A seven-pitch campsite on a farm with views of the Preseli Hills and Pembrokeshire coast

“It’s camping like it’s meant to be,” says Edward, the man behind Coedfryn Farm. “Or at least camping like I think it’s meant to be, anyway,” he adds. Luckily, we agree. It’s camping in a field, on a farm with simple facilities and campfires allowed. But there are a few big bonuses to this back-to-basics set up. There are the little things that proper campers will appreciate, such as a picnic bench at each pitch and complimentary firewood for your stay. And then there are the bigger things: the mountains, the sea, and the night-time stars that light up this location in the Pembrokeshire National Park.

A ten-minute drive from the nearest beach at Newport, between Fishguard and Cardigan, is where you’ll find Coedfryn Farm. The difference between here and some of the more commercial campsites on the coast is immediately apparent when you realise there’s just seven pitches in a nine-acre field. That’s more than spacious; it’s vast. Admittedly, pitches are not spread among this expansive grassland evenly but, instead, are sensibly spaced at the sheltered end, near the farm’s wooded edges. Tent campers make up the still-tiny majority here, with six out of seven pitches for canvas and just one allocated for campervans or touring caravans. All are off grid.

Each pitch has a stone-circled fire pit with a barbecue grill, a picnic bench and a little sheltered kitchen stand that's good for protecting your camping stove flame in wet or windy weather. There are a couple of showers, open-air washing up sinks, and flushing loos that are allocated one per pitch. Kids will love the farm animals in the surrounding paddocks and fields: alpacas and their little friends – a Shetland pony, pygmy goats and molly lambs.

The view is all green with Mynydd Carningli, a 1,000-foot mountain at the edge of the Preselis, as a constant backdrop. But where’s that sea we promised? Walk to the higher end of the field, and look west for that. There are a couple of extra picnic benches and fire pits here, making it a great spot to watch the sun set and to remember that the Pembrokeshire coast and its walking, wildlife, watersports and world-class beaches are just a few miles away.

Coedfryn Farm is a small farm site, perfectly located between the picturesque town of Newport and the Market town town of Cardigan. Both with an array of quirky little shops, cafes, restaurants and sandy beaches. All pitches have their own flushing toilet, dining area and firepit with firewood supplied. Steaming hot showers are  located in between the pitches   There is a central kitchen area with a freezer for ice blocks, fridge with plenty of space and washing up facilities. There is even a washing machine if necessary. For when the weather is less fair, there is a large barn packed with toys with lots of space for eating under cover and food preparation. There is a gas large BBQ if required.

We enjoyed our stay here and the huge barn with ride on toys was an added bonus for the rainy days especially with the 2 and 8 year olds. Friendly hosts and great facilities, would definitely recommend a stay here. Really handy having the picnic table, as we didn't have space to bring a table and chairs and the firepit with logs every day was brilliant for toasting marshmallows and stargazing. Thank you Hugo and family!

Hugo’s campsite was fantastic. Only 7 pitches really spread out with their own fire pit, bench and cooking area. Great for nature and fantastic views from the top of the field. Lovely animals on the farm and facilities for children. The hosts were really friendly and accommodating.

Friendly, secluded farm site
Beautiful, peaceful farm site with plenty of thoughtful details. Pitches well-spaced along one side of a very large field, backed by trees. Climb to the top of the field (picnic table provided) for lovely views. Each pitch consists of a large mown area with its own picnic table, firepit (free firewood provided), useful cooking area (roofed and raised off the ground), own allocated toilet, and allocated shower (shared with one other pitch methinks). Washing up area with use of fridge/freezer (always useful). Great for children as there's an outdoor play area, plus a huge barn with ride-on tractors, etc (also doubles up as a sheltered area for wet weather). Also there's quite a few animals to enjoy ... several alpacas, plus a pony, goats, sheep, and cats. Very friendly site. Not far from Newport and Cardigan for shopping. Lovely walks and beaches.

Great facilities and loads of space. Each pitch has its own fire pit, covered storage area and toilet. Showers, drinking water and fridge all nearby. Very peaceful, a really friendly family run place just a short drive to a great little town and beach.

Starlight camping hidden in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Coedfryn Farm is a small farm site, perfectly located between the picturesque town of Newport and the Market town town of Cardigan. Both with an array of quirky little shops, cafes, restaurants and sandy beaches. All pitches have their own flushing toilet, dining area and firepit with firewood supplied. There is even a washing machine if necessary. For when the weather is less fair, there is a large barn packed with toys with lots of space for eating under cover and food preparation. There is a gas large BBQ if required. The local beaches, which are a plenty, start about 5 minutes drive away and nearby activities are plentiful with Dolphin tours, Coasteering, Sea Kayaking, Horse Riding and more all within 20 minutes drive. You’ll have some friendly neighbours to get acquainted with during your stay in the form of alpacas, a couple of molly lambs, some pygmy goats and a little shetland pony! You’ll be surrounded by hills, mountains, wooded valleys and streams, so it’s a real walkers and cyclists paradise, and there’s a public footpath running through the site which links to the village of Nevern (10 minutes walk), where there’s a picturesque 16th century inn serving great beer and hearty meals.
Nearby attractions

The farm has a little menagerie of friendly animals including alpacas, pygmy goats and a miniature Shetland pony. It’s on the edge of the Preseli Hills and within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with all the outdoor activities you could wish for. Walkers will be happy here as there’s plenty of places to explore and two pubs within walking distance; one on a cross-country route. The closest beach is Newport Sands (five miles away), great for swimming, surfing and watersports. It’s one of six beaches around Newport. You can also join the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path here for lovely coastal walking and Poppit Sands, another lovely beach a few miles up the coast, is the starting point for this national trail. Between the two is Ceibwr Bay where you can see otters, seals, dolphins and seabirds. Try a trip with Kayak King (07967 010203) from Fishguard or a wildlife-spotting sea safari with Bay to Remember (01239 623558). On land, there’s horse riding on offer at Crosswell Stables (01239 891262), six miles from site and the reconstructed Iron Age village, Castell Henllys (01239 891319) five miles away.

Food and drink

Don’t miss The Yacht Club Cafe, run by site owner Edward and his mum. The café overlooks the pretty little harbour in Lower Town Fishguard, 10 miles from Coedfryn Farm. Pop in to try a delicious lobster salad, crab sandwich or grilled mackerel. Closer to the campsite, there’s a 16th-century inn, The Trewern Arms in Nevern, a 10-minute walk along country roads, or The Salutation Inn (01239 820564), a similar distance across fields in the other direction. If you’re in Newport, your hosts recommend The Cat Rock Cafe (01239 820244) which sits within the golf course just off the beach which has uninterrupted views across Cardigan Bay and the Preseli Hills.
