Travelling from site to site in a bow-top gypsy caravan, through Cumbria's stunning scenery

To experience the romance of life on the road, head for the quiet byways of Cumbria with Wanderlusts Gypsy Caravans. Choose from one of two private, stationary camps or opt for a horse-drawn holiday where you move from place to place in the tranquil Eden Valley. Either way, these off grid holidays are, surely, the most authentic way to experience the old traditions of a nomadic lifestyle in peaceful countryside between the Lake District and the North Pennines.

These bow-top gypsy caravans are hosted by Barny Maurice, who understands the draw of the open road very well. He ran away to the circus at the age of 16 and lived that life for 20 years before starting Wanderlusts more than a decade ago. If you opt for a horse-drawn holiday, you’ll spend time learning the ropes and reigns from him as you trundle down country lanes. The creek of wooden wagon wheels, the breeze in your hair, and the ever-changing country backdrop make the experience Barny offers something quite different to your average 'glamping' trip. He’ll help you set up camp at each travelling day’s destination then leave you and the horses to rest and enjoy the location for 24 hours before getting back on the road.

Opt for one of the encampments back at the Wanderlusts HQ and the experience is a little different. You’ll be left more or less to your own devices with a gypsy wagon or two to sleep in, a fire pit, a compost loo, and a secluded location by a beck. Choose Blackthorn for a rustic sauna in the mix; choose Bluebell to sleep up to eight. There’s a stream-fed wood-fired hot tub available as an add on too.

Whether you choose to go out on the road or to stay in one place, there’s no option but to slow down. As your phone runs out of battery, while you filter your water, and as you wait for dinner to cook on your campfire, you’ll connect better with nature, your surroundings and the past and, perhaps, whoever you’ve come with too.

Wanderlusts Horse Drawn Holiday

Quirky · Sleeps 12
Trundle along quiet country lanes in a traditional horse drawn gypsy caravan before camping up at one of our secluded camps where you can cook over an open fire, maybe paddle in the streams and immerse yourselves in nature and the great outdoors, before nestling up for the night in the cosy gypsy wagon. Wanderlusts gypsy caravan holidays are a unique way to enjoy an adventure holiday. Travel in a traditional horse drawn bow top gypsy caravan (vardo). If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay with an adventure along the way, to be surrounded by the peaceful and charming countryside of Cumbria and slow down to the easy pace of our gentle giants. A gypsy caravan is a great way to spend a family holiday, to escape as a couple or enjoy the experience with friends. It’s been proven as a great option for hen parties as well. There are 5 people included in the price - this is 2 adults MAX and three children because of sleeping arrangements. We can take extra people (up to 7 more) but they will need to bring a tent to sleep in or rent one of our other camps. You'll meet us at one of our beautiful and secluded private camps, usually at Maughamby Farm, Glassonby, or Penrith where you can leave and forget about your car for a few days. You may have the opportunity to take the reigns and drive the horse and wagon along quiet country roads, after some instructions but we’ll always be near to hand so no need for any experience or worries. We take you from one beautiful camp to the next. We set you up with a fire and all you need before leaving you for a night or two to enjoy your privacy, nature and adventure holiday, before returning to yoke up the horse and wagon and trundle on to the next camp. On the road, there may be the possibility to buy seasonal produce, from eggs to cakes to home made jams! Though this depends entirely on availability. We suggest looking up some recipes for cooking over an open fire before you come as it is usually such a pleasure to eat by the fire what you have cooked on the fire… About Our Camps: We have specifically chosen our camps in wildflower meadows, and private fields with streams flowing fresh from the hills. You can choose to stay at a camp in a static gypsy caravan or enjoy the horse drawn travel from camp to camp each day. This is a truly magical way to spend your holiday and memories will last a lifetime. Hawthorne Hollow “Hawthorne Hollow” is an old farmers quarry, from where they would have taken stone of which the dry stone walls surrounding the fields around here are built. Quarries such as this were once the traditional stopping places for Romany travellers and itinerant workers who would camp here whilst doing seasonal work on surrounding farms and such like. A small stream meanders its way by the camp, ideal for paddling and collecting water for washing. Here you can relax by the fire and watch the lively bird life in the trees, or perhaps see a deer or badger. There is a compost loo . There are some lovely walks from each stop. Barny & Bob The idea of this experience is to enjoy things at a slower pace and enjoy the peace of the countryside. Customers require a certain level of fitness as on hills may be asked to walk. You also may need to carry and refill the water container, and gathering firewood is all part of the experience, although some will be provided. We can provide roadside and fireside meals on request, please ask. There will be an out door fire pit for cooking at each camp, with a canvas canopy to protect against showers. Some firewood will be provided although customers are encouraged to forage for sticks themselves. We will also be happy to show anyone inexperienced with fire how to get started, you should be prepared to get your hands a little dirty. We’ll also instruct them how to look after horses ,e.g. brushing and watering etc.. Please travel light and keep in mind the horse will be pulling you, the wagon and luggage! The Gypsy Caravan is mostly made of wood, lined on the inside with a warm and regal fabric, then a layer of felted wool insulation and covered in traditional canvas, the wood work has quite a lot of carving, not only for beauty, but this also reduces the weight dramatically, which makes a big difference to the horses when pulling!! double bed (with bedding), plus sleeping mats for children (or adults )for which we ask you to bring sleeping bags/bedding. You'll have a gas hob, kettle, fry pan, pots, cups, plates, cutlery, wash bowl, cupboards, bay window and stable door. Water container. towels not provided. For anyone unsure about fires, I’ll be happy to give help. Lighting: a wind up torch, candles, 12v lights Washing up: a washing up bowl, water heated on fire. Shower - There will be a wash bowl to have what we called on the circus “a dry shower” or flannel wash..(flannels not provided..). Water can be heated on the fire or gas, or you can do as I do when travelling and have a soap free wash down in the stream!! Toilet facilities: a compost or outside loo is never far from camp Drinking water is provided Bed linen provided for double, we ask you to bring childrens bedding, but if this is tricky because of how you’re getting here, just ask and we'll sort something out

Wanderlusts offer the only roaming Horse-drawn Gypsy Caravan Holidays in Cumbria, as well as now offering two totally off-grid retreats: The Bluebell Camp and The Blackthorn Camp. All set in beautiful locations in and around Cumbria’s Eden Valley, a secret gem of tranquility, linking the Lake District National Park with the North Pennines “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty“. We are a small family business living and working completely off grid! With over twenty years experience of making, restoring and travelling thousands of miles on the highways and byways of both Britain and France in traditional horse drawn caravans, Barny combined his skills and experiences to create Wanderlusts Retreats and Adventures. What we are offering is a totally unique experience, the chance to touch upon a childhood dream! To be transported slowly and gently to the romantic ideals behind stories such as ‘The Wind in the Willows’ and ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ and so many more…. A big part of ‘our place’ is on the road.
Nearby attractions

If you’re on a horse-drawn holiday, what’s nearby is ever changing but as you’re in the Eden Valley, there are typically riverside and countryside walks. Ask Barny about what’s near each day’s camping spot. If you stay at The Blackthorn or The Bluebell Camp you’ll be at Wanderlust’s Nutwood headquarters near Melmerby. From here there are lovely walks in to the surrounding countryside. A popular place to wander is to see the stone circle, Long Meg and Her Daughters, four miles away, and Lacy’s Caves, a mile or so further on. The River Eden also provides beautiful riverside walks in the area and there’s Melmerby Fell if you want a walk with views. This is the edge of the North Pennines so there’s plenty more of that to the east while, to the west, it’s only about 15 miles to the edge of the Lake District National Park. Penrith is the closest town, about nine miles away.

Food and drink

Wanderlusts Gypsy Caravans’ base in Melmerby where you’ll be based or will set off from is just a mile from the village centre. There’s The Village Bakery, which offers a small shop and tea room, and The Shepherd’s Inn pub. Other pubs nearby include The Fox Inn at Ousby (two miles) and The Crown and The Featherston Arms in Kirkoswald (five miles). Kirkoswald is also a good place to head for if you want supplies for your own cooking as it has a good community shop. For more than what’s on offer there head to Penrith (nine miles) or Alston (11 miles). Both have a good range of shops.
