I thought I was primitive camping and discovered one of the most freeing and welcoming places in the DMV area. My expectations were blown away. Thank you Teasa! We will be back.

Perfect Solo Retreat — in the nude
I took a solo trip to a CLOTHING OPTIONAL (mostly nude) campground in Davidsonville, Maryland called Maryland Health Society (MAHESO for short).
Use my $10 off code to book your trip on Hipcamp www.hipcamp.com/en-US/i/sonnathomas.
*not many pics for obvious reasons*
1. Camping at MAHESO :
- This is clearly NOT your average campground. This was my first time visiting a clothing optional campground and it was great! The campground is very secluded and offers several amenities. Their website/social media is not technologically advanced but they are all friendly and welcoming . It's best to call them if you have questions instead of emailing or messaging. I'd say that approx 95% of people there were fully nude. Most people were members. A small amount were camping and the others were just visiting for the day.
What I like about this site is that there's no pressure. It's a very relaxed environment compared to some of the other clubs that are very strict and pushy.
I rented a tent space that had electricity but they also offer tents spaces without electricity, small cabins, and RV sites.
Tips for camping at MAHESO:
- There's no Campstore. They do not sell beverages/ice/food etc. This is a club so they do have a clubhouse that houses a full kitchen.
- My campsite did not have a table or fire pit. I was walking distance to the clubhouse so I just used the clubhouse amenities when needed. Otherwise, I would recommend bringing a small folding table.
- Water spigots were widely available
- Bring at least 2 towels (1 for showers and 1 for sitting on chairs)
- There wasn't any unwanted looks, comments, or touching so you won't have to worry about that.
- Bring your own drinks if you'd like
- You will need to bring your ID to sign in. They take a picture of it when you get checked in.
- Keep your food in your car/fridge and throw all trash in the trash can by night! I had an encounter with a gangsta raccoon around 2 am because I made a mistake and left my trash bag out at night.
2. Nude swimming pool :
- Most people hangout at the pool. You must be fully nude to enter the pool but you don't have to be nude to sit around at the pool or hang at the clubhouse. In general, I'd say plan to be nude though there's no pressure. I met a lot of people at pool who will immediately start calling you by name throughout the trip and checking on you to make sure everything is ok. Apparently, I was known as the badass lady with the condo tent .
3. Outdoor showers :
- An outdoor shower...while the sun is shining during a slightly drizzle... as you listen to "Summer Rain" by Carl Thomas is PHENOMENAL. Absolutely would recommend .
- The campground has 2 indoor showers/restrooms in the clubhouse, 2 outdoor showers at the pool, and 3 outdoor showers/2 indoor restrooms further down. Although I didn't use them, the indoor showers/bathrooms could use some updating.
4. Other activities (Trails, volleyball, events) :
- They have a nice volleyball net, swinging bridge, hiking trails, and a community fire pit for bonfires. The members informed me that they have events that are open the public such as outdoor movie night, havana night, bull roast etc.
5. The people :
I met some really nice folks. Most were members but some were visitors like me. I'm a 33 year old Black woman so the club is really looking for some diversity though all are welcomed. Consider scheduling a day visit or booking a tent/cabin using my discount above. The people are super relaxed and non-judgmental. The environment is pretty chill though they know how to have a good time lol.

This was a great experience if you're looking to try something new, need a self care trip, need to even out your tan, looking to ease your way into naturism, or just plain ole don't feel like putting on clothes.
I would recommend MAHESO hiring a social media specialist to appeal to younger/more diverse visitors/members.
