Child-free tipi glamping in a well-located Norfolk meadow

A lifetime of outdoor adventure and travel around the world have inspired Camp Mela where the canvas and poles of six tipis rise from a two-acre Norfolk meadow. This adults-only site has been carefully crafted and curated by Maddie and her partner Nick who’ve put down roots at Salle Moor Farm near Reepham. And while the tipis and campfire tales nod to distant cultures there’s something earthy and organic here too. In addition to the tipis, Salle Moor soil supports an ancient oak which offers shade to summer campers and, nearby, a host of independent businesses including a veg box scheme and a craft ale brewery in a 500-year-old barn.

You’ll find Camp Mela and its age-old oak tree, past the farm buildings and in a lush meadow beyond, where the collection of six traditional Sioux tipis are spread around. Five are beautifully furnished as bedrooms for guests with double beds, rugs, coffee tables and rustic touches to help you feel at home. The sixth is the largest of the lot; towering 11 metres tall and offering a cathedral-like space for socialising in style with sofas, sheepskin rugs and authentic Indian throws. Each tipi is traditionally built and a real work of fine craft: see the long wooden poles, the short staves stitching the circular doorway in place and the fitted cotton tipi liners for added warmth and insulation. Stepping inside there’s a magnificent sense of height and airiness – the perfect space for summer in a hay meadow.

The ambience of Camp Mela is undeniably chilled out. Campfires are very much encouraged – with a firepit and seating outside each tipi – and there’s a separate campfire cooking area for all, with a tripod, grill and hanging skillet. This, alongside the giant tipi and communal kitchen wagon, creates a great social point for guests and is a fantastic place for groups to convene. The kitchen wagon is worth a shout-out here. Crafted largely with reclaimed wood, it's beautifully rustic while having lots of mod cons you might otherwise miss. While the tipis are all blissfully electricity free, there are places here to charge your phone and the facilities to cook and make cups of tea and coffee quickly. And it's not just any coffee but the fresh ground beans from the Norfolk Coffee Co who operate from site.

It’s a 15–20-minute walk to Salle’s church and village green and around the same in the opposite direction into the market town of Reepham, where the main square has a clutch of great places to eat and a market every Wednesday morning. On the way into Reepham you’ll cross the Marriott’s Way, a 25-mile car-free trail that runs between Norwich and Aylsham, another nearby market town. It’s a fantastic route for cyclists to follow in either direction, for a day out in Norwich or for a visit to the beautiful, National Trust-owned Blickling Estate. Further afield, but not far, the North Norfolk Coast at Cromer and the peaceful Norfolk Broads offer days out you won't want to miss, both around a half-hour drive away.

Who needs Sri Lanka anyway?
Our honeymoon was canceled at the last minute, so we decided to take a long weekend and stumbled upon Camp Mela. When we arrived we were greeted with Maddie's beaming smile and positivity. She went through everything and seemed over the moon to be hosting us. The teepees were amazing, our biggest worry was that the temperature would be freezing at night and boiling through the day, but they were wonderful throughout. The facilities were more than we expected, everything was clean and well equipped. There was plenty of room in the fridges for our BBQ food (and a co-op around the corner if you need more!) A compostable toilet was a nice alternative to the horrible chemical ones you sometimes get at campsites. BUT the main star was the open-air shower which was incredible! There was a communal cooking fire in the center and every tent had its own, smaller fire to watch the sun go down next to. Honestly, I can say it was wonderful from start to finish. As a place to meditate and disconnect from the world, it was perfect to watch the sunset sent with a bottle of wine as the embers flickered. Somehow as we watched the horses in the next field play in the dusk each night, all the heartbreak of our lost honeymoon evaporated. It was the perfect break. R&C

My partner and I stayed at the Camp Mela for 2 nights a few weeks back and were absolutely blown away. We were blessed with gorgeous weather and were lucky enough to have the whole site to ourselves! Maddie & Nick were truly excellent hosts and even offered to assist us in building our campfire! It’s such a magical space and I really would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Can’t wait to visit again in the future.

MAHKA luxury Tipi
Just spent 3 lovely days at the tipis! The tipis themselves were well equipped and clean and spacious. There was a lovely fire pit for us to enjoy and the outside shower was such a lovely addition. This really was a very blissful few days only wish we could’ve stayed longer!

We woke early to the sound of birdsong and made bacon sarnies in the nicely equipped kitchen. We loved the freedom of the open-air shower before heading off to explore the area - beautiful countryside with walks (and pubs) in all directions. We used the kitchen again in the evening before lighting the fire pit and watching the sun go down. The tipi was perfect - spacious, with a wooden floor, comfortable bed and huge warm duvet. Little solar lights came on at night so that we weren’t in total darkness. As the fire dimmed and the sun disappeared below the horizon, we heard the first owl-calls - wonderful. A perfect break - totally chilled.

Never tried Glamping before and really enjoyed it. The Tepee was spacious enough. The bed/mattress was hard (but fine for me). All the facilities were accessible, kitchen, utensils were handy and the outdoor shower was great. However the compost toilets not entirely my thing but it does fit with the experience / nature. The grass was quite high onsite i.e. around the tepees which wasn't always great/pleasant i.e. table and chairs, but manageable.. Location wise, it was 20/30mins drive from costal walks and beaches which was great. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend it for a break away / weekend if you love being with mother nature.

The site is everything you would want and could hope from a weekend tipi experience. Maddie and Nick have done an incredible job at making the site an ideal location for a weekend (or more) gateway to experience Norfolk. The site itself is perfectly catered with the kitchen, showers and toilets. The tipis are VERY comfortable and the main tipi + fire pit are great spots to hang out. Thank you again for a wonderful time - we will be back !

Nearby attractions

Camp Mela has a quintessentially Norfolk setting, surrounded by magnificent countryside and villages but also within striking distance of a good market town. Right from your tipi the area is fantastic for walking (ample footpaths with good access) and there's a magnificent church in Salle, just across the fields, striking for its size given the tiny village – it was funded by several local lords, including the Boleyn family. For cycling, The Marriotts Way Heritage Trail is just down the lane (less than a mile away) and offers a car-free route all the way into Norwich or, in the opposite direction, to the market town of Aylsham where National Trust-owned Blickling Hall has extensive grounds, gardens and a lake to roam around, as well as going into the 17th-century stately home itself. Aylsham isn't the nearest town, however. It takes less than half an hour to walk from Camp Mela into the central market square of Reepham, where there's a choice of restaurants and cafés (see Food & Drink) and independent shops, including the excellent Flower Folk Florist (01603 879555) and the Koti Store, a shop dedicated to helping reduce single use plastics. The site is less than half an hour's drive from the beautiful beaches of the North Norfolk Coast and about the same distance from the Norfolk Broads.

Food and drink

Camp Mela isn't the only business set on Salle Moor Farm. The barns around the farmhouse, a short walk away, are also home to the All Day Brewing Company (01603 327656), a small-time brewers utilising their 20-acre organic orchard and specialising in wild and mixed fermentations. They also ferment a range of foods for the kitchen and serve up freshly made vegetarian and vegan food, including wood fired, sourdough pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings (beers and ales available Tuesday–Saturday). The farm also hosts a vegetable box scheme, Salle Moor Market Garden (01603 879046), so organic seasonal vegetables and mixed salad leaves can be purchased right on your doorstep.

Elsewhere, The Crown (01603 870964) in Reepham is the nearest pub (about a mile away) and there are more in town: The Kings Arm's (01603 870345), a 17th-century coaching inn, serves good food and has live jazz in the courtyard some evenings, while Georgian country house, Dial House (01603 879900) is the one for fine dining. Both are on the main square, where there's also a good butcher's and, just off the square, V's café (01603 879300), which offers something more quick and casual during the day. Three miles in the opposite direction, it takes around 10 minutes to drive to beautiful and historic Heydon, where The Earle Arms pub (01263 587376) and a local tearoom (01263 587211) both have a good view of the church, the green and generally pretty surroundings of the tiny hamlet.
