There is a gentle spirit throughout these beautiful 80 acres of evergreen forests and pastures. My aunt and uncle bought it in 1947 from the first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who came to the U.S. in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. Paolo left his wife, Felicita, and their three children behind; they were to follow within the year. In the country outside of Ferndale, California, he purchased the property, one mile from the ocean, and built a Tyrolean-style house, a chicken house (with a grappa still under the main floor), an outhouse, a corral, and a barn. He purchased 7 cows. And then, it was August 1914, and the War to End All Wars broke out in Europe. Felicita and the children, living in a village on the Austrian border, were interned in a prison camp in Austria with the rest of the village's residents. The Gabriellis' young daughter died there. Six years passed before Felicita, Virgil and Louis were able to join Paolo in America. In 1938, Virgil--Fr. Gino--became the first Ferndale boy to serve Mass in his home town church. Felicita died in 1940, and Paolo closed the dairy and moved into Ferndale to live with Louis and his family. In 2014, we invited to lunch all the people who had been children in the 1920s and '30s, and who had come to this ranch after Sunday Mass to gather with other Italian families for polenta, wine, and music. They came with photographs and maps and Mass cards and diaries, and shared their memories of a childhood in this place that still loved them.

Amazing property with great hosts
John and Wendy are great hosts and have an amazing property that is walking distance from the ocean. Sites are well spaced and warm showers were nice. Warm bread was great and Wendy made the best cobbler. Kids love it all. Will definitely visit this camp again.

My dogs & I loved it! Will return!
Wow! I highly recommend this HipCamp! Wendy and Co. were so welcoming and friendly. From start to finish I had everything I needed for a comfortable camping stay. Super clean and well equipped showers/bathrooms, dishwashing stations and camp spots. I stayed at the spot by the creek, which was wonderfully tucked back, but still just a quick walk to the shower house. My camp spot had more than what I needed, it was great. I had firewood, a lighter and fire starters. The camp host even gave me pointers on starting a fire 🔥 (I was struggling) and I was able to be successful the rest of my trip! Teach a gal to fish, eh?? Love it! The site had a large camp table and chairs and was surrounded by trees and foliage. The area is beautiful. Amazing proximity to the beach (you can see it from their driveway!!) and redwoods. I opted for baguettes, coffee one morning and soup and bread one evening. DONT MISS OUT on this treat! Delicious! Fresh jam, butter, half n half etc. Just a perfect treat for camping. I would return here time and again. I loved it, my 2 dogs loved it. Couldn’t have asked for a better location, accommodations, comfortable camping, and hospitality. Don’t forget to give Louie the camp dog a scritch on the head, he’s the #1 good boy.

Peaceful tent camp setting
We loved staying at Orchard Park. The setting was beautiful and peaceful. They have important conveniences like a table and chairs, fire ring and wood, close water, a toasty warm bathroom and laundry machines. We also really enjoyed Ferndale. Thanks for the hospitality!

I was looking for a place close to Humboldt Redwoods, and while this seemed a bit off course, it turned out to be a gem. Close to the ocean and some short secluded hikes at the north edge of Lost Coast. My site was stocked with firewood which was honestly so lovely. I brought my wrong propane canister by mistake, and Wendy & John offered me some morning coffee and boiling water in a thermos. All the sites are visible to each other, but seemed far enough away to limit noise and all had a good sky view for stargazing!

Beautiful campsite
We loved this beautiful site to camp. The fire pit was great with wood provided and table and chairs too. We had the entire place to ourselves. It was also wonderful to take a shower and the bathrooms were clean and a nice reprieve from our van.

Wow!! Beautiful open space. Perfect spot to relax, let the pup run free with the camp dog, Louie. John and Wendy were perfect hosts. We opted for the additional goodies - soup, bread, and cobbler. Enjoyed meal sitting in Orchard with great firepit and plenty of firewood. The private bathroom and laundry was a bonus too! We went into town for shopping and lunch and great hike at Russ trail. Also beach walk was 1 mile walk down the road. Highly recommend!

Orchard Campsite
We enjoyed our stay with Wendy and John. The site is a perfect base for exploring the Giant Redwoods. Previous reviews praising the hosts are spot on. A warm welcome greeted us and we were directed to park our 99 Eurovan Camper in the orchard close to the property bathroom/shower.laundry area. There is a meadow beyong the orchard that offers additional camping locations and has another bathroom/shower building. Firewood galore is supplied at each camping site. Such a peaceful location and a short 20 minute walk away from the beach. The charming town of Ferndale was nearby with stores to keep our supplies refreshed. We did take advantage of John's bread and Wendy's soup for a very tasty dinner one night during our trip.

AMAZING! Book here for fun!
Delightful/full of fun. Labor Day wkend/heat wave. We went from 112 degrees to 62-72 deg., heaven! Spotless clean, GREEN, fresh, organized, simple, private, welcoming, and safe. There is a very large field with a lovely tall forest surrounding the campsites. Limited campsites, you are not camping on top of each other. Field is perfect for kids and off-leash dogs to run and play. There are trees to climb, a creek to play in, forest to explore and find banana slugs, birds singing, space. NO noise, no traffic noise, no sirens, no people being rude, no partiers. Very few pesky flies or mosquitos there were moths flying around dusk-time but birds made dinner of them. We were provided firewood for our fire pit and had a great campfire! Having a campfire is a big part of the camping experience. We had foster children with us that had never been camping, and never been in the forest. We were provided a table and chairs. Other campers had kids, they played hide and seek, tag, ball, soccer – no electronics! Camping is close to the beach. We visited Sequoia Zoo in Eureka went on the Redwood Sky Walk through the redwood trees! The hosts were very nice, non-intrusive, but welcoming. We were allowed to stroll through their garden, take photos, and Wendy came out to give a few stories about items in her garden. The bathrooms were clean and the shower water ran hot! There was an outdoor sink set up for washing dishes. We loved our stay and will be back!

Hugely recommend staying here. As you drive through a quaint town and down this lovely road passing a beautiful house that has a zebra you will see two roads one that leads to a beautiful beach and the other to an adorable house. Inside that adorable house is two of the sweetest people I have ever met and lovely dog. You will first be greeted by Louie who will lead you to the front door. Wendy is the most adorable lady you want to adopt as your grandmother. HIGHLY recommend getting the cobbler and baguettes (or any other accommodations). Their campsite is very beautiful, private, clean, and so homey. 20/10 will be visiting again!!!

Fantastic stay! Large meadow surrounded by tall trees. We got there and were warmly greeted by the hosts and their dog, Louie. Picked up some eggs and were directed to our site which was already stocked with firewood and a firestarter for the fire pit. Also a table and chairs. 1.5 bathrooms - super clean and much nicer than I was expecting. Didn’t plan to shower there but ended up doing so because it was clean and there was hot water. The individual sites are spread out nicely so there is privacy. It can get foggy/lots of moisture at night so be sure you have your rainfly up if tent camping. Our dog had the best time and so did we. We also felt safe leaving our tent set up and driving into town one of the days which was adorable. You can’t miss out on exploring Main St. You’re also less than a 5 min drive to the ocean and less than 10 min to the Lost Coast Headlands- great hiking with amazing coastal views. At the campsite you can hear the ocean at night and some moo’ing cows from nearby farms. 11/10- can’t wait to come back.

Great place with easy access to downtown Ferndale which makes this spot unique. Plenty of space for your tent(s), only small issue is the bathroom is far from some of the sites.

A corner of heaven with kind hosts
We enjoyed a wonderful two-night stay camping at Wendy and John's beautiful property. Their warm hospitality was apparent from the first moments of check-in. The directions were clear and easy. Louie the dog showed us around when we explored the grounds near the house, and the banana slugs were friendly. The little bathroom and shower house, with outdoor sink providing fresh spring water to refill our containers was an easy walk across the field. These luxurious camping amenities are augmented by the option to really be spoiled by having fresh baguettes &/or coffee brought to your campsite in the morning. John brought us the delicious warm bread in a basket with butter and jam, knife and spoon. What a treat! Being able to unplug and listen to the ocean and the birds for a couple of nights made this one of the most restorative weekends I can remember. And it seems that one can access the internet, if that's what you need to do. I highly recommend this place for a joyful experience. Serene and beautiful at the edge of the King's Range and the Pacific Ocean, with Sitka spruce, fir, redwoods, ferns, sun, stars, and fog. A corner of heaven.

Big tent, big bed, quiet, beautiful
Just a gal and her pup
I loved everything about this camp. The location was absolutely perfect. Only 1 mile from Centerville beach, just miles from beautiful Lost Coast hiking trails down to the ocean shore and within 5 miles of downtown Ferndale and Russ Park. The campgrounds were beautifully green and well maintained, and the sites were spaced out far from each other. Bathrooms with hot showers-amazing!! Free fire wood and starter-amazing!! Not having to worry about my tent or cott made me feel absolutely spoiled at the base camp. Truly enjoyed this trip the most out of all Ferndale travels prior due to this camping experience. Thank you!

Cute and cozy
The initial reason for a hipcamp near Ferndale was just to save money on hotel, since there are no state camps anywhere near. It was still pricey, but much cheaper than staying in Ferndale. Plus it was right in between the main street and the beach. When I pulled up, I was amazed at how cute the property was. Wendy and John were super welcoming, they showed me to my spot which was near the lush foresty area. There was aleady a stack of firewood, plus a lighter and starter cubes. Nice little set of plastic chairs and a table. The bathroom was very clean, and was nice to be able to use an actual flush toilet. It was very quiet, and at night I could hear the ocean. As I walked around the property I noticed there's a creek on another camp spot and a long road through very dense forest leading to the rest of the property. The back area of my campsite was very secluded and a great spot to put up my hammock. I would definitely come back to use this hipcamp again.

Got to sleep under the apple trees! Ocean was a few minutes away by car but great hiking trails just beyond that. Very quiet--there were two other groups out in the field, but way out. Firewood and fire starter provided which was great. Private shower and bathroom were a plus as well.

Amazing spot for camping
Exceptional spot! Wendy and John were wonderful hosts. The area was so beautiful and peaceful. Each camp area was positioned to be private (there’s 3 camp sites total). We drove our camper van right up to the site which was right by the creek and surrounded by trees. Nice open grassy field in the middle was perfect for stargazing. John brought over firewood for us so we had a nice campfire and there were table and chairs for us to use as well. It was so convenient having a bathroom and shower available. We even ordered their homemade cobbler with caramel sauce and it was so good, might be the best we’ve ever had! Had a delicious homemade baguette and coffee the next morning :) Wendy and John’s spot is close to the historical town of Ferndale which is always fun to explore (we visit often). Beautiful hiking spots and good food nearby. Best Hipcamp spot we’ve been to with wonderful, thoughtful hosts! Highly recommend. We will be back!

The place is serene and beautiful! Super friendly host! I forgot to bring my phone charger and they have plenty of outlet for us to use, they have Wi-Fi! Bonus add on is the free firewood! I wish we had a longer stay. One small note, during one of the night we got rain on even the weather broadcast cloudy, but given it is close to the ocean, some fog and drizzle is enough to dampen our tent, so do bring the right gear when camping near the coast! Thanks Jon and Wendy again!
