Shepherd’s huts and wildlish camping on an East Sussex farm

If you fancy the freedom of wild camping but the thought of no shower or toilet for a few days makes your blood run cold, then you may find yourself in a camping quandary. However, here at Hipcamp we think we’ve found the solution in the form of the wonderfully secluded pitches at Wimbles Farm. This campsite in the heart of rural Sussex gives you and whoever you want to camp with an experience that’s close to wild camping. We say “close” because true wild campers would be astounded to find the rustic luxuries provided here. Each pitch has its own compost loo, picnic bench, fire pit and grill. And if that still sounds a step too wild, just book yourself into one of Wimble Farm’s shepherd’s huts for a bed, a log burner and a provided barbecue (among other things).

Wherever you stay, there’s no danger of feeling crammed in on this campsite – despite its convenient location between London and the south coast. That’s because the site’s two shepherd’s huts and five camping pitches are spread out between 20 acres of wildflower meadows. Groups of campers should plump for Meadow Sweet or The Spinney, which each have space for several tents. Families or couples should choose streamside Cherry Tree, pretty Buttercup field or the spacious Pear Tree pitch. Whether you come with one significant other or with four families, you’ll barely know you’ve got neighbours as they’ll be at least 60 metres away; each pitch is exclusively booked. Just like when you’re wild camping, you’ll be expected to leave no trace of your stay and take all your rubbish with you as there are no bins on site. But, in a marked contrast to wild camping, you can have a shower. And better still – it'll be hot. Three rustic tin and timber cubicles are shared by all campers, a short walk away from each pitch.

As for things to see and do, you can start right here on the farm. It’s a rural location with countryside walks nearby but the coast is not far away either. Pevensey Bay offers the closest beach but you’re not far from Eastbourne, Bexhill and Hastings. Historic Battle and quirky Lewes are nearby too with plenty to see and do.

Our small, secluded, quiet campsite offers groups of families or friends the opportunity for secluded camping on huge pitches without neighbours! Set in the beautiful Sussex High Weald AONB each mown pitch has its own compost toilet, Picnic table, fire pit, cooking grid and water heating pan. Showers on site. We pride ourselves that we are different from most sites as every pitch has space and a view of the beautiful surroundings. If you want to be camping with lots of other campers about, then we are not the place for your group.
Nearby attractions

The nearby Cuckoo Trail is a great option for cycling or walks, weaving its way through woods, fields, and the best of the rolling Sussex countryside. Normans Bay, named after the Normans who landed here a thousand years ago, is 25 minutes away; or if its raining pop into The Observatory Science Centre (01323 832731) on selected evenings when you can look through impressive telescopes at events in the night sky. Brighton (45 minutes away) has a fabulous array of activities to keep you busy, whilst a lengthy walk along the South Downs National Park (England’s newest National park) is certainly a must do given its proximity. Lewes (17 miles) is a pretty little market town with great shops, flea markets and a number of decent pubs. Don’t leave without visiting its enchanting castle (01273 486290) built during the days of William the Conqueror, and continuing the history theme just south of the town centre lies the historic Anne of Cleves House (01273 474610).

Food and drink

The recently reopened Brewers Arms (01435 812435) is within easy walking distance and treats visitors to a quintessentially British country pub experience. The menu is eclectic and the food always fresh and (whenever possible) locally sourced. Also within walking distance is the Black Duck (01435 830 636), a 15th Century freehouse, situated in the depths of the East Sussex countryside. The traditional pub grub has gained an excellent reputation so you are strongly advised to book ahead. Classics include: deep-fried Brie in breadcrumbs & cranberry, local pork sausages with mash & onion gravy and pork tenderloin wrapped in Parma ham with mash potato and cider sauce. Visit Hank who runs the local farm shop (again within easy walking distance) for sausages and home-cured bacon that taste delicious on the campfire. There’s also some great little shops and supermarkets in the local market town of Heathfield (4 miles), which also gives the option of takeaways and restaurants.
