A pair of charming self-contained shepherd’s huts on Exmoor – with hot tubs and views

Escape to Exmoor with a stay in a secluded shepherd’s hut on the North Quarme Estate. This private estate of wooded valleys, streams, and abundant wildlife is situated deep within the national park. There are just two shepherd’s huts here, each offering self-catering stays with plenty of outdoor space, not to mention far-reaching views and a Swedish hot tub. The location near the village of Wheddon Cross is a good one for exploring the park and the north coast of both Somerset and neighbouring Devon.

The rather chipper names of the shepherd’s huts at The Exmoor Woodland Escape (The Happy Hare and The Pleasant Pheasant) are perfectly fitting for a place that brings much joy to its guests – evidenced by the ever-growing list of positive reviews. There are few who could fail to be won over by the neat mix of outdoor living and inner cosiness which has been put together with much attention to detail.

The huts are tucked away and separated from each other by 400 metres of woodland. Each has its own garden space with a private hot tub, a fire pit, plenty of logs, a picnic bench and comfortable loungers. Inside, both are well-equipped living spaces with kitchenettes, log burners and seating but The Pleasant Pheasant has the edge on luxury. A few extra pounds per night gives you a kingsized (as opposed to a double) bed and an en-suite shower and loo, while guests at The Happy Hare will have to hop a few steps outside to their private bathroom hut.

Wheddon Cross, just over two miles away, has a small shop, a pub and a reputation for abundant snowdrops – making early springtime as good a time to visit as summer. From the village, you can walk through Snowdrop Valley and up to Dunkery Beacon for yet more fabulous views. It’s Exmoor and Somerset’s highest peak at 519 metres so you might just spot some of the other places you’d like to explore from up there.

The Pleasant Pheasant on Exmoor
Loved it - secluded, really peaceful, great accommodation which was spotlessly clean, and lovely touches such as fresh flowers on the table and the hot tub heated up ready to go! We will definitely be returning!

The Pleasant Pheasant on Exmoor
A beautiful stay in a lovely setting, we didn’t see or hear the second hut. Very easy to find, we stayed to celebrate our first anniversary and we would definitely like to return. We especially enjoyed the wood fired hot tub which was really easy to use

Wedding anniversary retreat!
What an amazing time we had at the Pleasant Pheasant. The hut has everything you need to switch off and enjoy some relaxation in the countryside. The surrounding areas are also beautiful, we had great fun exploring and would happily return to the PP.

The Happy Hare on Exmoor
Perfect week away
What a gorgeous place. It’s just beautiful- so secluded and quiet, but not far away from popular sites at all. We even got home from a day out to find a load of deer just grazing in front of the hut! The hut was really clean, beautifully presented and perfect for a relaxing week away. We would definitely stay again and would recommend it to anyone! Thanks so much Alison!

From the host
There is much to see and do in the local area and this is the perfect base to explore this stunning area of Exmoor and Somerset. Guests can walk through Snowdrop Valley up to the summit of Dunkery Beacon, where the views are mesmerising. The local village of Wheddon Cross is 2.5 miles away and has a local shop and pub, and is most renowned for its displays of little white flowers in February each year. Visit the medieval town of Dunster with its variety of shops, cafes and castle. Other points of interest include the West Somerset Steam Railway, Valley of the Rocks and Lynton and Lynmouth with the iconic water-powered cliff railway. Whatever you do, you’ll long to return to your hut, where you can truly relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Nearby attractions

The shepherd’s huts at Exmoor Woodland Escape are within Exmoor National Park so there’s plenty of walking, cycling and horse riding in the area. A recommended local route is to walk through Snowdrop Valley (the flowers are in bloom in very early spring) and up Dunkery Hill. The medieval village of Dunster is eight miles away and the coast is just a little further with the seaside resort of Minehead and the pebble beach at quieter Porlock, both just eight miles from site. Further afield, but not far, are Lynton, Lynmouth and the Valley of the Rocks (about 20 miles). The surfy, sandy beaches of the north Devon coastline at Croyde and Woolacombe are around an hour’s drive from here.

Food and drink

The Exmoor Woodland Escape is situated on the North Quarme Estate, about two-and-a-half miles from the village of Wheddon Cross where there’s a pub, The Rest and Be Thankful Inn and a grocery shop at the local garage. Four miles away in Bridgetown, The Badger’s Holt is another pub that’s good for dinners out (it opens evenings only) while Dunster and Dulverton, both around 15 minutes’ drive from the site, have plenty of options for breakfast, lunch or dinner out.
