Easily accessed camping on a 15-acre farm, with family facilities and a vast amount of wild space to explore
A mile or so north of Helman Tor in Cornwall, home to a 6,000 year old Neolithic hill fort, we’ve discovered a more 21st–century attraction: Mena Farm Campsite. In fact, like the diagrammatic history of man, from walking on knuckles to standing tall and strong, Mena Farm is a place that showcases the full evolution of camping kind. In the lower field – open in the height of summer when long blonde grass ripples in the breeze – there’s the most primitive stage. Wild campers pitch their tents in the fauna, foregoing electricity, while, in the main camping area above, family tents and campervans park up on the more formal electric spaces. Then there are hard-standings for caravans, near to free WiFi at reception and the well-equipped, rainy-day games barn. And, finally, there is the fully-evolved glamping accommodation; boutique bell tents kitted out with double beds, kitchen wares and all the kit and caboodle you could need. If it all sounds like a rather crowded affair then you’d be very much mistaken. With some 15 acres of space on offer, Mena Farm specialises in the lower-key side of camping life, with vast tracts of land set aside for wildlife and a lilly-spattered lake hidden in the trees. Badgers bed down in their sets, hares are occasionally seen in the long grass, and wild flowers – pink campion, daisies and wild poppies – pepper the surrounding fields. Regardless of whether you pitch a tent in the wild camping meadow or wiggle a campervan down the final lane from the A30 (less than a mile away), all visitors have full access to the excellent clutch of facilities. There are two clean shower blocks, a well-stocked reception shop and bikes available for hire, while children will love the wooden fort that’s part of the small playground. Lending a hand collecting eggs and petting Del Boy and Rodney, the two friendly (and playfully named) kune kune pigs is also a must. Yet for all the farm space to laze about on and extra treats, like fish'n'chip delivery direct to the campsite, the real joy of camping here is not the site itself but the surroundings. Walk the footpaths south to Helman Tor, now part of a 500-acre nature reserve, and pick up the best parts of the Saints Way walking trail. Or take the campsite bikes for a family cycle along the Camel Trail, a breath-taking route on a former railway line. Or simply hop in the car and drive to the north or south Cornwall coasts, equidistant (at around 20 minutes) from the campsite. Which to choose? Flip a coin? Roll a dice? Rock, paper, scissors? Evolution can only get you so far.

Clover the Bell Tent
Great location
The Belle tent at Mena was great, well stocked and comfortable. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. It is well located and allowed us a base for lots of fun activities across Cornwall. Our neighbours (the pigs) were good neighbours and really LOVED the apples we gave them, and the views sitting outside the tent at night were amazing.

Bluebell the Bell Tent
Wonderful place!
Wonderful place! More than we could have hoped for. Loved the van serving cocktails, waffles and curry on Thursday evening. Impressed by the delivery of Fish and chips to our tent on Friday (gluten free as well!) We only stayed a few nights but came away feeling like we’d stayed a full week - so refreshed. The whole family loved it.

We have just returned from a weeks stay camping at Mena Farm. It’s such a lovely site with excellent facilities that are beautifully kept. We arrived and were seen and shown to our pitch straight away. Super friendly owners who were always on hand if you needed anything and always having a lovely conversation when passing. They took a real genuine interest in where we had been and what we had done that day. Also super kind and lovely to our 5 year old too, remembering the kids names on site to make them feel welcome, lovely touch. Even when full the site didn’t feel cramped as great size pitches. We will definitely be back in the future. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We stayed in one of the lotus bell tents for a long weekend and absolutely loved our stay. We had a warm welcome and were fondly greeted throughout our stay. The location is great for exploring almost all of Cornwall and we enjoyed visiting some of the local areas as well as a little further afield. The site is a lovely size with a family atmosphere, especially during the summer while we were there. The pop up food options were a great addition, something we haven't seen before, and we really enjoyed the waffles and pizza! The toilet and shower facilities were also well stocked and clean throughout our stay. The tent itself was a great little space. It came with everything we needed to sleep, cook and enjoy our food. We forgot to bring washing up things with us but Ali was great at helping us out with those. The bell tents are right by the entrance to the site which means anyone coming and going drives past although this wasn't a problem for us and people were polite and considerate if they did need to stop to open the gate. Love the site, facilities and tent and would love to come back one day!

Oak the Lotus Belle Tent
Staying in Oak lotus tent was a real treat- everything you needed for cooking, relaxing and the shower facilities were always clean. Perfect location to explore Cornwall and relatively easy to find. Friendly welcome, fond farewell. Definitely will be back! Only downside was that it is advertised as being in the “adult only” section of the campsite which appealed to my partner, however the plot next to us was not, and kids often playing directly in front of our tent therefore I would argue that it was not “adult only”.

Nearby attractions
Mena Farm Campsite isn't far from Bodmin Moor and there are plenty of fantastic walking trails directly from the campsite. The farm is also near the halfway point of the Saints Way (Padstow–Fowey), a well-signed (with Celtic cross markers) 27-mile route that takes you through Little Petherick, St Breock Downs and Lanivet before joining the Fowey River near Lostwithiel for a lovely waterside stretch. Rent bikes from the campsite to speed things along and try the Camel Trail (a spectacularly converted old railway route 3 miles from the campsite) or pedal around Cardinham Woods, 5 miles away and particularly excellent in spring. It's 3 miles to National Trust-owned Lanhydrock House (01208 265950), an imposing example of a Victorian country estate, rebuilt in the 1880s following a devastating fire, where there are children’s activities, garden tours and open-air theatre in summer. It's 6 miles to the world famous Eden Project (01726 811911). The coast, meanwhile, both north and south, is around 20 minutes in the car (approx. 10 miles). Charlestown beach is the closest in the south, while Wadebridge, at the start of the Camel Estuary, offers a gateway to the north coast.
Food and drink
Walk or drive the 1½ miles into the village of Lanivet, home to the award-winning inn (01208 831212) as well as the excellent Welcome Stranger fish and chip restaurant (01208 831583). If you don't even want to stretch your legs that far, there is a twice-weekly fish and chip delivery to the site, plus weekly visits by local food and drinks vans and, of course, the fully-licensed shop has you well covered for alfresco drinks around the campfire. For a proper shopping trip, Bodmin boasts Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets, as well as petrol stations, further eateries and a hospital. It also has one of the best tourist information centres in the county.
