Around the place where North Devon becomes North Cornwall, there are a lot of worthy places. There’s Woolfardisworthy, Bradworthy and Holsworthy, to name just a few. But, if you’re into back-to-nature camping, it’s this place, South Hoggs Hideaway, that we think is most worthy of the lot. It’s a five-acre campsite that’s shared by just seven pitches and a single bell tent. It’s dog-friendly, eco-friendly, campfire-friendly and just ten miles from seaside Bude.

This new-in-2022 site is part of a 27-acre plot owned by Devon couple Michaela and Mark. The five-acre field that’s given over to campers in the summer is neighboured by a similarly-sized wood with a lake that you’re welcome to wander. The rest is grazing land. It’s a quiet place that lives up to its name but 'hideaway' though it is, it’s not too far from anything your holiday heart might desire. There are shops and eateries in Holsworthy, about five minutes’ drive away. And, from there, you’ll find exploring on foot or by bike is easy on footpaths and marked cycle routes. The Cornish coast at Bude is ten miles due west and Devon’s Bideford is 18 miles north of here.

While it’s the location that most will head here for, there’s much to recommend the hideaway itself. Camping pitches are spacious and grassy in a field that slopes towards the trees of the neighbouring wood, behind which the sun goes down and in which deer can sometimes be spotted. Once the sun has set behind the trees and the temperature drops, it’s time to light the campfire. Those are welcome, with an off-ground fire pit at each pitch provided, along with a picnic bench or other outdoor seating.

The bell tent, which is let furnished with a log-burning stove, offers greater camping comfort but it’s all off grid and kept relatively simple. The site is part of the Greener Camping Club and you can expect everything that goes with that. There’s a commitment to recycling and eco-friendly practices with a choice of composting and flushing loos. Facilities, which include hot showers and washing-up sinks, have been hand-built with reclaimed materials wherever possible. All things considered, it’s a place that’s worthy of your attention.

Cosy private bell tent
It was great! Lovely hosts. Didn’t bring a lot of equipment but they had everything sorted, stayed in the bell tent and they’ve got everything you need for a lovely getaway. Very private and scenic with a lovely forest which is very different from most campsites. Definitely would recommend.

Tranquil camping and lovely host
We stayed for the first time and it was absolutely fabulous. We pre-booked firewood for £5 which included kindling and fire starters and got a lovely self made fire bin and some wooden table and night light with it! All my questions before our arrival were answered very promptly over the messenger service from Hipcamp. The host Michaela made us feel very welcome and the humanities where very well maintained and had little personal details to it! We will definitely consider another stay at this lovely campsite, when in the area again. The hidden lake gives you a quiet spot for exploration or an after dinner walk.

Secluded spacious camping pitches
Perfect for my mini solo retreat
South Hoggs Hideaway is an excellent site for a quiet trip away. The pitches are spaced well apart so plenty of privacy and all come with a fire pit and table. There is also a little lake walk which is ideal with the dog for a morning mooch. Michaela and Mark were very helpful and offered to assist me putting up my tent if needed as it was my first time doing it alone. The facilities are immaculate and well designed being eco to boot. And the location is spot on for trips to the Cornish coast, local nature reserves and Tamar lakes. It really was an ideal campsite for a mini retreat away from the real world. I shall definitely be coming back again. Thank you!

Quiet Private campervan pitches
Hoggs Hideaway is a gem. We stayed in this delightful setting in July and were treated so well by Michaela and her family. The facilities were excellent and scrupulously maintained. We arrived on the hottest two days ever recorded in UK but Michaela and Krystal so thoughtfully popped down with ice cubes and invited us to move pitch to park in shade. Hoggs Hideaway is so worth a visit - it’s near to some fun places to visit like Bude - but equally lovely to stay put and enjoy the tranquility. Go visit!

Cosy private bell tent
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Honestly, couldn't recommend it enough. The actual area is lovely and quiet with a great lake walk available through a small gate. The actual tent is amazing too. It fits 4 adults quite comfortably with lots of extra space. There is a oven/fire inside the tent that can be used. As well as an outdoor fire pit and bbq (with wood and charcoal also availble on site.) Not to mention that Michaela and Mark make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable. Kettle, pots and pans, cutlery, plates, mugs, glasses, cooler, gas stove. They really thought of everything. On the subject of Michaela and Mark they are some of the nicest people you'll meet. ANY issue we had (not that there was many at all) was immediately resolved as soon as we asked them. Their number one concern is your comfort and happiness and you can really feel that. So if you have any questions just ask them and they will do anything they can to help. Overall, a great place to camp. The scenery is beautiful and quiet. There are other camp spots near the bell tent so you aren't completely alone but we were barely able to hear or notice anyone else so it really wasn't a problem. Every facility you could wish for but still with the authentic feeling of being outside and camping. Definitely recommend it.

From the host
We moved here in 2021 to start a camping site. It has been our dream for a long time to give people a great experience and enjoy the wonderful part of the UK that we live in. Come and make some memories. We have 27 acres, the campsite is approx 5 acres with well spaced pitches. and includes access to the wooded area and lake also. We have 2 fields that we have separated for children and dogs to play. There is a stunning lake where you can watch ducks, birds and geese. The wooded area is brimming with wildlife and wild flowers, deer are often running by in the woods. This area is a like a world away, an idyllic escape.
Nearby attractions

The town of Holsworthy is under two miles away (five minutes in the car or a 30-minute walk). There's a small museum (weekdays only), lots of shops, a leisure centre and a Wednesday market. It's also on a number of cycle routes. Further afield, you'll find wildlife-rich walks at Dunsdon Nature Reserve and water's edge ones at Tamar Lakes (both within five miles of site) and there's Dragon's Archery (07500 112834) six miles away and horse riding at Garlands Farm (01409 231569), seven miles from site. There are lovely gardens at RHS Rosemoor (020 3176 5800), 16 miles from site. The North Cornish Coast at Bude is just 10 miles away for surfing and swimming with plenty of shops, eateries and Bude seapool and Bude Castle Heritage Centre (01288 357300). On the Devon coastline, Bideford is 18 miles away with family attractions The Big Sheep Farm and Theme Park (01237 472366) and The Milky Way Adventure Park (01237 431 255) nearby. The Eden Project is about an hour's drive.

Food and drink

Hoof to Block at Thorne Farm (07488 340258) is a good local butchers about three miles from South Hoggs Hideaway which can supply BBQ boxes. In Holsworthy, The Rydon Inn (01409 259444) is recommended for food. Over in Bude, book in advance if you would like to try the excellent roast dinners at The Preston Gate Inn (01288 354017) or, perhaps try The Deck (01288 353846) for great food or Bar Thirtyfive (01288 353535) for drinks.
