A small, friendly riverside campsite in Cambridgeshire – with campfires allowed

In the flat Cambridgeshire fenland, Four Winds Camping and Canoeing offers spacious pitches with campfires allowed in a riverside setting. You can launch a canoe, kayak or paddleboard from the campsite’s two private moorings and paddle a mile or so down river to the market town of March. Alternatively, head out into the countryside to see the wildlife and scenery that makes this part of the world so special.

The scenery, the wildlife, the river and the pretty town within walking, cycling or paddling distance are all part of why this place is almost universally adored by everyone who visits. But it’s the friendly feel of the place that secures it so many glowing reviews. Owners Debs and Hannah make running the place look effortless, all while tending to the needs of campers at a level not often seen on such a small site.

There is a small onsite reception/shop that sells snacks, ice cream, cold drinks, logs and kindling and coffees.  There’s no cafe but book a breakfast box for a freshly-cooked, locally-sourced sausages, bacon and eggs (or plant-based alternatives).

Friday-nights are wood fired pizza nights which means you don’t have to cook on night one when you’re busy trying to pitch your tent. On this small site it’ll be one of 12; split between tents, motorhomes, caravans and campervans. All are welcome here – along with up to two dogs.

The riverside setting means you can stay right here to fish or launch straight into the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding, canoeing or kayaking. Bring your own or hire a canoe, kayak or pedalo on site. Peaceful pastimes are the thing in the fens and there’s a footpath along the river and easy cycling on quiet, flat roads too. There’s birdwatching at nature reserves and wetland sites within half an hour’s drive and it’s a similar distance to Peterborough, where you can board a steam train, and Ely, where the cathedral is the big attraction.

Site 19 - Grass Pitch
Such a lovely site. Very tranquil. We biked along the river into town which takes around 15 minutes. The facilities are clean and the kiosk/shop is a real bonus. The private launch straight onto the river was amazing for paddleboarding. We can't wait to come back.

Fantastic Weekend Getaway
We had a brilliant weekend at Fourwinds Campsite in March, PE15. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome. The site is well-maintained, peaceful, and has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere—perfect for unwinding and enjoying nature. A special shoutout goes to Andy, the site warden, who was incredibly helpful and welcoming throughout our stay. He went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, and his local knowledge and friendly nature really added a personal touch to the experience. The pitches were spacious and well laid out, with plenty of room for our tent and gear. Facilities were spotless and regularly cleaned, with excellent showers and toilets. It’s clear the owners take great pride in the site, and it really shows. One of the highlights for us was the beautiful setting—surrounded by open countryside and just a short walk from the river. It’s a great spot for families, couples, or anyone looking for a quiet escape. The location is also ideal for exploring the Fens and nearby attractions. We’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a relaxing and enjoyable camping experience in Cambridgeshire!

Repeat visitors, will return again!
A another perfect stay. Went to Four Winds last year for the Easter weekend. And again this year. Both years the weather has been a challenge. But the warm welcome, fantastic service, and amazing facilities make up for any rainy weather. Had pizza on Friday night, highly recommend you do the same. Please visit Four Winds, you will not regret your stay.

I imagine this beautiful spot is busy during the late spring and summer months. Dog friendly too. But I was around this time for quiet and calm visiting the area in general and Four Winds was the right place for it!

Campfires, open space, canoes and big open skies. Four winds opened in 2012, keen to offer guests nostalgic, comfortable camping and activity experiences. Our mission has always been to give our guests what we would want from a break in the country and for them to leave us relaxed and happy. If its camping we want our guests to have space to breathe, room for the children to run and play, camp fires, friendly helpful staff, wide open spaces and hear laughter in the air. The river has been a wonderful bonus, giving our guests lots to do, whether wild swimming, canoeing, pedalo, paddle boarding or fishing. Each party needs to have a minimum of one adult in their group (over 18 years of age). We have two toilets and two showers Check in between 1pm and 8pm. Check out by 11am
Nearby attractions

The River Nene runs along one side of the camping field (fenced with a coded gate) and Four Winds Camping has two moorings from which you can fish (if you have your own rod and licence) and launch paddleboards, kayaks and canoes. Campers are welcome to bring their own or to hire a Canadian-style canoe or single-person kayak from site. Be sure to reserve these in advance by calling 01354 658737. The flat fenland is perfect for cycling and a public footpath runs along the river bank and provides a scenic route into the market town of March (about a mile and a half away) or further out into the fenland. March has shops, pubs and eateries as well as a couple of little museums: the small free-to-enter town museum and Fossils Galore, which charges a small entry fee. The North London Skydiving Centre is about three miles away and, if you don’t fancy it yourself, you can sometimes spot people making the jump from site. You can hop aboard the steam trains of the Nene Valley Railway in Peterborough (11 miles away), visit the mighty Ely Cathedral (20 miles away) or even head to Cambridge for punting and sightseeing (30 miles away). There’s also good birdwatching at RSPB Ouse Washes and Welney Wetland Centre, both around 15 miles from Four Winds Camping.

Food and drink

Campers are well catered for at Four Winds Campsite with an on-demand shop open for snacks, drinks, ice cream, coffees and campfire basics from 8am–8pm. You can also order a cooked breakfast or join a Friday-night barbecue, both made using ingredients from a nearby farm. Hannah and Debs can point you to the award-winning butcher’s shop they use in Market Deeping should you wish to stock up on stuff for your own barbecue. Otherwise, the closest pubs and shops are in March, just a mile-and-a-half away, with more options in Ely. If you’re walking or paddling into March, you might like to try the riverside pub The Acre (01354 656735) for a bite to eat or The Ship, which has its own moorings, for a drink. The Oliver Twist in Guyhirn, four miles away, is popular for Sunday roasts.
