AMAZING STAY
What an amazing and beautiful spot. Robert met us upon arrival and was absolutely THE BEST. He was a wealth of knowledge about the area and certainly knows his stuff when it comes to rocks and rock hounding. He told us the best places to look for rocks and encouraged our exploring of his land. He has goats, a donkey, lamas and lots of other amazing animals you are allowed to go see and interact with. Robert greeted us with and smile and was super friendly. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay. His tents are Very well kept and the land surround it was as well. You can tell he really enjoys this and puts a lot of thought and heart in to his guests and his land.

Lovely road trip stop
The bed was very comfortable and included a fitted sheet. The tent stayed fairly warm overnight. We only stayed one night during a road trip and got in fairly late, but Bob was so kind and met us upon arrival and led us to the site without issue.

Lots for kids to explore for days!
So much fun waking up with Riley the donkey and llamas walking around your tent site! I can't say enough good things about Robert as a host. He was responsive to my many questions about what was available at the site and what wasn't before we got there. He met us at the site to show us around and how to work the toilet and hand pumps for water. He's obviously an adored grandfather as seen by his sweet and respectful interactions with our 9 and 5 year old boys. We came during the summer when the streams weren't running close by but Robert encouraged the boys to find "frog country" along the creek beds where the boys and ourselves had a delightful time exploring/catching/recatchings little frogs. There was an old boat on the hill that the boys explored and pretended they were pirates. The animals were definitely a highlight of the stay, and getting to pet the goats and donkey were adventure enough for us! Robert also gave detailed instructions on where to go gold panning and tubing. Unfortunately there weren't enough days to do all the exploring possible. The air got bad due to fires and we packed up early to go home. A disappointing abrupt end to our adventure, though nothing we weren't prepared for the possibility of. We will be back perhaps in cooling days when the creek is running too, to collect more peacock feathers, and play on the tire swing.

Weather is super hot
It was almost 120 F when we visited, crazy hot. The night view is awesome, Wiley and goats are cute and friendly

Rustic, peaceful, nature, serene.
Robert was very hospitable and helpful. This is a very rustic outdoor experience and we loved it!!! If you love the outdoors and a little roughen it then this is perfect. Animals and clear star filled sky is a bonus. Perfect quiet get away from the loud city chaos... will be back again!

During the 3day weekend, we had a situation that made us not to make it to the campsite. Despite We informed Robert in the last minute, he was able to change our dates to accommodate us on another day. His communication was very quick and efficient and we can not wait to visit his farm next time!

Got to meet the friendliest donkey!
Had a really wonderful stay at Trank Family Farm. The host, Bob, was wonderful and made me feel very comfortable and welcome. Even when I accidentally let his donkey Riley escape! Riley, along with the goats, is super sweet and friendly and was a highlight of my trip. It was also cool to see the llamas and walk through the walking paths. No potty (no big deal, I picked up one at Walmart), but plenty of water and even electricity! The nearby town of Palermo is quite charming. Just be warned, the last mile of road to the campsite is gravel and quite bumpy! My non-4WD vehicle made it, but it was a little rattling (both literally and figuratively). Would recommend this site to anyone seeking a peaceful getaway.

Best farm animals ever
Bob and his farm animals were just a delight! Went camping on his land with three kids and their reaction to his farm was that it was “epic“. Thanks saying a lot! Our toddler doesn’t say the word ‘epic’ but is still talking about goats, llamas, peacocks, and all the neighboring farm animals. As a parent, any time your kids can run free and be in nature you not only get a break from certain parenting tasks, your rewarded with the feeling your helping them to learn valuable life lessons, which is what I felt during our stay. The animals are just fun to be around... made me feel like a kid again. Only thoughts toward those not used to farm life and nature would be that the area can get hot, so if you go in the summer, plan to spend the day at the lake and enjoy the farm mornings and evenings. Also be aware that it’s a real farm, meaning animals get fed, work must be done, animals are curious, etc. That’s exactly what we loved about our trip, but if your looking for solitude, ‘no one in sight’ kind of a trip, then maybe not the right location for you. Two other canvas tent sites at the back of the property would be better for that. Thank you Bob for opening your land to us and sharing your little slice of paradise!

Incredible place, highly recommend!
This was top of this list of places I’ve stayed since joining Hipcamp! The property and accommodations were absolutely perfect for a weekend getaway, and the darling llamas and sweet donkey Riley were icing on the cake. Bob was a gracious host and provided helpful information about the property and surrounding area. A must do if you’re planning a trip to the Oroville area!

Nice getaway under the stars
Very much enjoyed the stay! Worth noting that the road gets a little bumpy, but totally drivable with care even in a small sedan, and we were advised of the road conditions. The tent was great, Bob happily explained all the setup and instructions for using equipment. The donkey and goats were friendly, the tent furnace worked great. Would recommend for those looking for a nice getaway!

We were a couple rookie campers looking for a trip where we can test the waters. This site exactly offered us that, a tent(w/ bed and furnace), a propane stove along with basic utensils , and a minimal toilet setup. If you are looking for a close-to-nature camping experience, this is a suitable option.
Besides the stay, this site offers a campfire spot, a farm to explore, few animals to interact, and a host who is super friendly and helpful. My favorite experience was my interaction with Llamas and with Riley (the donkey). Also, I would recommend reserving the hammock, especially in summers.

TRANK FAMILY FARM / GOLD CAMPSITE 1
We camped during the height of the fire and smoky days so our experience was tinted by events beyond our control but Bob the host communicated with me constantly about the smoke situation and let me decide on my own whether or not I would keep the reservation. His friendliness is felt thru out our trip even though he really just leave his guests to roam freely and enjoy all of his farm animals and the vast farmland. My 3 yo daughter really enjoyed meeting and feeding Raley the Donkey and would constantly ask to see Riley and all the other animals. The campsite was a bit hard to get too that will require a 2 miles drive on private dirt road and you are very near to the huge PGE tower and a dirt road which was a bit disappoinment to me since you hear the cars quiet clearly and the electrical lines doesn’t make you feel like you are out in the "wild". Overall, we still enjoyed camping here becuase the site has everything yet you have to "work" to enjoy it like gathering your own firewood, bumping water, and explore to experience the rustic and historical beauty of this family land. The fire stove in the canvas tent is amazing and Bob is constantly improving this site to make the stay of guests more comfortable 😀

The land is beautiful, as pictured. I wish we had been a bit more mentally prepared for the bathroom situation, which is a trash bag connected to a toilet seat inside a small tent structure (that doesn't close) right next to one of the sleeping tent setups... we ended up planning trips into town around bathroom needs! The last couple miles of the road are rougher to drive than we expected, rocky and near thorns that may mess up your car, but doable. We just wished that we had a heads up on those things -- otherwise it's a nice spot!
