A top-end lakeside cabin with wild swimming, a hot tub and a pizza oven

"The Lakehouse". Just saying it sounds fancy. And this Hipcamp doesn't disappoint. The comfortable cabin in South Devon stretches the very idea of glamping. And that’s not because it has Egyptian cotton sheets and fluffy towels—although it does. It’s because you can wake up with a swim in a private lake, followed by a dip in a wood-fired hot tub. It’s because you can end the day with dinner cooked in your own pizza oven and sip a gin that's made on the farm. And it's because you enjoy the place all to yourselves.

It's the outdoorsy things we love the most: The lakeside setting, the huge deck, the private jetty, rowing boat, pizza oven, fire pit, barbecue, sun loungers, hot tub and more. But you won’t be disappointed with the level of luxury indoors either. Host, Richard, asks his guests not to expect five-star luxury. But, uhhh, it's not exactly back-to-basics. There’s a velveteen sofa, for goodness sake, and twin sinks in the bathroom. There’s a log-burning stove, a Smart TV, and WiFi throughout the place. Okay—so, as Richard points out, there’s no dishwasher but, washing up, whether at the indoor kitchen or your outdoor kitchen, isn't exactly the ultimate deal breaker. And, yes, yes, this is a self-catering stay so you won’t be waited on hand and foot. But Richard is only ever a WhatsApp away if, for example, you run out of wine.

Surrounded by willow trees on the water’s edge, the cabin is extremely secluded. You won’t be disturbed—except, perhaps, by a visiting sheep from the farm or a kingfisher flashing by. And did we mention where this place is located? It hardly seems important as, judging by past guests, you won’t want to set foot off site. But, just in case you do want to know: it’s about a mile from Dartmoor National Park and about the same from the closest pub on the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s just eight miles from Totnes and less than 10 miles from the closest beach. Yup, it's kinda got it all.

A beautiful tranquil getaway on the edge of Dartmoor, perfect for couples, families, and creatives looking for some beautiful space away from the city. A lovely welcome pack is included in the price. The Lake House sits on the edge of Dartmoor, not far from the beautiful town of Totnes and is only 15 minutes from the coast. This stunning log fire heated home is a idyllic place to chill or have a private gathering with a small group of friends. Whether you are musicians looking for song writing time out and bit of a jam, or a couple looking for the ultimate Devon getaway with a difference, this unique abode offers a versatile and private location to escape from the crowd. Please don't expect 5* luxury. Expect all things rustic... Log fires, an outside pizza oven, a gas fired BBQ unrivalled views and the opportunity to simply chill.

The Lakehouse
Super special lakehouse
We had a really fantastic stay, the location is so special and peaceful. We made pizzas in the pizza oven, enjoyed the hot tub, swam in the lake, played cards in the evening. It was so idyllic, I would thoroughly recommend, Richard made our stay really special, going above and beyond with his hospitality. Thank you again for an excellent stay. We would love to come back in the future.

The Lakehouse
A very unique and special place
My wife and I, along with our dog, have just returned from the Lakehouse for our first wedding anniversary. We had planned on using it as a base to visit the surrounding area but loved it so much we hardly left! The setting is absolutely stunning, private and romantic. And our dog loved the freedom of the fields surrounding the house. Sitting on the terrace watching and listening to the wildlife on the lake, or sitting in the hot tub looking out over the surrounding countryside was idyllic. We would definitely stay here again when visiting Devon.

A welcome pack is included in the price. Including our very own craft distilled, Lake House gin. For safety reasons, sadly we can't accept toddlers due to the dangers of the open water. We do not take responsibility for any accidents, please be respectful of the water, you are welcome to swim in the lake but please do not do so if you are under the influence of alcohol. There is a natural wood-fired Hot tub available at a cost of 60 pounds including a bottle of sparkling wine. The Hot tub is filled then emptied after each use then cleaned. Guest access The Lake House is within its own private secluded woodland. Other things to note Being situated on the edge of a Lake it is not suitable for toddlers or non swimmers. Living close to the wildlife you may have unannounced guests such as ducks, sheep or geese on your deck.
Nearby attractions

The Lakehouse is in the Devonshire countryside between the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park and the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there’s plenty of outdoor adventuring on offer including walking, wild swimming and cycling – as well as general sightseeing in this scenic part of the country. But even closer than these surrounding scenic spots, you can occupy yourself on site with the range of activities around the cabin or by booking a tour of your host’s other business, the Lakehouse Gin Distillery. Totnes is eight miles away, home to a weekly market, the remains of a Norman castle and a station on the South Devon Railway which you can ride to Buckfastleigh. The River Dart flows from Totnes towards the sea at Dartmouth (16 miles from site), a good spot for paddleboarding. But you can reach the sea closer to site at Mothecombe or Bigbury-on-sea (both around 11 miles from site).

Food and drink

The closest pub to The Lakehouse is The Avon Inn in Avonwick, about a mile-and-a-half from site, and walkable. It’s a similar distance to The Ship Inn at Ugborough. Turtley Corn Mill, is another pub, less than three miles from site, with a menu of homecooked good food. Richard recommends Venus Cafe at Bigbury-on-Sea (12 miles) for a breakfast with sea views and the Beachhouse in Kingsbridge (13 miles) too. For your own supplies, there’s a Co-op, three miles away in South Brent, and Totnes has a market on Fridays and Saturdays for local produce. It’s about eight miles from site.
