Stone Hill

48 sites · RVs, Tents54 acres · Stuart Mill, VIC
Stone Hill is set in the quiet town Stuart Mill - a hamlet in northwestern Victoria, Australia. A historic gold mining area in the 1860’s, named after the British philosopher John Stuart Mill, it is located in the Shire of Northern Grampians and on the Sunraysia Highway, northwest of Melbourne. Now, it is mainly livestock properties and canola fields. The seasonal creek that runs through this 53-acre of rural escape, with Stuart Mill Bushland Reserve & Kara Kara National Park running alongside the property, make it an ideal place to experience the forests of Central Victoria with plenty of exploration options. Just over the border of the Pyrenees set under the Northern Grampians big skies, the undulating foothills and rugged ridges of Victoria’s west are perfect for touring and winemaking. You will discover wines as unique and inspired as the landscape that created them. Food & fuel supplies are easily accessible at Avoca or St Arnaud. Campfires are permitted in the provided firepits (within local regulations) and there is firewood available on site which is in addition to your camping fee. We don't have toilets on site, so you'll need to be self-contained. There is also a public toilet behind the community hall (about 250m from the property boundary). There are no showers. We offer two separate, large camping areas, both very private from one another. Please refer to each listing details as to which site will suit you best. Stone Hill is the perfect location to set up camp while you experience the native fauna and flora, hike, explore the region or just simply unplug and reconnect with nature. I am more than happy to provide more information or recommendations so please feel free to ask.

Dunolly Camperoos

1 site · RV, Tent20 acres · Dunolly, VIC
Please read all the info before you book... This is an ideal spot for a quiet getaway or as a home base if you want to explore the surrounding areas of Dunolly or Dunolly itself. Early mornings and late evenings you may be lucky to receive visits from Kangaroos. Camp freely around the designated campfire and enjoy an amazing star-gazing experience (on clear nights). The water hole is good for yabbies and great for skipping stones. We swim in it occasionally but prefer to go to the lake. We cannot endorse any swimming or entering the water hole as it is a liability issue and we cannot be responsible for anyone who chooses to swim or enter the area of the waterhole. Dunolly town has a great bakery, a pub, and a supermarket. Lake Laanacoorie 15 mins drive. Great for fishing, boats, and swimming. ***Pit-toilet (portable) available: - There is a pit toilet available for camper use but it's recommended to have a portaloo and use the onsite dunny as an emergency only. ***Keep Clean. -We ask that you take any rubbish with you when you leave. We would appreciate it if you could leave the property as you found it on arrival. ***Warning. -Regular pest control in the area might be a threat to your pet so please ensure that your pet does not stray too far off the property without your supervision. Pest control is usually concentrated in the state forest behind the property. ***Fire Wood: - You can BYO firewood or collect from the roadside. The state forest at the rear may be helpful but please don't cut down any trees. There is often a fallen tree that you can chop up if you have a chainsaw but it'll be easier to find on the roadside or BYO. If I'm able to provide firewood it'll be stacked but this is not something to depend on as it just depends on availability and time that I may not have. ***More info. -The campsite is close to the water hole which means it's also at the front of the property and approx 120m from the main road. You will see a vehicle passing by maybe once per hour in the daytime.

The best camping near Kara Kara National Park guide

Overview

About

Embark on an adventure through Kara Kara National Park, a treasure trove of Box-Ironbark vegetation and a sanctuary for native wildlife. Traverse the park's diverse trails on foot, mountain bike, or by four-wheel drive, and witness the vibrant birdlife that adorns the canopy. As dusk falls, settle in at one of the serene campgrounds, where the sounds of the bush become your lullaby.

Notable campgrounds

  • The Upper Teddington Reservoir offers a tranquil camping experience amid towering eucalypts and abundant birdlife.
  • Teddington Campgrounds provide a rustic escape, complete with facilities and the historic Teddington Hut nearby.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot at the popular Upper Teddington Reservoir, especially during peak seasons.
  • Visit mid-week for a better chance at snagging a campsite, as weekends tend to fill up quickly.
  • Keep an eye on the park's official website for updates on campsite availability and potential cancellations.
  • Explore nearby camping options if your preferred site is booked, as the surrounding area offers additional choices.

When to go

The best time to visit Kara Kara National Park is during spring, when wildflowers burst into colour and the weather is mild. Summer brings heat and requires caution due to fire danger, while autumn and winter offer cooler, yet equally enchanting, opportunities for exploration.

Know before you go

  • Check fire danger forecasts before your visit, as the park may close on days of Catastrophic Fire Danger.
  • Be prepared for no mobile reception in the campground areas, ensuring you have all necessary information beforehand.
  • Accessibility facilities are available, making the park's wonders open to all adventurers.
  • Remember to bring your own drinking water and firewood, as these are not provided at the campgrounds.
  • Respect the park's wildlife by keeping a safe distance and not feeding the animals.
