The best camping near Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites guide

Overview

About

A thriving Acadian settlement here became a pivotal site in the struggle between Great Britain and France for control of the Isthmus of Chignecto region. The village, under British rule since 1713, was burned by the French in 1750 to force the inhabitants into nearby French-controlled territory. The site's extensive archaeological resources, which include remarkable glass and ceramic artifacts and charred building remains, reflect both the Acadian way of life and the destruction of this village. Beaubassin remains a silent witness to the clash of two empires for power in North America.

When to go

The best time to visit Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites is during the spring, summer, and fall months. These seasons offer pleasant weather for exploring the historic grounds and engaging with the site's storied past. Winter visits are less ideal due to harsher conditions and limited access.

Know before you go

  • Check the opening hours before your visit, as the sites are open seasonally for self-guided tours.
  • Wear comfortable footwear suitable for walking over uneven terrain.
  • Bring along water and snacks, as there may be limited facilities available on-site.
  • Respect the archaeological integrity of the sites by not removing any artefacts.
  • For any inquiries, contact the site directly at 506-364-5080.
