular scramble for kids. For walks, you're spoilt for choice. Head up the steep hill behind and you reach Firle Beacon, with spectacular views to the sea and the South Downs Way leading off east and west. Stay level and you can walk to a recommended tea room, a recommended farm shop or two recommended pubs. You can visit stately Firle Place and artsy Charleston Farmhouse. In fact, you hardly need the car at all. But if you want a day in Lewes or Brighton, or down on the beach, none are too far away.

Canvas tent · Sleeps 6
A solid family canvas tent with zipped-in groundsheet, large windows and two entrances - can comfortably sleep up to 5, with additional space for up to 8 at a push. Prices include parking for one vehicle only (there is a free car park a short drive away), beds, hot water bottles and blankets, cosy bedroom lighting and table and benches. Large and solid, they have plenty of space and headroom and lots of light. They can can easily accommodate a family of up to 5 (although a maximum of 8 can fit at a stretch) and, unlike bell tents, have large windows and two entrances. In fact, we like them so much, we’re living in one all summer ourselves. Duvets and pillows can become a bit damp over a whole season - we think you'll get a much better night's sleep if we provide hot water bottles and blankets, and you bundle your own pillows and duvets into the car to snuggle up in at bedtime.

We are Stella and Griff, and we set up our Woodfire gastro campsites because we love being outside and eating great food! We’ve been going camping ever since we were kids and know what we want from a good site – hopefully, all our experience goes into the little things that make coming to Woodfire great. We were also inspired by visiting 'agriturismi' in Italy - farm stays where you are cooked for at breakfast and supper with produce directly from the farm; and French auberges where everyone sits together in the evening and you are served just whatever is cooking, but you know it will always be delicious. We now have three campsites; in West Sussex we have Woodfire at Westerlands; and in East Sussex on the glorious Firle Estate we have two separate sites: Woodfire at The Round Hill (an exclusive hire field for up to 60 people) and Woodfire at Chapel Field (our regular gastro-camping field). All three sites are hop, skip and jump down the footpath from the South Downs Way and surrounded by hundreds of miles of footpath and cycle path networks in the glorious Sussex countryside. All three sites also have plenty to visit, eat and do if you are travelling on foot or bike, and the Firle sites particularly have the amazing cultural hub of Charleston Farmhouse on their doorstep. Our sites are perfect for all who want to quietly enjoy the glories of the English countryside and we're ideal for families, walkers, cyclists and anyone travelling alone.
Nearby attractions

The stately Firle Place (01273 858307) a 20-minute walk away (just over a mile) and has an amazing art collection, exhibitions and gardens. Charleston Farmhouse (01323 811626), home to the famous Bloomsbury set, is also a short walk away (a mile) and has a fantastic programme of events, courses and exhibitions throughout the summer. Woodfire at Firle is also a couple of fields away from Hunter, Gather, Cook (07921 863768) who run outdoor foraging and wild cooking courses throughout the year. Middle Farm is also within walking distance and has a great farm shop, play area, tearoom and garden nursery as well as animals to meet. The campsite is right on the South Downs Way, so perfect for walkers and cyclists. Slightly further afield and accessible by bus or car are stunning villages, towns and south coast beaches; Lewes is seven miles away, Brighton is 14 miles and Eastbourne is 12 miles from site. For sea swimming, try Cuckmere Haven by Seven Sisters cliffs, where the Cuckmere river meets the sea.

Food and drink

Sustainable, locally-sourced food cooked over flames is a big part of the Woodfire Camping experience. After booking and before your arrival you will be given the opportunity to book in for breakfasts and dinners. In addition to the on-site offerings, The Beanstalk Cottage Tea Garden (07736 351149) is within the estate and just a few minutes down the track from site as is Middle Farm (see above) with its farm shop, tearoom and cider barn for local produce. There are two pubs within walking distance: The Ram Inn (01273 858222) in Firle and the Barley Mow (01323 811033) at Selmeston; both do food and have big beer gardens.
