Wildlife-friendly camping and glamping with private loos at each pitch, 15 minutes' drive from the coast

Coppet Hill Farm has been tended by Ellen’s family for 70 years and counting, established first by her grandfather back in the 1950s, the love of the land was born into each generation of the Streatfield family. Run in partnership with her parents, George and Amanda, the farm, once a dairy enterprise, has recently turned a new leaf, working with local organisations like the Dorset Wildlife Trust to prioritise the environment and biodiversity. The result is a sustainably farmed and responsibly managed campsite that's a relaxing retreat for campers and glampers and a permanent home to an ever-growing amount of wildlife.

For campers who like a little peace and quiet, the outcome of it all is heavenly. To ensure ample room for wildlife and habitats, the layout of the 10-acre camping meadow is wild and largely untouched. Pitches are spread out, with over 50 metres between each, and mown pathways lead into a small, central mown area where kids can play games. Facilities, meanwhile, include electric showers and drinking water taps, while each pitch has its own private composting loo nearby, as well as a firepit for that all-important campfire.

If you want a little luxury, Ellen has introduced a couple of glamping options, too, set in separate quiet meadows on the farm. There's a Lotus Belle Tent with a king-sized bed inside, a hot tub and its own kitchen and washing facilities, while a couple of 'Land Pods' – structures half way between a tent and a timber cabin – also have their own meadow space, with private ablutions and kitchen facilities.

While the quirky glamping options add intrigue and the wildlife-friendly camping has obvious appeal, it's really the location that makes the campsite stand out. Tucked in a fold down a narrow country road, views are of the hill that gives the farm its name, reached by following a bridleway that cuts through the land and runs up to the hilltop, a part of the long-distance Monarch's Way. Follow it another five miles and you'd ultimately end up in Bridport or change tack on the other side of the hill and you could potentially walk to Seatown or Charmouth Beach, though that, too, would take at least an hour and a half on foot. Hop in the car, though, and it's 15 minutes to either beach and 20 minutes to West Bay and Lyme Regis, where fossil hunting and ice-creams await.

This is a lovely campsite with well spaced pitches and excellent facilities. The on-pitch composting toilets were amazing and cleaned every day, whilst having a tap on the pitch was also very useful. But the main thing is the space between the pitches which is fantastic. We would happily return again and would recommend.

First time at Coppet Camping
Wonderful spacious camping pitches in beautiful surroundings. The barn is great for wet weather and the dairy has huge shower rooms. Having our own toilet in our pitch was fantastic. We hope to return again!

Little Coppet Landpod
A fabulous place to stay!
We loved the Little Coppet landpod and it was great that it had been extended recently as it provided additional covered space when the weather wasn't great, which was really needed. The location, views and neighbours (Exmoor ponies!) were fabulous with the walk up the hill to it guaranteed to keep you fit! Having access to the barn with indoor activities was great on wetter days and a focal point for our kids who really enjoyed the moth and nature clubs that were run from it. It was also a great location for accessing the Jurassic coast. If you love nature and getting away from it all this is a great place to stay whatever the weather!

Beautiful views
Lovely campsite with very well spaced pitches. The facilities are superb and the barn is a lovely space - particularly when the weather isn’t so good. Small shop with some great provisions. The views from the site are spectacular and the hosts very welcoming and helpful.

Light the fire in my bonfire ❤️
This is such a beautiful spot in the Dorset countryside. The pitches were so spread out and very well catered for with composting loos and tidy pitches - although still feels like you’re authentically camping! We stayed in ‘Robin’ which we loved as it was secluded and sheltered. We especially enjoyed all the wildlife and walks around the campsite. It was brilliant for our 2 boys (11 and 9) who had the freedom to roam and play in the Barn where there was table football, table tennis, pool etc and a great little honesty bar for us to enjoy some hot coffee and cake! Perfect. Couldn’t fault it and will definitely be returning.

12 Acres Camping Pitch
Fantastic campsite
A beautiful, peaceful, nature-filled campsite. Ellen and her family are friendly and happy to help, while giving you (lots of) space to relax and enjoy. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and a short drive to great beaches on the Jurassic Coast, campsites don’t get much better.

From the host
Just two miles from the Jurassic Coast, our 600-acre family farm is a peaceful haven for walking, wildlife and watching the world go by. We offer our visitors the opportunity to stay in individual secluded corners of the farm, all off grid, but with the luxury of individual compost loos, picnic benches and firepits. The quiet camping field, Landpods and Lotus Belle tent are all in different corners of the farm, do have a look at our map to find out more. Now with electric car charging points!
Nearby attractions

The site is situated in a Dorset area of natural beauty, with almost eight miles of nature trails, footpaths and bridleways on the farm, offering a fantastic chance to explore the hills and enjoy the sea views. A short climb up the neighbouring hill will give you amazing views of Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast, from Portland Bill in the east to Lyme Regis in the west. If a view of Lyme Regis isn’t enough for you, it’s only a 20-minute trip to the beach and seaside town itself. To explore the history of the town or arrange a fossil walk, you can take a trip to Lyme Regis Museum, but between the 13th-century harbour, known as the Cobb, and the rest of the historic town setting, there are plenty of things to keep you busy.

Food and drink

Drive the ten minutes to Symondsbury Kitchen (01308 424116) for breakfasts, light lunches, hot drinks and sweet treats, best enjoyed out on their terrace, dotted with plants and budding trees with umbrellas to shade you from the sun. The Shave Cross (01308 868358) pub is a 20-minute walk from the site. Set in a 14th-century thatched-roof inn, the pub serves a selection of local specialty beers, fresh, organic and award-winning artisan ciders and any cocktail you’re in the mood for if you just ask for Tom. Around 10 minutes' drive is The George Inn (01297 489419), a friendly local with a good outdoor seating area as well as a smaller 'snug' area indoors.
