Cottage Orné sits high on a hillside looking down the Bride Valley in the Dorset National Landscape, just a few miles inland from the Jurassic Coast. Perhaps most striking in the view from the deck of this little cabin though, is “the big house” on whose estate it sits. Belmont House is a fascinating country pile surrounded by 180 acres which you are welcome to explore. It’s home to cows, sheep and chickens who you’re likely to meet when you stay. It’s also home to your host, Evie, who, like this stylish and self-contained little cabin, is welcoming and lovely.
The cabin has everything a couple or a family of four could want for a few days away including the kitchen sink – and a dishwasher too. It’s a compact little space offering open-plan living but it really packs it in. There’s a king-sized bed that’s theatrically framed by curtains, a sofa bed and a cool mezzanine double in the eaves, that your kids are going to love. There’s a table and chairs, a well-stocked kitchenette and an en suite shower room and loo. It’s self catering – studio style that’s well connected to the outdoors. If the sun is shining during your stay, you’re bound to spend a lot of time on the deck outside the front door. There’s an off-ground fire pit which doubles as a barbecue and a place to toast marshmallows, as well as those lovely views.
Evie is often on hand to explain the surprisingly short history of her family’s home at Belmont House or to take you to meet the animals who live on the estate’s farm. If she’s not around you’re welcome to wander. Off site, Dorset’s coast and countryside are both tempting to investigate. Burton Bradstock is the closest place to swim or sunbathe, at one end of Chesil Beach, and there are plenty more within an easy drive. The estate is also between Dorchester and Bridport, both worth a look around and handy if you need supplies for cooking at your lovely little cabin.
