A rustic dog-friendly glamping site on the edge of Dartmoor

There’s something enchanting about glamping site Acorn Farm, which sits in the very middle of Devon. It might be the free-range pigs, chicken and sheep, it might be the tucked-away valley setting or the mix of meadows and woodland. Or it might just be the fact that it’s on a ley line that connects Cornwall with Glastonbury. There’s also the accommodation itself. The site is home to two off-grid, private encampments. There’s a bell tent for two in its own three-acre field, and a handbuilt tipi, sleeping up to six, in another. Both are charming hideaways on a farm that’s a five-minute walk from a pub, less than five miles from Dartmoor and midway between Devon’s north and south coasts.

The location makes Acorn Farm a great base from which to explore all of Devon and a great place to stop off on journey’s further into the West Country too. Those ley lines are not just energetic connections but handy geographical ones as well. And whether you’re here for a couple of night’s stopover or a week’s holiday, you’ll find it easy to settle in. Host Chris meets you in the farmyard and, depending on the weather, either leads you down or takes you in his Landy to your chosen spot. You won’t need much to stay here because Chris has thought of just about everything.

A torch, a towel and something for your tea – that’s just about all you’ll need. Your shelter has been pre-made, the beds have linen and the logs are waiting to be chopped. Each encampment has a camp kitchen and its own shower and compost loo. Holly Bush, which is just for two, is a four-metre bell tent bedroom with a tarp-covered camp kitchen. Pixie Woods, meanwhile, is a tipi built by Chris, with a camp kitchen in a pseudo-shepherd’s hut outside. Both are enchanting places to stay.

Quirky · Sleeps 6
Pixie Woods is a huge home made Tipi which has 6 comfortable beds, a lounge area and a small internal firepit. Set in it's own 4 acre field. Outside there is a shepherd hut kitchen area. This contains – table and chairs, twin gas hob, all the pots, pans, kettle, cutlery, mugs, glasses, cool box. Salt n pepper, cooking oil, tea and coffee, sugar. Fire starter kit. An outside fire pit with a BBQ tripod and free logs. We also leave a bottle of wine, cheese and some crisps as a welcome gift. Walk into the woods and you will find your own private shower hut with hot mains water. There is also a large sink for washing up. There is another separate hut which is your own compost toilet. A short 5 minute walk up the fields will take you to the front door of the pub. (Which is very good)

(toilet rolls and reading books provided) Our lovely village Spreyton has a wonderful pub just a ten minute walk away. There is also a very well stocked village shop, a good sports field with a football pitch, tennis courts and a kids area. There are lots of good walks locally and we are on the edge of the Dartmoor National park.

We have a small mixed farm of 45 acres, with sheep, miniature pigs, chicken and dogs. The farm has five pockets of mature woodland with grass meadows in between. Our guests can use the whole of the farm and come and meet the animals. If the weather is good our guests can drive right up to their tents but i do have a Land Rover should anyone need it. There is, in the middle of our farm - a Pagan Tree circle which dates back to before the village church was built. It is also the center point of Devon and is on the main lay-line from Cornwall to Glastonbury. Our village has a fabulous pub, The Tom Cobley and there is also a very good village shop. We also welcome children and dogs
Nearby attractions

Beyond the farm boundaries, you can walk out into the undulating countryside on local footpaths or drive a short distance to reach Dartmoor National Park. The park boundary is less than four miles to the south. Within it, there’s plenty of opportunity for wild swimming, walking, horse riding and more. One of the most popular places to explore, Castle Drogo and the Teign Gorge, are just eight miles away. The castle was the last to be built in England, between 1911 and 1930, and is open to visitors thanks to the National Trust. It stands above the Teign Gorge where you can enjoy a riverside, woodland walk. Another National Trust site, Finch Foundry, is five miles from site and Lydford Gorge, with its 30-metre waterfall, is 20 miles away (about half an hour in the car). The market town of Okehampton (nine miles) is a nice place to spend an afternoon with shops, eateries, a museum and the remains of the second oldest Norman castle in the country. If you want a day at the beach you can head north or south. It’s about an hour’s drive to either coast – Bude on the north coast of Cornwall is just over 30 miles. Paignton, on Devon’s south coast, is about the same.

Food and drink

Acorn Farm is a five-minute walk from the centre of the village of Spreyton. There’s a community-run village shop which is well stocked and a pub, The Tom Cobley, too. Both are half a mile from the site. Farmer Luxton’s Farm Shop (nine miles) is another good place to stock up on local produce and has a cafe which does recommended breakfasts too. For more than that Okehampton is just beyond with independent eateries, shops and supermarkets.
