Small, rustic, dog-friendly country camping and caravanning in East Sussex

Peel House Farm and Garden is a good old-fashioned, family-run camping and caravan site in rural East Sussex. Situated just outside the South Downs National Park, it’s a 10-minute drive from the closest beach and edged by The Cuckoo Trail, which provides a traffic-free route to the nearest towns. Those are Hailsham and Polegate, if you want to know. The site is well positioned for walking, cycling, and trips to the seaside at Pevensey Bay. It offers country camping that seemingly hasn’t changed for 30 years. And host Julie Ann should know. That’s how long it’s been since she bought the place after spending her own holidays here and falling in love with the place!

Peel House Farm and Garden still has plenty of charm but there’s no razzle-dazzle to speak of. It's a simple site with no club house, no pizza oven, and certainly no glamping. Unless, of course, you count the handful of static caravans that are available to hire. They make staying here incredibly easy but are not dressed up to be cute, charming or cool—although, you might argue, that in their authenticity, they edge towards being all three. Perhaps what’s more important, is that they are clean, comfy and well furnished; taken care of by capable hands. It's the same story across the rest of this pretty and well-kept site.

There are 20 grassy electric hook-up pitches and there’s meadow camping beyond. This two-acre field is our favourite part of the site. It’s the latest addition; offering camping to anyone who’s happy to go electricity free. You can pitch where you like, parking alongside—as long as it’s not too muddy. It’s a flat, hedgerowed field with neighbouring countryside and only a stile separating you from The Cuckoo Trail. All pitches share the same facilities, which include no nonsense flushing loos, hot water showers, and indoor washing-up sinks, as well as a little shop. It’s a welcoming site which shows its maturity in the relaxed smiles of its host and the smooth operation she oversees. Plus it’s in a winning location: in Sussex countryside that’s not far from the sea and just a cycle away from the South Downs.

Grass Pitch Meadow Camping (no EHU)
Lovely small campsite. Hosts were very welcoming and checked on us to make sure that we didn't need anything. Facilities were good and clean. We had a lovely overnight stay here and would thoroughly recommend it!

This is a lovely little campsite. Great views from the field, easy access to cuckoo trail, friendly and helpful warden. The toilets were cleaner than our house! We had a great stay.

Just What I Was Looking For
I stayed with my car camper and awning in the beautiful meadow. This is clearly a cherished site. The meadow is huge and even on a bank holiday weekend those of us in there had plenty of room. Other guests ranged from tourists from Europe to long-time regulars. The setting was exactly what I was looking for. Quiet and unfussy with great access (by bicycle in my case) via the Cuckoo Trail to Hailsham and Eastbourne. Sure, the loos and shower weren’t the most modern, but they were scrupulously clean. I liked the security gate, which made me feel happier about leaving my little rig behind. Wonderfully welcoming owners who couldn’t have been more welcoming. This camp was exactly what I was looking for. PS. Try the ice-cream!

Good site
Great site, good amenities and easy access to great walks. My 3 month old booking with hipcamp had not been received by the host, rather than trying to sort problem out I was told ' take it up with hipcamp' host was defensive abd made me feel like I had done something wrong. Site is good so have to assume just went on bad day!

Good cycling base
Beautiful area, great access to cuckoo trail, could definitely do it on foot across the field in better weather, we had to do via road. Direct (near) traffic free links to lewes/Eastbourne/downs/hailsham. Facilities on site are good if a little dated, warm showers and clean. Owner was lovely and friendly welcoming us to site. Spring 22 has been exceptionally wet and the site had some standing surface water as a result - wellies only! We were warned on arrival and guided to the best area they had, however definitely one to check if you are going at a similar time of year.

From the host
Located in a small corner of Sussex between Polegate and Hailsham. We back onto the Cuckoo Trail which offers pedestrian walks and cycling, along the South Downs National Park. The beach is a 10 minute journey and the local area is filled with great restaurants, pubs and tea rooms. Not forgetting the many local attractions - manmade and historic.
Nearby attractions

Peel House Farm and Garden is midway between Hailsham and Polegate in the East Sussex countryside, about two miles from each. You can drive to either town in about five minutes – or use the Cuckoo Trail, a traffic-free cycleway on the route of a former railway line, to walk or cycle. The site is just outside the eastern edge of the South Downs National Park where there’s excellent walking, cycling and horseriding on the South Downs Way. The Seven Sisters Country Park is a popular place for a walk on top of the chalky cliffs that mark the end of the South Downs and is 10 miles from site. Seaside Eastbourne with its beach, pier, prom and crazy golf is eight miles from site. A quieter spot to head to the beach, and usually quicker to get to, is the huge shingle beach at Pevensey Bay which is great for a swim. In fact, head there at 9am and you can take a dip with friendly bunch, The Pevensey Plungers, who advocate cold-water swimming. You might even see host Julie Ann there! For families there’s Knockhatch Adventure Park, less than three miles away, and Drusillas Zoo Park six miles away. There are plenty of lovely historic villages and sites to visit in this part of Sussex including Mitchelham Priory (about six miles), and bigger more bustling towns too – including Lewes (14 miles) and Brighton (21 miles).

Food and drink

You can buy all the basics in the small on-site honesty shop at Peel House Farm and Garden campsite – don’t miss the Caroline’s Dairy ice creams. For more than, that it’s only a few minute’s drive into either Hailsham or Polegate where there’s a choice of shops and supermarkets. For something to eat out, the closest option is The Holly Blue, a two-mile drive away, where there’s a classic pub menu and a Sunday carvery. The Cottage Restaurant, also two miles, is another good one to try, especially on a summer evening when the outside courtyard is lit with twinkly lights. On occasion, Julie Ann and her team provide on-site catering from their own van. Any plans to do this will be advertised on site.
