A secret, secluded campsite with wonderful views down to Start Bay

The only clue to this campsite’s existence is a hand-branded ‘camping’ sign nestled in a flowerbed. The site, which originally had no name and was known by locals simply as ‘the one run by Beryl’, has now been officially christened Beryl’s by the campers themselves. The friendly lady in question describes the secretive site, hidden at the end of a tunnel of trees in Beeson village, as her ‘unconventional camping haven’. Charming eccentricity is certainly apparent here, not only in the laissez-faire attitude to publicity, but also in the quirky names of the 29 pitches, such as ‘Panoramic’ and ‘Snug’.

The ‘haven’ part of Beryl’s description is equally apt for this lush little site, nestled as it is on a hill in the woods with a glorious view of Start Bay. Venture down the narrow access road and you’re rewarded with a real sanctuary from which to explore the surrounding delights of the Devon coast. You can spy on birds from the hide looking over the local nature reserve’s lake, watch sailing boats silently move across the bay, or take a walk around Slapton Ley lagoon just over the hill. The South West Coast Path is also easily reached, passing the award-winning beach at Beesands, just below the campsite.

What a gem!
We loved it! Beautiful setting, walkable distance to the beach and near the Devon coastline walk paths. The campsite was spacious and clean. Will definitely be going back!

Garlands 1 Grass Pitch
Great camping, large spaces, easy going, nice area and seaview. Only downside is the 20pence per minute shower.

Camper van - sea view & 20p coins
This is a great spot. Beautiful valley with snatched views of the sea. The pitch is flat and electric available. Now for what you really want to know.. the new toilet block is good and clean. The old shower block and wash area is ok but there are two hold your breath portaloos, don’t go there unless you’re a hardcore festival veteran. Ok the really annoying bit is the showers operate using 20p pieces for each minute! Who on earth uses 20p change in the age of Apple Pay etc?? Please just put the price of the pitch up a couple of quid and remove the need for this kind of ridiculous shower charge. It is just stupid. All that being said, it is worth a return visit.. I just need to start busking for loose change!

From the host
Beryl's is situated in the heart of South Devon surrounded by beaches and rolling hills. It is a beautiful, rustic site, with pitches which are spread out and each have their own individuality, whether you like views, shade, morning or evening sun. We are tent, campervan and trailer tent friendly, but unfortunately we do not accept motorhomes or caravans. There are showers, toilets, fridge freezers and washing up facilities plus a few hook ups if required. There is plenty do to offsite and numerous pubs / cafes to suit every taste all within a few miles.
Nearby attractions
Surrounded by beaches, both shingle and sandy, nearest being Beesands a 5-10 minute walk. If you like to explore there are several smaller quiet coves, please ask the owner for recommendations. We are located on the South West Coast path, plus there are plenty of other beautiful country walks and we are only half an hour from Dartmoor. Wanting a day away form the beach, the local towns of Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Totnes and Dartmouth are all within half an hours drive, and for the kids/big kids theres Woodlands Theme Park (01803 712598), great option incase the weather gets a bit grey! The almost Mediterranean-like Blackpool Sands bay and its secret gardens are well worth a visit.
Food and drink
In Beesands there is the Cricket Inn (01548 580215), famous for its Seafood Pancake, and Britannia @ The Beach (01548 581168), who have a small ‘shack’ restaurant and a takeaway hatch. If you like cake, every Sunday St Andrews Church in Beesands sells drinks and cake (all home made). Over the hill in Torcross there is the Startbay Inn (01548 580553) renowned for its seafood dishes, and the Boat House (01548 580747), which serves excellent pizzas and more.
