Family camping with campfires near Charmouth, with sea views and a couple of quirky glamping lorries

Tucked away along winding, hidden country lanes, Brig’s Farm offers real back-to-nature, wild camping at its simplest. Little more than a beautifully-located field dotted with apple trees and surrounded by woodland, the campsite has stunning southward views over rolling countryside towards the Jurassic coast, just a few miles away.

There are no marked pitches or electrical hook-ups here – you just pick your favourite spot and set up camp. Most people head up to the top of the sloping field, where they can tuck in beside the woodland and enjoy the best of the views.

The latest additions to this 12-acre West Dorset small holding are a couple of antique Bedford lorries, with fitted beds, wood burners and kitchen facilities. One is an ex-army truck with chunky off-road wheels, the other has a huge wooden sun-deck with its very own wood-fired hot tub. Both enjoy the same superb views as the tent campers.

In all, Brig's Farm is a relaxed and informal site, run by the laid-back Mew, who farms the 12-acre small-holding according to organic principals and is building his own eco-friendly house in one corner of the site. The campsite’s eco-footprint is low, with compost toilets and its own running spring water. There’s also a wooden swing and a trampoline for the kids.

Campfires and families are welcome and on Friday nights the brick-built wood-fired pizza oven is fired-up for Mew’s home-made pizza and salad nights. However the real joy of this site is its location, with fantastic footpaths on its doorstep, winding through bucolic landscapes and quiet, hilly country lanes for cyclists to explore. Approaching the site, you feel like you are zig-zagging uphill into the middle-of-nowhere. But it’s actually only a short drive or cycle (though the route back is steeply uphill!) down to the beach at Charmouth where fossil-hunting and swimming on the beach are popular activities.

Grass Pitch
Mew’s Brigs Farm
We LOVED camping at Mew’s beautiful Brigs Farm - views of the countryside and the sea if you manage to pitch at the top of the hill….like we were lucky enough! Mew answered any questions we had super fast and we stayed an extra night as we didn’t want to leave! Kid friendly. Camp Fire wood available to buy. Hot & clean showers. Compost Loos very clean. Excellent coffee and delicious home made treats on a weekend at Mew’s Coffee Shack. Home made Pizza’s available on a Friday night. We will be back for sure. THANKS for having us Mew. Stunning views of sea & countryside
Stunning views & in a great location close to Lyme Regis. Good layout of tents - a meadow is in the centre so you have nobody opposite you or too close. V good, hot & powerful showers. Amazing coffee from the shack. Slight downside is only 3 toilets (all compost ones, but that’s ok) - and for a full campsite it wasn’t very many. Likewise, only one sink in the kitchen area so this got congested. This was also the only hot tap, so nowhere to wash hands other than kitchen. Owner said he’s working on new plans for this but worth knowing prior. Overall we enjoyed our stay, just some little improvements to be made re the facilities. Thank you! 🏕️

Our stay in the Bedford MJ was absolutely beautiful thankyou, it had everything you need and more for our relaxing long weekend. The Amazing views of the countryside and the sound of the birds song added to the laid back atmosphere was very calming and much needed. Thankyou to Mew for his great hospitality and beautiful campsite.

Fantastic! Super location, quiet and peaceful. Excellent value for money. The composting toilets are extremely clean. Showers had excellent water pressure. Good recycling system, and you are able to have fires. Extremely dog friendly. Would definitely rebook and recommend.

From the host
Brigs Farm is a 12 acre small-holding nestled in the hills 2 miles from the Jurassic Coast in the far corner of West Dorset. It is a truly beautiful area full of winding hedge-rowed lanes and public footpaths. Charmouth, famous for its fossils, is only 2 miles away and Lyme Regis is close too. I aim to provide a less formal campsite where well-behaved dogs are welcome and you can enjoy a campfire and sea views. There are compost toilets and free showers. The campsite is for the sole use of tents and small campervans ( VW T series, Transits etc.). I'm afraid I do not allow caravans or motorhomes.
Nearby attractions

Fossil-hunting in nearby Charmouth is a great activity for children and adults alike. Book onto one the fascinating and informative two-hour tours led by the wardens at The Charmouth Heritage Centre on Charmouth beach and you’ll be amazed by what you can find lying around you (adults £7, children £3; 01297 560772).

Food and drink

Wood-fired pizzas are available on site on Fridays (weather permitting) and BBQs, hog roasts and more are available by prior arrangement.

Eating Out:

The fourteenth-century Shave Cross Inn in Shave Cross (01308 868358): it’s got a pretty beer garden, Britain’s oldest thatched skittle alley and good food.

The Tytherleigh Arms  (01460 220214) is the best pub around for food. It’s not cheap but a proper treat. It does a handsome roast (medium rare sirloin is always on) and amazing puds.
