The best camping near Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site guide

Overview

About

Visit a windswept hill, overlooking the St. Lawrence River, where a red-roofed stone windmill was the scene of a bloody turning point in Canadian history. From the grounds of the Battle of the Windmill Historic Site, gaze at the waves and imagine the boats of an invading force of American ‘Hunters’ sailing across the river to do battle with British soldiers and local militia in the fight for Upper Canada.

When to go

The ideal time to visit the Battle of the Windmill National Historic Site is during its open season from July to August. The site welcomes visitors from Thursday to Monday, between 10am to 5pm. These summer months offer warm weather and full access to the site's offerings. Outside of these times, the harsh Canadian winter may limit accessibility and the overall experience.

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit, as the site is best enjoyed in good weather conditions.
  • Remember that the site is only open from July to August, so plan your visit accordingly.
  • Accessibility may vary across the site, so contact Parks Canada in advance if you have specific needs.
  • While there are no camping facilities, the site offers a rich historical experience with a museum and the opportunity for site rental.
