An off grid shepherd’s hut and nearly wild camping in South Devon

You’ll find Bramble Meadow Camping deep in the countryside between Dartmoor and the English Riviera on the South Devon Coast. Although the site’s shepherd’s hut and handful of tent pitches are only three miles off the Devon Expressway, you might wonder if you’re on the right track as you approach down ever-narrowing lanes. But then, between woodland and fields of livestock, a gap in the hedgerow appears and a hand-painted sign on a five-bar gate announces you’ve arrived.

Let yourself in, park your car on the patch of hardstanding and the stress of any journey soon melts away as you enter Bramble Meadow. Home to just one shepherd’s hut and a maximum of four tents pitched at any one time, this place is about as quiet as campsites get – and it’s about as wild as campsites get too. Okay, so the shepherd’s hut is pretty luxurious with its solid roof, double bed, kitchenette and own bathroom but the rest of the site is what you would call back to basics. The only concessions to that are a couple of compost loos and hot water shower, the off-ground fire pits and mown pathways through the grass.

Owner Louise will pop by to make sure everything is running smoothly but other than that you and the handful of other campers (if any are here when you visit) are on your own. It’s the sort of place where picking blackberries, watching the occasional barn owl swooping across the field and cooking on the campfire can occupy whole days. But beyond the field there’s plenty to do.

In the near vicinity, West Ogwell Church (the austere little place you can see from the field) is worth a nose around and Denbury Hill Fort makes for a popular longer walk followed by lunch or dinner at The Union Inn in the friendly village of Denbury. But it’s the middle distance that many will choose this site for: the ten mile radius that takes in the wilds of Dartmoor, the market towns of Newton Abbot and Totnes, and the seaside fun of Torquay, Teignmouth and more.

Site 1 - Almost Wild Grass Camping Pitches
Bramble Meadow is a beautiful and tranquil little spot, perfect for an off grid get away for a couple of nights. Facilities were perfect - nothing more, nothing less than you need. All very clean and well kept. Great to sit by the fire listening to the Owls calling each other across the field - fantastic!

Willow Shepherds Hut
We really enjoyed our stay at Bramble Meadow. The shepherds hut was beautifully decorated and the log burner made it warm and inviting. The location is very peaceful and secluded, ideal for star gazing in front of the fire pit.

Our small Devon campsite is perfectly located between Dartmoor & the sea, not far from Totnes and is an ideal place to get away from it all & explore the Devon countryside. Stay in our handcrafted Shepherds Hut or pitch your tent or small campervan in our peaceful meadow and enjoy evenings under the stars around the fire pit! The Union Inn in the nearby village of Denbury is our local pub, enjoy a pint on the village green or a hearty home cooked meal, walking distance from our site or a short drive. There is so much to see and do in our local area with great walking and cycling routes, two heritage steam railways, lovely beaches, the fantastic moors and tors of Dartmoor, the River Dart plus historic castles and beautiful gardens all nearby. If you want to travel a little further Dartmouth, Salcombe, Tavistock and the Cathedral City of Exeter are all well worth a visit. There are also lots of attractions for families including River Dart Country Park, Paignton Zoo, Woodlands, Crealy Adventure Park, Kents Caverns plus lots more. If you are after something a bit different how about Dartmoor Prison Museum or Finch Foundry, very interesting! We are a peaceful site and ask that noise is kept to a minimum after 10pm for the enjoyment of all of our guests and our wildlife neighbours. Sorry we do not allow dogs or other pets on our site.
Nearby attractions

It’s worth taking a little stroll to look at the tiny 13th-century West Ogwell Church which neighbours the campsite and, for a longer walk, head to Denbury Down, the site of an ancient hill fort. There’s a good walking route from the village of Denbury (which handily starts and finishes at the local pub) or you can head there straight from site. The campsite is three miles south of Dartmoor where there’s more walking, wild swimming and outdoor activity and it’s four miles from the market town of Newton Abbot. Totnes, Teignmouth, Babbacombe and Torquay and the rest of the English Riviera are about 10 miles away and packed with things to do from the seaside fun of crabbing to traditional train rides and heritage sites.

Nearby attractions

The closest pub is the 14th-century Union Inn in Denbury, about two miles from site - check opening times before you head there – especially if walking. The walk takes about 20 minutes along country lanes and footpaths through fields. It serves food and has a pretty location on the village square. It also sells a few basics which campers might find useful. Don’t miss Denbury Milk Station at Fairfield Farm in the village for milk fresh from the farm (via a vending machine). There’s usually also some fresh produce (eggs, fruit and vegetables) for sale too. There’s a small Co-op on the outskirts of Newton Abbot (about a 10-minute drive away) and plenty more shops, supermarkets and eateries in the town itself.
