The best camping near Dunvegan Provincial Park guide

Overview

About

Dunvegan Provincial Park sits 26 kilometres south from the town of Fairview, with a public boat launch to paddle along the Peace River, go fishing, or walk along the riverside trail. Camping is available at the park’s sole Dunvegan Campground, which has powered sites, tap water, pit toilets, a playground, a horseshoe pitch, and an amphitheatre. The widely spaced sites are mainly within forested areas. The Historic Dunvegan site is also in the park, made up of historic buildings, learning opportunities, and Alberta’s only suspension bridge.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. The sites at Dunvegan Campground are all reservable. You can book up to 90 days in advance on the Alberta Parks website or by phone.
  2. Self-registration is permitted with cash or a personal cheque made out to “Government of Alberta.” Credit card payments aren’t accepted.
  3. With such a short season, weekends (especially long ones) tend to be most in demand, so an advance reservation is a good idea.

When to go

The Dunvegan Campground is open seasonally from the Victoria Day long weekend until Labour Day, while the Historic Dunvegan site is open year-round. Northern Alberta can have temperamental weather, so make sure to bring supplies for chilly temperatures, especially if planning a spring trip.

Know before you go

  • There are three accessible campsites, and all bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.
  • You don’t need a permit to enter Alberta Provincial Parks. Fees for overnight camping and reservations apply.
  • Dunvegan Provincial Park is located in bear country. Make sure you are “bear aware” and keep your food in your car. Never leave food in your tent or out in your campsite.
