A stylishly simple and secluded cabin for two in the Wye Valley

This sleek cabin, with a huge window and an outdoor bath offering views of the Wye Valley, is a great place for a modern off-grid getaway. Situated in a field, far from anywhere and anyone, on a hillside dairy farm, it’s the ideal place for couples and world-weary urbanites to escape to. It’s stylish, well equipped and self contained but deliberately minimalistic so the focus remains on what’s beyond the window: the great outdoors. And as this is the Wye Valley, it really is rather great, with plenty of walking, wild swimming and canoeing on offer.

The farm has a full mile of river flowing through it and its own private pebble beach, so you don’t have to go far to find adventure. During the winter, you’ll share this secret little spot with no one but the farming family who’ve been herding their cows here for 100 years. Come the summer and there may be a few others. White House Farm, you see, has form for hosting glamping guests. They have a handful of tipis pitched up for summer in another part of the farm (see 'White House Glamping', also on Hipcamp). The bonus for guests at the Hideaway, apart from a chance to say hello, is that a programme of on-site activities and facilities have been developed over the years. Fancy a massage, a yoga session or a lesson in wild swimming? It’s yours. Want to hire a paddleboard or canoe? They're right here too. And if you’d like to learn more about life on the farm, join farmer Will for a tour.

Back at your cabin, however, it’s just you and whoever you’ve come with – if you’ve come with anyone at all. This really is a place to retreat to, which will suit solo guests as well as couples. With solar power, a log burner, a little kitchenette, a shower and loo, it has everything you need to be comfortable but not enough to distract you from that view.

"White House Hidedaway" in Herefordshire. Stay in cosy log cabins in with an outdoor hot tubs and scenic views of the Wye Valley. A perfect spot for couples to relax in privacy. You can snuggle up next to the wood burner, toast marshmallows on the wood burner or take a warm relaxing bath in the outdoor tub. The cabins are based on a small farm. You'll have access to the river Wye which flows through the farm and where you'll find a pebble beach. There are also plenty of walks nearby, with the Wye Valley Walk passing close by. If you're looking for a bit more adventure, there are many activities that you can book such as foraging, paddbleboarding, canoeing, farm tour and wild swimming lessons. The cabins are off-grid but fully kitted out with a kitchen, warm showers and everything you might need to enjoy a peaceful getaway.
Nearby attractions

You may simply be content to stay at your White House Hideaway, enjoying the views and the solitude – and, perhaps, booking in a treatment with the site’s recommended massage therapist. There are, in fact, quite a lot of bookable activities here from farm tours to wild swimming sessions with a qualified instructor. You can hire canoes or paddleboards or, if you’re new to either, have a guided lesson with an expert. There's also yoga, foraging, pizza making and more – which you can find out about from your hosts once you've booked your stay. This is the Wye Valley and there are also plenty of adventures on foot including the Wye Valley Walk which wends its way close by and along the river towards Ross-on-Wye. If you don’t fancy the hike, you can reach this lovely market town in the car (six miles by road). The cathedral city of Hereford is in the other direction, just over 10 miles away. For mountain biking, head for the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre and rental company Pedal A Bike Away, 20 miles away.

Food and drink

The Whitehouse Hideaway is out in the sticks so there's nothing quite on the doorstep, but a four or five mile drive in various directions provides all of the following options. The nearest pub is the New Harp in Hoarwithy, closely followed by the Moody Cow in the opposite direction. The Crown Inn at Woolhope is especially recommended by Richard at White House Farm. And, for a great Sunday roast (among other things), try The Cottage of Content at Carey. If you’re visiting Hereford (10 miles away) and fancy a decent meal out, perhaps try the modern British fare on offer at The Book Shop. There are, of course, plenty of places to pick up supplies for cooking at the cabin in Hereford too – but the closest place to site for general goods is Fownhope village where there is a decent butchers and corner shop.
